Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Houston Texans are hoping to attract a third-round draft pick in return for QB David Carr.

I think it's probably more wishful thinking. If I were a GM of a team I wouldn't give up anything more than a 4th rounder. If we can get a 3rd rounder for Carr, that would be a steal.

Why? We got a 3rd rounder for freaking Drew Henson. Why can't we get at least that for David Carr?

I think we can easily get a 3rd, possibly late 2nd for him this offseason for multiple reasons. 1) We don't have to get rid of Carr if we don't want to so we hold the upper hand. 2) Name a FA QB currently on the market that has more to offer than Carr. 3) Quite afew teams need help at QB and giving up a 3rd for someone who still has great potential and has been in the league is a better option than taking a rookie.

if all the hundreds of quotes from "league sources" saying that "Carr is a great young QB who hasnt been in the right situation" are correct, then a 3rd rounder should be easy.

Unless that was just a bunch of people blowing smoke up our %!&.

I think this is a case of asking for more than they want. It is a classic sales tactic. If they expect or are hoping to get a 4th, you ask for a 3rd. If you get it, then great, you got a good deal, if you don't, you "concede" and ask for a 4th.

2) exactly what does Carr have to offer and I don't think the other teams are looking for excuses or 'forcast' of what he could do if everything were perfect around him...what has he done in his 5 yrs in the NFL?

Besides taking a beating and continually get up and get behind center and run another play? If nothing else he has proven he is durable.

Because Joey Harrington only attracted a conditional 5th round pick with a restructured contract.

A 3rd rounder is about the best the Texans can expect, and it's the best I've been expecting. I think it's most likely going to be a 5th rounder.

If we know Dan Reeves said he's 'unfixable' and dump him don't we think the rest of the NFL knows this as well.

I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. LAST year was the year to dump him. We'll be lucky to cut our losses and get out.

in negotiations you need posture and leverage because even if you win you are going to concede something most of the time anyway. At the end of the day you give them what you didn't expect anyway but ask for the maximum someone may be willing to pay. Why impose an artificial ceiling on what another team may offer you? Al Davis knows that game, just ask Charley. A classic example is the guy who doesn't want the kids in a divorce. He thinks the ex is honestly the better environment for his kids but asks for them anyway. He knows the soon to be ex will fight it, but he knows this and tries to make this the only tough concession. It's just a game of leverage and posture...and allowing for random stupidity always spices up the event like the little umbrella on your cocktail when vacationing on some white sanded beach. Some people get lost in the details and as Keith says - there are plenty of Norman Einsteins in the NFL...so yeah, ask for a 2.

One other thing. All 2nd round picks are not the same. If you throw out the round and go to the actual pick slot, the Colts second rounder is just about the same worth as the Lions 3rd rounder. The draft slot has a lot to do with what pick is traded in a given deal. A 4th rounder from the Bears is pretty much a 5th round pick since just about the entire league already made their 4th rounder.

I can't recall reading or hearing Reeves said this. Do we know he said this?

I have no idea what the Texans can/can't get for Carr. But, I would like the Texans to pickup an extra 3rd round pick in this draft. There should be some solid prospects at CB, FS, and WR up and down the 3rd.
