Default Lions' Bly wants to be traded

Bly is a pure cover corner. He prefers lining up man-to-man. But after the Lions hired Marinelli last year, they installed the Tampa Two defense. Bly is now asked to play zone and stuff the run. He also has a high salary-cap figure for next season ó more than $5 million.

It appears the Lions will try to get something in return for Bly so they donít have to release him for nothing.

We could just send them a wide receiver for Bly. They don't have enough receivers....

The comments posted to that story aren't very kind to Bly. The big question is would the Texans be picking up another Flanagan/P-buc, somebody with a resume who sounds good but stinks. Or would they be picking up another TO-type. From what I'm reading online, it sounds like a bit of both. I would be very cautious before biting on this one if I was Rick Smith.

Lion's Bly Has Broken Unwritten Rule:
Quote:
At his team’s lowest hour — the firing of its coach — Bly decided what the world needed was for him to mouth off, so he went on TV and talked to the Detroit Free Press and shot an arrow at the quarterback, Joey Harrington.

He blamed Harrington for Steve Mariucci’s dismissal Monday. He did the very thing that football players since the birth of the game have said you never do.

He turned on a teammate.
USA Today Lions Summary:

Quote:
After going to the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons with the Lions, Bly's star appears to have flamed out. He had only three interceptions, was beaten more often than ever before and was not strong or aggressive in run support.

yeah they'll go for that, & will have had 2001's 1st 2 Qb's darfted. if that wouldn't get Matt Millen fired, i don't know what would. On the other hand, the city of Detroit would thank us for getting him the pink slip finally if it actually did happen.

Default Bly given permission to seek trade

Dre Bly has been allowed to seek a trade by the Detroit Lions. He is 29. If he could be had for a second round pick, I think it would definately be worth an attempt.

No way Bly is worth a second pick. He wasnt worth a second when he left via FA to Detroit. Plus he's 29. He was cool once...long time ago in NFL land. Long, Long, Long time ago.

IT might put him in the Hall of Fame......

Harrington is going to end up being a success story, proving that Milen knows how to spot Talent.

David will take the lions to the SuperBowl with Mike Martz' greatest show on turf offense.

hey...... it could happen.

The 3 picks he had are a career low (that would also happen to be a high on our team last season), but he was asked to play a role he wasnt comfortable in. Bly and Dunta would be a pretty good solution to our secondary woes, provided we can get a FS at some point (FA or draft). We might be able to get a Moulds like deal for a veteran tired of losing with his current team and looking for a new team. 29 years old is not a long term solution, but it isnt a 1 or 2 year stop gap either. Start with a 5th or 4th round pick and work something out.

well this doesn't seem right at all.

30 DET -16.0% 7 41.7% 32 43.1% 31 16.9% 29 4.0% 21

from football outsiders
that first stat is the for the #1 WR and I suspect Bly played there.

meaning the other 4 positions played so bad that Bly was avoided ( I guess )

Plus don't we still have Holland from Detroit?? Smith too... they should know him better then most on this deal.

EDIT:
also the team only had 12 INTs so Bly made for 25% of their total. That's not bad.

I think Bly's asking price will be too high. And I'd rather not give up draft picks. We need all the picks we need. I'd rather find a young corner or safety in the 2nd or 3rd round who we can develop and turn into a really good player rather than someone who prime has already passed him by.

The Lions played a Tampa 2 defense, meaning Bly would be responsible for a side of the field, not a WR.

That's true, but usually the #1 WR is somebody lining up wide and I would think that's were Bly was assigned. It's not like the defense is not going to flip if the #1 WR does. ( caveat: I didn't watch many Lions games though )

His PD was 14 and FF was 4. That's not shabby.

and that's just until DEC 11 from the Lion's website ( so he might have picked some more in the final games ).

EDIT:
18 PD from ESPN
Vasher 8 PD 0 FF 3 INTs
Bailey 21 PD 0 FF 10 INTs

Depends on the offense they were playing. Some teams like the Colts ussualy have their receivers on the same side. Other teams, like ours, move them around. AJ lines up everywhere for us: left, right, slot, etc.
If teams can choose who their number 1 receiver is going against, it isnt going to be the other teams best corner. (Teams never throw at Drob because they can get their number 1 receiver on Faggins- see Bills game)

yeah I agree. The outsiders stat is subjective where they assign the #1 WR, but I don't agree with USA Today. The seasonal stats for Bly are still pretty good and conincide with him being the only good thing going on their defense in the passing game.

It's not like they had a bunch of other guys stepping up. If there was somebody else was doing something to shut down the #1 WR that much, it should be showing up in their stats somewhere.

So long as he passes a physical and his injury history is clean, I would be damn happy to see him dressing as a Texan.

When you have a Pro-Bowl calibur WR and a QB who throws for over 4000 yards, but still have the second worst record in the NFL, your defense might be a little low in terms of talent. We are a young and improving defense and we could use a proven Pro Bowler, especially in the secondary. A 3rd or 4th round pick would be great, I might be willing to go for a 2nd. Looks like there are plenty of targets for the Texans already.
