Default Draft History.......

We're always talking about how bad/good our drafts have been. on another recent thread, someone said we should look at the number of 2nd & 3rd round picks on our roster..... suggesting that we had less than other teams....... & the more successful teams had more.

So I spent the most of my morning digging through old drafts, to see how we compare (in numbers) to other teams. What I've found, is that argument doesn't hold water.

& I figured I'll share the info I culled with you.

I agree with ya. But I will say the draft isn't an exact science either. I'm looking forward to a Smith/Kubiak draft. After this BS CC has been feeding us this whole time I welcome the change. I can now look forward to draft day once again. With renewed hope......................

As a fan, I am terribly, teribbly EXCITED about this year's draft. No more Casserly, as one variable. Look, I know a lot of the fanbase has blamed the past sins on Charlie, but I wonder how much of the decision to pass Reggie and VY last year was related to Mr. McNair.

And I know the fanbase has a long proud history of casting blame on ownership (e.g., Bud Adams). Rightly so, in the case of Bud. He wore out his Houston welcome the moment he uttered, "Bum, you're fired."

Anyway, I digress. I'm looking forward to a Kubiak/Smith draft. In a BIG way.

For me that's the only variable I needed! CC was too much of a gambler (as far as draft picks went) IMO.

Good work looking up some other teams. But what I think you'll find more significant is the number of picks we've had and the % still on our team, compared to others. THAT is where I think you'll see that 2002 - 2005 was pretty pathetic. I mean.......the picks given up for P-BUCH, the picks given up for trading up to get BABIN, the MILFORD BROWN & HOLLINGS supplemental picks.

Seriously...just look at our 2nd & 3rd round choices.

2 33 Jabar Gaffney WR Florida
2 50 Chester Pitts G San Diego State
3 66 Fred Weary G Tennessee

3 83 Charles Hill NT Maryland
2 41 Bennie Joppru TE Michigan
3 67 Antwan Peek OLB Cincinnati
3 75 Seth Wand T N.W. Missouri
3 88 Dave Ragone QB Louisville
3 73 Vernand Morency RB Oklahoma State
HOLLINGS
MILFORD BROWN

It's a like a junkyard of failed draft picks except for 3 players.

Now....if our CURRENT front office can repeat last year's quality drafts, then I think we'll be just fine.

I didn't count, but I think the Pats had more picks in that time than we did. They retained less, probably because the talent they had at whatever position was better than what they got in the draft.
Denver also traded away several first day picks, like Quentin Griffin, Clinton Portis, and Ashlie Lelee....... so the list is really kind of misleading. But those are just what they are, no explanation or anything, just numbers.

I think a couple of years ago we decided that if you hit 40% of your picks you're doing well .

If you draft 7 you get 2.8 on average .

I agree with Sco-Tai about having more picks also I think CC really took a lot of chances I guess it was boom or bust .

Great work, that must have taken a lot of time.

It's very difficult for us to compare the Texans to any other team in the league. I can see the argument your making but you have to realize those teams have been in the league a lot longer than we have.

Patriots for example..they already had their team well established. Therefore not all of the guys the draft will become instant starters like us. even some of their later rounds. Even the guys we got our first year of existence ...most were not good enough to start on other teams. We might still have a lot of the guys we drafted on our team..but that doesn't mean they are better than the other's back ups. we are just forced to keep them..any other team would have cut them by now.

We're still young.

That's what I'm saying...... numbers wise, we're right there with the best teams...... but the numbers don't tell the whole story.

In another thread, someone had said, "our drafts sucked, look at the numbers of 2s & 3s on our roster....."

Well, just like you, I'm saying that argument doesn't mean a whole lot.

Our drafts may very well have sucked...... but the number of 2s & 3s on our roster isn't a good gauge to judge our past drafts by.

You can't discount the poor coaching and/or schemes these players were forced to endure. Gaffney is doing pretty OK in NE and Wand is still with the tacks. Not sure about the others. IMO, we've been severely outcoached the last 5 yrs., Kubes included. He was a rookie HC last year, so I cut him some slack, though. You have to match schemes to players, then put the players in the best position to succeed. THAT hasn't happened. Couple that with the questionable drafting of CC and you get our current mess.
