I would say yes as well. However, after seeing how we passed on the hometown boy Vince Young last year, I would be willing to bet that Cleveland doesn't make the same mistake with their hometown boy Troy Smith. I'm expecting Cleveland to pick Troy a few picks ahead of us in the 3rd round.

I'm sick and tired of all the "non-winners" on here that STILL think David Carr can lead us to the playoffs, and eventually to the Super Bowl. I think it's time we stop looking to how the Oilers may have done things in the past. Let's go out and get Kevin Kolb in the 3rd round, since Smith will probably be off the board, most likely to the Cleveland Browns. What's up with everybody coming here (player or coach) having a prior Denver Bronco or Houston Oiler connection?! That's getting kind of old too. Go get the best guy, no matter where he's from.

I just don't think he is a good fit for us. Neither is Kolb. From what I have heard John Beck, from BYU, would be a better fit. They say he has good arm strengh good foot work and is good at reading defenses, but I'm not a scout so what do I know.

wow john beck.............averaged a league best 323.8 yards passing per game.........wow thats impressive......but i found this......Dave Thompson's Scouting Report:
John Beck looks to be a top 10 QB, perhaps going as early as the third round, but more realistically probably fourth or even fifth round. His age (at 25) is a concern, as well as being a product of the BYU system that typically plays weaker teams. His arm strength is average, but his strengths include his accuracy and great decision-making ability, thus avoiding turnovers. He also has a pretty quick release and a good presence in the pocket. His height is average for a QB, and is shorter than the premier QBs in this year's draft (Quinn is 6'4 and Russell is 6'6). 25??????kinda old....but could be ok with kubiack as his coach....i say get him if there in the 5th......... |

Don't worry, that doesn't stop others on this board from speaking in certainty.

Even though Kitna had a pretty good year, no way in my mind does Detroit pass on Brady Quinn...no way!

while not as enthusiastic as andre, i think troy smith is a great value in the third round and shouldnt be passed if he fell that far. van pelt isnt a starting option, and carr's welcome has worn out (whether he stays or not), so quarterback is a position of need.
i only endorse this pick if we draft an offensive lineman in the first or second round however. we NEED to pick up a first day O-lineman.

I say no. The opp cost is still too high.
Probable round 1/2 Texan scenarios (absent any moves): RB/OT RB/FS OT/FS OT/CB Under those scenarios, I do wonder if we can "afford" to draft a QB in the 3rd. |

I said no but it depends on who else is available. If Smith is the PBA then yes I think we should, BUT if there are CB, S, O-Line, D-Line, or LB prospects that rate as high then I say no, I think we need to address those problems first, if not then sure lets pull the trigger! It also depends on what we do in the first 2 rounds, imo.

i agree if he is the bpa......i am hoping for our 1st 3 rounds to go as followed........levi brown at 8......i think that with our current situation this wont be a reach b/c it is a player in which we desperately need therefore why wait until the later rounds where the opposition gets worse?????? then with the 2nd round pick i think chris houston, brandon merriweather, eric weddle, or if lucky daymeion hughes......then in the 3rd if we get lucky yet again troy smith......hey maybe when
or maybe in 07 right?

On the one hand he's the Heisman and has a rocket arm... on the other hand, he has a major weakness that has been exploited. He's good when he gets out of the pocket, bad when penned in. He should be worth a 3rd rd. pick based on talent alone... but probablyy not a #2 like I thought, and I could understand why some teams would consider him unworthy of a 1st day pick.
I think this is one of the few offenses where he could thrive, based on the primacy of the run game, moving the pocket/bootlegs, and value of the PA deep ball. But ultimately he'll fail in big moments if he can't find a way to handle a speed rush, step into the pocket and throw over the line. |
