Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports the Buffalo Bills will unlikely be able to re-sign CB Nate Clements, who is expected to receive a lucrative offer as a free agent in the offseason.

Nick Eatman, of DallasCowboys.com, reports Dallas Cowboys PK Martin Gramatica is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The club is expected to attempt to re-sign him.


I know Gramatica is a bit of a stretch but hey who knows.

You can pretty much bet there's going to be a bidding war on Clements. At 10 to 13.5 million in cap space, you go after him won't be no "others" in FA. Be him and no one else. That'll shave off five million there. All Day that's another 5 to eight million...see where I'm going with this ? Three million to sign the rest with no emergency war chest. If we're at the high end in cap space.

Not sure what a deal to lock up Clements or Samuel would ultimately look like in terms of $, but there is no way that if Peterson is drafted in the 8 hole that he would get a deal that would count 5 to 8 MM against the '07 cap. All of these deals have to be structured to fit in the rookie pool. That is not to say that there aren't effects on forward years via guaranteed roster bonuses etc.

Also check out the HPF 2006 salary cap page (http://www.houstonprofootball.com/cap.html) and take a look at what Mario's estimated cap hit was for this season as the number 1 overall (Keith has it just under 3MM.)

Plus, it looks to me like there is an opportunity to restructure or release DDW and Payne to create more room in 2007 (but maybe less in 08)

Last year the Texans quietly let go of players. This offseason will be different. I suspect TJ, Peek, Hodgdon, and Dominic Williams will be gone before the next season starts. Just a feeling, but releasing these guys should open up some new money.

His agent will give up Bushette like-money because he wont be drafted 1 or 2 and if he were to be drafted by us at 8 then he would really have no reason to say he deserves that kind of money.

So you are saying that the number 8 overall pick this year is going to get a deal that is 2 to 2.5 greater cap wise than than last years number 1 overall?

I am talking about actual cap implications for '07 not braga-dollars.

True, we are closer on cap room than I would like, but I look for the team to release some players and re-negotiate some contracts to get more room. I suspect that when all is said and done, they will add about 4-6 mill to the cap room. We need the one high end CB and if we can swing it maybe one more upper level player and then hope for the best in the draft.

If his agent can convince the Texans to pay Peterson #1 or #2 money when he was drafted at #8 then he would win the Agent of the Millennium award.

I expect that by March 5th we will have a much better idea of what we will be doing in the draft. Most of the highend deals seem to pop pretty quick after FA starts.
