The YFT Breakdown: Quarterbacks

Here it is, my breakdown of all the upcoming quarterbacks in this years draft. Could have been a strong class had Brian Brohm commited to the draft, but he decided another year in college will help him out. I will rate the top 5 quarterbacks and an analysis on why they are there, positives, and negatives.

1. Brady Quinn Notre Dame
Quinn has played many games and is a young senior (wasn't redshirted). No one has experience like Quinn has had, and no one has been through thick and thin like quinn has been through. While Brady Quinn played two full seasons, Troy Smith was on the bench. Many say Russel should be ahead of quinn, I strongly disagree. Russel dominated a bad secondary in the bowl game with two good receivers and the top defense in the country, Quinn had success as well against one of the best defenses in the country and not as much help.

Positives: Good arm strength, can move around a bit, good pocket prescence. Very tough, never messed a game in his 4 years at notre dame. Was coached last two years by one of the greats, never really disappeared in games. Has played in plenty of big games, knows how to handle pressure.

Negatives: Never won a big game. Has relied on a lot of good talented receivers around him, was very inconsistent first 2 years at notre dame.

2. JaMarcus Russel LSU
Went out with a bang by beating notre dame in the sugar bowl. Started most of sophomore year and all of junior year. Threw 28 touchdowns and 8 interceptions his junior year.

Positives: Great size and speed. A lot like Daunte Culpepper. Played in the toughest division in college and has been put in a lot of pressure situations.

Negatives: Not much starting experience, or at least not as much as quinn. Has had a lot of talent around him. Lacks awareness. Has been labeled as being lazy by a lot of scouts.

3. Chris Leak Florida
Went out by dominating #1 Ohio State and winning the national championship. Threw 23 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Putting him ahead of Troy Smith because he has a lot more experience, and I think has the best mechanics out of any quarterback in the draft.

Positives: I was able to go to a camp with Chris Leak, and watching him throw was truely amazing. This kid throws a tight spiral and is extremely accurate. I think if Tim Tebow hadn't split time with him, he would have won heisman. Shows up in big games and is very coachable.

Negatives: Isn't very mobile, and lacks awareness. Inconsistency hurts him.

4. Drew Stanton Michigan State
Most underrated player in the draft. This year's Jay Cutler, I feel his stock will rise a whole lot until the draft. Most complete Quarterback in the draft in my opinion.

Positives: Is a playmaker, and can take over a game. Has lacked a lot of talent around him, so he relies on his own athleticsm to make all the throws and all the plays. Beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame in overtime a year ago is the highlight of his career.

Negative: A little injury prone, didn't show up in a lot of big games, and threw 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions this past year.

5. Troy Smith Ohio State
Most overrated player in college, didn't deserve the heisman in my opinion. Kind of like a poor man's donavan mcnabb. National Championship game lost him a lot of money, and made his stock drop dramatically.

Positives: A great athlete, only lost one game as a starter. Has great speed and playmaking ability and throws a tight spiral. Has decent awareness. Tough player.

Negatives: Surrounded by a lot of talent, sometimes disappears in big games. Doesn't have size (6 feet tall). Overthrows receivers a lot of times.

8. Trent Edwards Stanford
9. Kevin Kolb Houston
10. Drew Tate Iowa

where do you place Jared Zebransky from Boise State?

I would like to see the Texans take a flyer on Jeff Smith from Georgetown College in the 7th or as an URFA. I thought Smith looked really good in the IntaJuice North-South All-Star game. He is good size at 6'-6" and 246 lbs, has a strong arm, and looks to have good pocket presence and field awareness.

chris leak's footwork is terrible. he is tiny. he has a ***** of an arm. he isnt very fast...what were you thinking? if you based your opinion on that 1 game, then sure, put him at 3, but he hasnt played like that all year long.

Pretty sure most of the success that Florida's offense had against Ohio State was not because of Chris Leak.

Agreed he does not go in my top 5.

When I was at a camp his mechanics and spiral just amazed me...and he was lined up with some nfl greats at this camp. He has always had a lot of potential and I really think in the NFL he will be a good one.

I'm only interested in drafting Brohm, so I'd rather us wait til next year. But I also want us to bring in a vet, NOT BLEDSOE or PLUMMER, have David compete until either a.his contract his up b.gets beat for the starting role or c.gets traded.

Coming into college that was a lot of the talk, about his poor work ethic. He relied on his athleticsm a little too much, and his athletic receivers. Watching a lot of his games this season he didn't really impress me... he had a very good team around him, and he just kind of rode that through the season. I think if he picked up his work ethic, and became a student of the game, he could become a good quarterback...but until then I don't see him doing much in the NFL.

I've heard some similar speculation from a few people that I know that are involved in scouting. They think he doesn't particularly work hard and isn't overly smart and are a little concerned about that. However, there is no denying the amazing arm he has and he has some pretty good athleticism too, mainly it is just a question of whether he can make good decisions on the field all the time and whether he will be able use those physical abilities to a high level and translate those abilities into success on the field.

I liken his on field demenor to VY. They just make things look easy and everyone else better. It's nonchalant but effective. It may appear that he is not giving it everything he has every play, but I think that is just his style of play.
