Coach Kubiak has appeared to turn down the opportunity to coach some of the top seniors in the 2007 Senior Bowl. Kubiak wasted an opportunity to get to know and coach some of the top players (QBs) in the 2007 draft.
On the bright side my other team, 49ers head coach (Mike Nolan) has accepted the opportunity to coach in the 2007 Senior Bowl. Nolan stated last year whenever he and his staff have the chance to coach in the Senior Bowl they will. Nolan feels like it give him an edge by having the opportunity to coach some of the top players in the up coming draft. Nolan has stated by actually being on the field coaching the players, being around the players in meeting, he gets a better feel of what type of players they are and how they respond to being coached. Mike Nolan and his staffed coached in the Senior Bowl last year as well. |

I think he knows he made some mistakes.... personnel wise... roster wise... & he's already lost his Offensive Coordinator, and his Offensive Quality Control Manager more than likely will be leaving. Sure it would be nice to spend some extra time with the senior class coming out. But Kubes got work to do.

Both the Texans and the Niners had good draft last year, with the Texans having the better of the two so far. I hope both of them can have another good draft. |

Exactly....while you may see it as a negative thing, FTIH...I see it as a positive. Kubiak obviously thinks that if he can put in the full amount of work this year we'll be in very good position next. He also apparently has lots of faith in his scout teams. |

I totally agree that hes got a lot of work to do this offseason with alot of positions in question (rb especially) but I also think that he should be looking into the incoming rookies more intently and I think that he should have made time to coach this game.

I think that it's all in how the coach prioritizes things. I would feel the same way if I was Kubiak. He still needs to evaluate every single player on the team, himself, the other coaches, free agents, etc. Hire a couple of new coaches, prepare for the draft, and so on. Sorry but my mind would be more on the team I have at the present time and what to do with who before even looking toward the draft. He has other people to take care of evaluating college talent till he gets up to speed. JMHO

It takes a humble guy to realise that he has more important work to do on his own team rather than put himself in the limelight making friends with QB's who he aint gonna draft.
Well done Kubes.

I couldn't tell if you were being sarcastic or serious, so I'll go with the latter. It's not just what the players are capable of that's determined by evaluation. Do we bring in someone to compete with the guy to get the best out of him or possibly find a better player in the process, can we coach him a certain way to get the best production from him, how has he improved, not improved, do we cut our losses, etc. Kubiak depends alot on his other coaches to keep him up to speed on certain players, as do alot of other coaches, and during the season they don't have much time to sit down as a whole and completely analyze each player. I believe he's already stated that in the past before the bye week and the coaches were at reliant while the players were off. Same situation now but I'm sure they're going alot more in depth. Don't quote me but I think he had previously stated that after the last game they (coaches) would be working for at least a month right after just doing this and some other things when the players went home.

When was the last time Coach Cowher, Parcells, Holmgren, Fox, Payton, Billecheck (sp), Billick, etc. coach the senior bowl?
It doesn't really matter

Yeah but those guys didn't have a 2-14 side to sort out, we did a lot better this season but Kubes is still trying to pick up the pieces from what Capers left in his wake, and that will not just be this off-season, but it'll be there'll still be hard work to be done season after as well, because in 05 we had a team of players who couldn't win games together, and this season a lot of those players were still in the side, hence why we scraped to 6-10, (which is a great improvement btw, im not questioning that) but we still weren't a good team.
Don't question why the guy is putting in this much effort etc, he obviously had his hands full all season trying to make a patchwork side of failures rookies and dropouts win a handful of games, and this is the first opportunity he's got to really look at what he was working with, and therefore what he needs to change. I bet plenty of people would be sunning themselves at this point, be thankful that we've got someone with the commitment to stay and sort things out.

Wand was not a bad prospect. Neither was Jopru. The fact that they didn't make it at the level we wished for, were also part of this game, is a pretty lame link. Either we're going to draft o-lineman high or...we're going to develope our own. You take ANY day two guy you're rolling the dice for sure. But you gotta pick your poison.
Kubiak by passing this opportunity...is telling me they (Rick Smith) are going to put a lot of hard work into thier big board. Not just the draft eligable guys...but everyone in the NFL and on our team. This is the first time they've done it as the bosses. I think you need to cut them some slack. I've been doing a board since November, and I couldn't tell you right now who and who will not be drafted in the fifth round. They've just started. Our brain trust must do that plus campair every availble player to what we have on the roster. And try to figgure out what the other thirty one teams are going to do. By draft time they should have paper on everyone eligable and every player in the NFL. They simply don't have the time this year to fiddle with this game. Our scouts will be there for sure. ...in spades. I've also seen some dung thrown on the board about the second level college guys. Ok...Darrel Green came from some where. Micheal Strahand came from somewhere. Sweetness, Walter Payton came from some where. To ignore those guys is to let opportunity get away. Just because they don't play with our favorite college teams, or the elite teams...doesn't mean they can't play at the next level at a very high level. By the looks of it...we're going to be tramping once again for day two o-lineman...beter hope we hit one or two again this time. I don't care where they played their college ball. All I care is that they can play here. And play at a high level.

At the time believe it or not, Jopru WAS the beter prospect. Jopru could block. Witten still cannot.

Well, I can't imagine that Kubiak's 2006 draft would have been any better had he coached that year's Senior Bowl.
I'm not that concerned about it.

All of the NFL coaches will have someone down there to watch practices. Each team also gets films of practices. Being there and developing relationships with the players of which, you may draft two or three of them if that, is extremely overrated. Lots of players don't play in the game and he only would work with one side. No biggie.
Work to get the best free agents possible and put together a kick butt draft.

Being a 49ers fan also, I really respect Coach Nolan as a coach. I thought he made a good point. I geuss it's more than one way to skin a cat.
"I think coaching the Senior Bowl is a great opportunity and a blessing for the entire San Francisco 49ers organization," Nolan said in a statement. "It's the best way to evaluate players that I've come to know. I think it's an exciting game, and it's an exciting bunch of players. Ninety-five or 100 percent of the players make a team in the NFL, so that's huge. For us to have an opportunity to coach those guys and evaluate them first-hand in meetings, get to know them, eat with them and do all those things for an entire week puts us one up in the evaluation process." |
