Default Evaluate our positions

I want a complete analysis of our OLine, DLine, LB Corps, Secondary, RB's, and WR's. Who should be traded/let go, who should we target through the draft/FA. No need to evaluate Carr cuz there's enough posts about him already. Ok...go!

Default Re: Evaluate our positions

Quarterback - Sage, Van Pelt. (i'm not even going to mention you know who). Sage would make an adequate starter or a good backup, and van pelt's knowledge of the system would make him a good emergency quarterback, i'd keep both. whatever kubiak decides to do at the starter position is fine with me so i'll keep my mouth shut.

Runningback - Dayne, Taylor, Lundy. Dayne showed he worked real well with leach and took over games late in the season. Taylor & Lundy both showed flashes, but are inconsistant (although both were rookies) ... one or both could be replaced. keep an eye out for undrafted rookies and walkons to get a look during preseason. i doubt we'll spend any significant effort at RB.

Full Back - Leach. great find here and a position we're stable at.

Wide Receiver - AJ, Moulds, Walter, David Anderson, Jerome Mathis. another position we're strong in. walter makes an adequate 3, and anderson might see time taking that role next season. a late second day pick is possible here as practice squad depth.

Tight End - Putzier, Daniels. bruener might or might not be back, and we should look for a little depth. i'd look solely at free agency and walk-ons since we already have our top 2.

Offensive Tackle - Winston, Spencer. very weak right here, especially with spencer's injury. i think winston would make a good "swing tackle" and fill the role backing up both sides. 1 starting offensive tackle is needed through FA or the draft (if spencer comes back). if spencer doesnt return, we need a starting tackle on both sides. i'd highly recommend releasing salaam, and only keeping weigert if we're in an emergency situation. i'd eye free agency here, but focus on finding an athletic OT on the first day of the draft.

Offensive Guard - Weary, Pitts, Mckinney. i'd like to see a starter to replace weary, but we're not in dire need at the guard position. we'll be better off if weary is replaced and works on backing up both the guard and center position ... allowing us to release mckinney. second day draft possibility, but i'd focus more on depth through younger free agents.

Offensive Center - Flanagan, Hodgdon. not an emergency, but approaching one. flanagan's legs are falling off and hodgdon isnt going to cut it. hodgdon should be cut, and we need to look for a center in the draft to become flanagan's replacement ... rounds 3-5 would be ideal.

Defensive End - Mario, Peek, Babin, Kalu. mario, babin, & kalu stay. peek will probably be picked up by someone else. babin's play improved as the season went on and his playing time increased. if he starts from day one, he's a competant starter but we could look for an upgrade. i'd keep an eye out in the draft for a second day pass rusher.

Defensive Tackle - Weaver, Payne, Johnson. i'm not even going to guess who we keep & dont from this group. i'd like to keep payne if his contract isnt too heavy, and i'm pretty sure we'll hold onto travis johnson. dalton, malone, and the street walkons should be brought back for training camp to try out. a first day draft pick here wouldnt hurt my feelings, but i'd prefer to keep it in the FA market.

Outside Linebacker - Wong, Greenwood, Orr. we need 2 starters here. Orr is a keeper, but not a starter. unless greenwood would kill us financially, should be released. wong will likely be kept, but has lost several steps and should be a backup at most ... if it'd save significant moneys, wong might need to be released. a first day draft pick needs to go here.

Inside Linebacker - Ryans, Rainer. very good at this spot, leave it alone.

Cornerback - Robinson, Faggins, Roc Alexander. we're thin here and a draft pick could be used at some point if it's an obvious BPA. faggins makes a solid nickel, but doesnt have the feet to keep up with most #2's. a ballhawk free safety might mask that and let us get by, but we need better depth. there might be a couple big free agents here such as nate clements who should be given heavy consideration ... a veteran would make a bigger impact here than a more athletic rookie. if we only get one big name in free agency this year, it should be either at cornerback or offensive line.

Safety - Brown, Earl, Simmons. we NEED a free safety. earl is a decent SS, and brown makes an above average backup at that spot. simmons makes a decent backup FS and can be used in dime packages along with being a great special teamer. free safety is our most pressing need on defense, so i'd be happy using a first round pick here.

Kicker - Brown. have open tryouts here and give it to the kid with the most potential at training camp. i dont like brown.

Punter - Stanley. same as brown.

i havent even started my research into free agency or the draft yet, so you'd want to see other sections of the website to assign names to the positions.

Kubiak has been talking playmakers on offense.

Given the current construction of our team, that seems code for running back.

Kubiak's offense needs a consistent running game.

Though Denver when Kubiak was there drafted defense higher than offense typically, it would non-surprise me if they took RB at 8.

i read it earlier and liked it as a defense heavy draft (which is what i think it should be). free safety i'd make more of a priority in the draft and IMO we'll need to target another offensive lineman late first day or early second day. cornerback i'd look more towards bringing in a veteran free agent and spending some money.

TC i heard that too about looking for more playmakers on offense, but i dont think that's the least bit of our problems unless he's talking about the quarterback position. dayne's no gamebreaker, but i'd personally prefer consistancy to explosion.

Not too many immediately playmakers in the QB position. It is not the term you usually use for that position (save VY).

Biggest problem this year was a consistent running game. You can't tell me that you were comfortable with what you saw all season.

I'd look for a Defense heavy draft as well, too often again this year we were leading late in the game only to have an offense come straight down the field back at us and take the game.

We have the makings for a talented D and if Kubes makes the right decisions this offseason we could sort out some pretty big holes for 07.

It seems that Carr's contract is too big a hit to bin him off this year and the RB position needs a year to see how Taylor and DD pan out if you ask me so why not look at Defense, and O-line with what money we've got this season and give both Carr and the running game the best possible chance of proving themselves at a time in this franchise's history when we'll be better equipped to upgrade there in the future.

I think this years draft talent is ok at best so the thing you do is be smart and pick players that will help . In other words do not pick for a specific need if there is not a worthy prospect to fill it .

Default Re: Evaluate our positions

QB..... I think David will be back.... But Sage will start so we can see what our OL looks like. I haven't seen anything to make me believe he should be the starter, but I don't see Kubiak giving up on him....... yet. But I like the idea of grooming VanPelt or Porter.

RB.... Dayne, Taylor, DDW, Lundy, Gado..... I think we'll be looking to move Lundy & Gado.... DDW..... I just want to see him run again. But the run game will be Dayne & Taylor..... more Dayne than Taylor to start the season, but more Taylor as time moves on....... I also see another back to work out in the draft.

WR.... AJ, Moulds, Walter, Anderson.... all looked good. they just need more opportunities to make plays.

FB.... Vonta Leech.... he's the man, doubt we'll see Cook again.

Center...... Mckinney is our new Center.. Flanagan's the backup..... Hogdon won't be a Texan.

Guard...... Pitts is locked in as our pulling guard. Weary is a fine starter. Bedell I haven't seen enough of him to say....

Offensive Tackle..... we need to look for a Tackle in FA..... hopefully if we start looking early, we can find a starter. I like Winston at Right Tackle. If we don't get a starter in FA, or Spencer can't go... I can see Winston moving to left tackle. He looks pretty stout, holds his own ground, and moves his feet well,IMHO to stay in front of his assignment. Moving Winston to LT, and Weigart in at RT.. I think we'll be good. I don't see us starting a rookie at LT again.

TEs.... Sorry, but Bruenner stays... he doesn't stretch the field vertically... but he's the only real dual threat TE we have. Owen needs to work on his blocking... Putz.... I expected more from him.

DEs.... Mario, Babin, Weaver...... IMHO all three are solid DEs... not necessarily pass rushers, but solid. I beleive Mario has what it takes to be a threatening force in the backfield. but I don't want to risk turning him into a pass rushing specialist. Babin can also be something special with some coaching. ND Kalu is a good locker room guy.

DTs.... Maddox is a Texan period.... Thomas Johnson and the others should compete for a spot. But I see a rookie starting at DT in '07

LBs.... I can't see us getting rid of Marlon.... I think he's earned his keep, if not his pay. All our LBs are week in pass protection. Shantee Orr.. hmmm

Safety.. I honestly think Glen Earl is a starter in this league. Sure we can stand to upgrade, but I think Earl is a fine starter. CC Brown.... another fine SS..... we need a FS.

CB.... Dunta is our best tackler pound for pound. but if he doesn't start knocking some balls out of the recievers hands on these tackles, we can stand an upgrade at both corners. Lewis Sanders I'd like to see moved to FS, and two new CB brought in. a FA & a draft pick would be great.

i'm going to put a lot of that onto one player - jameel cook. our running game took off the same time leach became starter. outside of that, we did a whole lot of experimenting this season on offense both with personnel and with the playbook (as you've mentioned in regards to blocking schemes). i'm not happy with the entire season, but i was happy with the way things ended. dayne & leach work well together and the backups were rotated to find a good compliment (as opposed to rotating starters as we'd been doing). and really we werent that bad running the ball, ranking 21st in yards and 17th in TD's. we were just inconsistant. i think that the stability, along with a full offseason, will get the running game as it should be. it takes it up a notch and nullifies all of these discussions if DD/DW does infact come back at 100%.

that being said, having a track star competing for a job during training camp wouldn't hurt my feelings because we really dont have a major homerun threat in the backfield.

True that.

Rick Smith said the same thing on SportsRadio 610 yesterday.

We ran well against teams that allow other teams to run well. We only had 6 bad games... under 100 yards. they were just spaced pretty evenly. We definitely need to get better, but with the OL learning a new system, and the changing personnell.... you really shouldn't expect much more than we got.

I'm not taking anything away from Vonta.... he is a damn good blocking full back, and while he won't stretch the field vertically like Cook could(for a full back) he's got good hands, good balance, and good instincts to turn it up field, and if you thought Dayne was a load to bring down.....

But early in the season, our big runs were coming off the right side...... weigart... & mcKinney to some extent(Weary is better).... after he went down, we started to pull Pitts around that edge more often.... about the same time we picked up Leach..... those two have been the biggest improvement to our run game this year.

It wasn't the running backs. The inconsistant running game was a direct result in missing on five offensive tackles in five years. And I don't think anyone in here is going to equate Flannagan and Weary with anything close to a 50 million dollar all pro. They may well take Ginn Jr. or All Day. But, you're misinterppreting cap straped for production. They by- pass the o-line again, be virtually the same results as last year. I'll believe the o pick when I see it. Even All Day or Lynch is going to have trouble generating a consistant attack behind this group. Anyone tells you anything different, they don't know what they're talking about. They need to make a sexy pick to easy the fans...ok. Tells me they're under pressure to go to the play off next season. Anyone can see they , even without the massive injuries, simply do not have the tallent to compete for the play offs next year. Tallent matters.

I believe the blocking was a significant problem. Not just the consistency but the way they were doing it. Did anybody see any cut blocking as the season progressed?

That being said, who in the league has a worse group of backs than the Texans?

Do you think that we have some of the best backs in the league?

If they are making noises about playmakers, I am guessing they aren't thinking Olinemen.

Gary Kubiak wants more playmakers on offense because as he described, it is just too difficult in the NFL to sustain drives only gaining 3 or 4 yards a pop. Somewhere in between you need to make those big plays. I have to agree with Texans_Chick in that I think Kubiak is really looking to draft a running back with one of our first two picks. We had very little consistency in our running game this season and that's where it all starts in this offense.

The way Kubiak's talking makes me think that when he looked at the film, he was seeing yards that none of our backs were getting and that makes me think that our line was blocking better than we might think. I'm not going to be surprised if we go for a first day running back. I don't know if we'll go that way with the first pick but it depends on who drops to us. I'm expecting us to go DB... but who knows at this point.

I thought that scooter did a nice job

QB C JaMarcus Russell in the first if available, otherwise mid rd developmental player, make a decision on Carr &/or bring in Plummer

RB C+ excited to see Dom play again, Chris Taylor get more carries, Wally on long yardage situations (blocking & receiving out of the backfield) Dayne your short yardage specialist. still need more quality depth/speed. later rd pick once again.

FB B+ Love what Leach brings to the table, could become all pro in a couple more years if he keeps it up.

WR B+ hard to tell, excuse me deep, deep class Texans will bite somewhere, maybe early given the playmaker/bpa arguement.

TE B would like to see someone has fresh legs & cause match-up problems. a basketball, athletic, Gates type of playmaker.

OT D next year, next year, next year is the Texans battle cry, still its gonna be next year (other than a good FA pick-up) maybe a late round developmental prospect or if Levi Brown slips down to our 2nd rd. pick.

OG B pretty solid group but always need to add depth and youth.

C C- wanted Mangold, must find another leader at this position, while McKinney is doing a fine job he is near the end of the trail, Drew has got Hodgdon disease.

DE A Mario will be fine if we get him some help in the interior. if Gaines where available he would certainly be the best player available, not such a reach for the Texans even though the field @ Relient would be trashed.

DT D big as need as OT. should spend a 1st day pick on one.

OLB C Rufus is my man in the 2nd along with Morlan Greenwood that would raise the bar to at least a B.

MLB A

CB C could spend a 1st rounder on one, more likely latter the first day

FS C I'm on the Reggie Nelson bandwagon. can't wait to see the game monday night.

SS B- Earl has stepped it up, very physical, could use more speed.

its unanimous the Texans will address the need to provide David Carr better pass protection & the running game more consistancy. So of the available guys coming out who do you all feel would be the best fit, which round & why?

Logan Mankins, Senior from Fresno State LT but also versatile & could replace Pitts @ LG. He has history already protecting Carr's left side, is a leader & only lacks height as a starting left tackle, provides immediate help to the offensive line (maybe could be aquired with additional second round pick via trading down in 1st round).

Chris Spencer, underclassman just declared, Ole Miss 6'4" 310 lbs & can play several positions (including center) across the line. I'm not sure where he will grade out but might be deserving one of the Texans 3rd round picks, eventually becoming McKinney's replacement. There really does'nt seem to be a lot of talented offensive lineman coming out, therefore the Texans may be faced with paying a premium, we've got a few months to figure it out.

1st round - ?
2nd round - Logan Mankins, LT/LG
3rd round - Chris Spencer, Center/RG
3rd round - ?

Daja Vu all over again. One of these years you guys are going to get it. Look familuar there beerlover ?

I see this..

QB Carr
RB Taylor/Dayne/DDW/Free Agent
FB- Leech
LT - Draft or FA
LG- Pitts
C- Mckinney or FA
RG- Winston
RT-Spencer or FA/Draft
WR-AJ and Moulds

DE Mario and FA/drafts
DT Weaver and FA/Draft
OLBs- FAs or Draft
MLB Ryans
CB's Dunta and FL/Draft with Faggins nickelback
FS- Draft/FA's
SS- Earl

I truely think that will be our lineup for the first game next year
