I felt bad for him in that quote. but he did not play well enough this season and has to go.

Another decision this offseason for the Texans is what to do at running back if Domanick Davis is able to return from the knee injury that caused him to miss this season. The early struggles of the offense came when they were left without a proven running back after passing on Reggie Bush in the draft, only to lose Davis. Ron Dayne had the best stretch of his NFL career to end the season and wants to stay in Houston, but the team likely won't keep both him and Davis.

I think Dayne, Taylor, and Williams can both be three good running backs on one team. Depending on if Tatum Bell or Clinton Portis come here is the question, though.

'If's' a big stretch of a word, but if I remember correctly, there were more than one or two games that were VERY winnable. You're talking a .500 team at that point. There were many on this board that I would call very knowledgeable posters, that predicted a 6-10 season, and said that that would be a significant improvement...

Not that DREADFUL in my opinion.

Interesting article...but I put little stock in anybody who refers to Reggie Bush as a "proven back".

At this point, knowing what I know about both of them I'd keep Dayne and try to trade Domanick if I could. If I couldn't I'd release or try and reach an injury settlement. I'd be damned if I would go into the off-season counting on him to make it back. I don't care how good he says it feels right now he's got a knee problem that's never going to go away and the moment it doesn't feel right he's going to hit the IR list.

I love what DD did for us but I'll be shocked if DW makes it through training camp without a repeat of last years "It felt great but then I practiced and now it's hurting" experience.

Ron Dayne on the other hand is a back who's got hardly any miles on him since being drafted in the NFL because the Giants never seemed to know how to use him. He looked done before he got to Denver and, if their backfield hadn't been crowded and his toe hurting he might be the comeback player of the year right now.

I hope we keep him because I think he's got 3-4 years of heavy running in him. The system suits him and he seems more motivated than he's ever been.

If you take the media and fans out of the equation, you'd think this guy would be our franchise QB that'd be here for the rest of his NFL career. The front office hasn't shown anything that would tell us that Carr would not stay here for 2007. Even if we do keep him for another year, I'd like to see us at least pick a QB in the draft around the 4-5th round.

what options do the texans have as far as working out DD during the offseason? i'd think kubiak would want to see DD in practice simulations and some game-type excercises before making any decisions. if DD could prove that he's able to survive a rigorous series of workouts and make it to training camp at 100% it'd go a long way to simplifying our draft & FA since runningback can be removed from the "need" pile. if he cant, we know that before those periods unlike last season and move towards the options you listed.

good points on dayne, i bet he sees a lot more time next year.

Very True the texans silence on this topic is more than they could say if they believed in carr i think they would of come out and said it.

He isn't proven but he looked like a true RB against the Giants two weeks ago and was running hard. The guy is tough.

As for the article. What are the Texans going to say about him and in their meetings. They'd lose all leverage. I'd think though, with his contract, that if they were positive about him, they'd just say so!

If you read Kubes latest press conference (I think it's the latest one) he talks about having made a mistake on expecting players to be back from injury. I think he was primarily talking about DD/DW when he said that. I have a sneaking suspicion that DD/DW told Kubes he was good to go and that helped drive the Mario pick. I think DD/DW might have done that to keep RB out of Houston because he probably felt he wouldn't get his starting job back. I don't think Kubes thinks that Mario was a bad pick by any streatch of the imagination, but he is an ofensive guy and probably would have went RB if DD/DW didn't say he was good to go. If you remember the early season press conferences they talked alot about how much DD/DW not being ready realy hurt. I suspect that Kubes isn't real happy with DD/DW.

Just speculation on my part, but they haven't normally come out and stated that players under contract will definitely be returning next year. He is under contract. I'm sure there's some deliberation on the matter, but the media overblows things a fair bit.

My guess (being a glass half-full guy): They want to give the impression that they are considering carefully what to do with Carr, so that later, when they "finally" decide to keep him, they can say that carefully studied the problem and he is the best solution.

In other words, to minimize flak from the fans.

If Carr is back next season he will be competing for his job. Sage did well, but he does not do as well when he plays full time. I could see us doing a rotation with the QB next season maybe like Carr does the first half and Sage does the second half. Then start molding the new QB on the sideline and showing him the ropes so that he can start the next season.

I really believe Carr will be back, due to the options out there right now i'm not very impressed with, But i also feel he will be competing with Sage for the starting job...

For the first time SI got the story right.

I believe Carr will be back also, I just don't think we are going to go into the season depending on him. I believe we will either bring in Jake or draft another QB and put the starting role up for grabs for all QBs in camp.

As for DW, I say go ahead and go for Portis or another FA RB, If not draft another RB. Who cares if DW is back. If his knee is healthy, it will show when he beats out the current 3 and whoever else we get.

If not, then you got your reason to release, trade what have you.

Unfortunately I feel that Carr will be back next year too. I feel that there are options out that to bring someone else in, but McNair still believes that Carr is the future of the team. Just my 2 cents.

They may let Sage and Carr compete for the starting job, but if Carr stays you can bet that they will not bring in a veteran QB and you can also bet that Carr will "Win" the starting position. It would be crazy to pay the type of money that Carr is making to just sit on the bench.

McNair and Kubiak have both been asked about replacing Carr and neither has said that it absolutely won't happen and that Carr is their man. Right? If someone asks them if DeMeco Ryans will be their starting MLB next season what do you think the response would be?
