Default SI's Draft "Do Over"

SI.com has posted a Draft "Do Over" - basically the way they would see this past draft going if it were held today, with the benefit of hindsight:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...rt1/index.html

It's pretty interesting, though most of their picks are need oriented. They have the Texans taking Marcus McNeill with the first pick. But, the most interesting thing to me is that the top two defensive players they have being taken are Mario (at #6) and DeMeco (at #8). It makes me feel good about our draft to think that even with the benefit of some hindsight, we got arguably the two top defensive players in the entire draft.

I wanted McNeil. With his size, I knew he had to be somewhat serviceable. IMO, he's the ROY.

Have you seen him play? I bet you'd give up LenDale for McNeil faster than you can say ManBoobs.

If we had taken McNeil, he would have been a HUGE bust once Ron Dayne ran over him...

I've been very happy with Mario, and I was one of the people who thought it was the most bone-headed decisions the Texans ever made. Mario is looking impressive and Reggie is floundering. Mario has character, and Reggie has character flaws.

Demeco is the best pick we made.

Ron Dayne would've gotten a concusion if he got anywhere near McNeil.

Wow, that is quite a list. The Texans did well for themselves. Kubiak is a heck of a talent evaluator.

McNeil had this written about:
http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2006/mcneill_marcus

SUMMARY
McNeil was an extremely frustrating player to grade because with his size, long arms, tremendous foot quickness and athleticism, he has the talent to be a dominant offensive tackle. But way too often he was beaten and his man ended up making or disrupting the play. It is always a big concern when an offensive lineman does not play with an aggressive streak because in the trench battles of the NFL, the winner is often the lineman who wants it the most. However, the biggest concern is that for a player who started so many games at Auburn, his footwork, knee bend and use of hands are terrible and it makes you wonder about his ability to learn technique from coaches. When you watch him lean, over-extend and fall off so many run blocks, you think he is a limited athlete, but clearly he just gets lazy with his feet and does not stay and finish his blocks. Overall, McNeil is no doubt talented enough, but he needs to really step up his level of competitiveness, must greatly improve his technique and finish his blocks in order to play up to his ability in the NFL. Drafting McNeil is nothing to be excited about because offensive linemen with his lack of competitiveness often do not succeed in the NFL despite their athleticism.

Then Maques Colston was almost not even drafted. He was the 4th to the last palyer taken in the SEVENTH Round!!!!!!!

I'm glad with Williams and Demeco!!!

My point was also that the top 2 picks were out of nowhere!!!!

Then you have the 3 quarterbacks!!!

Then you have Williams, Bush, then Demeco Ryans!!!!

Even Sports Illustrated is complementing Kubiacs first class

2 of the top 8 picks. And the top 2 defensive guys in the draft!!!

Not bad not bad

Actually even better than that. Two of the top 8 !
**
But the McNeil selection is interesting and so is his success as SDs
LT. He was thought not to be LT material for the NFL, but many expected him
to end up at the less challenging right side of the line. Same could be said
about the Saints Jamaal Brown. These so called experts just don't do very good at projecting college OLineman to the NFL.
McNeil & Brown not thought to be potentail NFL LTs who are now succeeding, and Robert Gallery, projected in college to be one of the best NFL LTs in years, now somewhere between inferior and an outright bust in
the league as a LT.

McNeil shouldn't go 1 but I'm suprised he and Max Jean-Giles fell so far in the draft. They were great college players.

Yeah could you imagine the crap we would have heard for passing up D'Brick for McNeil along with the Bush and Vince flak, think I would have shot myself. But honestly I don't hear people talking smack now saying we made a bad choice except Richard Justice and some homers on this MB.

San Francisco 49ers
MARIO WILLIAMS, DE, North Carolina State
Original pick: Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland
The 49ers need some pass rush help, and Williams is the kind of talent Mike Nolan can build around. He's not a perfect 3-4 end you say? Well, with the 49ers drafting Manny Lawson later in the first round in real life, they could switch to the 4-3 and re-create the starting N.C. State defensive end tandem.
I find it refreshing that Mario is still a top ten pick, based on production, even without a high sack count.

I find it odd they'd think SF would have to switch to a 4-3 to play Mario..... he'd be a perfect 3-4 DE.

I know that sounds like an insult around here, with people thinking TJ has the perfect build for a 3-4 DE (which he doesn't..... TJ is more of a nose tackle)

Or Marcus Spears or Chris Canty of the Cowboys......

Couple things.
Don't you think using any top overall pick for a 3-4 lineman would be a waste, a misplaced use of scarce cap funds on a position that's primary function is to tie-up OLineman to free backers to make the tackles ?
But I think you're right about Mario, he would be a tremendous 3-4 end. Its
just that it would be a waste of his athletic skills that could be more valuable in a 4-3.
And its always been my understanding that TJ (we are talking Travis Johnson. right ?), is a natural DT for the 4-3 and not as an end or nose
in the 3-4. 4-3 DT is what he played at FSU.
