Default Well's Haters

This really gets me! Wells for the second time put up a decent showing against a good run defense (ranked 6th), and he gets **** for it... Come on folks.. Get off his back. He put up a touchdown, over 100 yards (not including the TD called back due to holding). Give him some credit... The zone has opened up some routes for him he didnt have in the past, and the O-line is now helping him... He aint a bad player, get off his case...

Who's givin' him ****? He has gotten perhaps more than blame than he deserved over the past few years, but everybody seems to be giving him his well deserved props today.
After a few years he is developing into exactly what we thought when we drafted him. It took him a while to warm up at Ohio State, too.

One comment in another thread was:

1. Wells was running well but was RARELY going for more than about 4 yards. His numbers can be attributed to a few good runs, and a slew of average ones.

There have been a few others around.

I saw him fighting hard for yards... I only saw 1 time he really hesitated, and for being a third string running back, I thought he did a very good job stepping up and in.

Yeah... My hate on the guy has a reason to simmer down, now... I guess the horrible line and rookie inexperience were to blame. We have three good backs, each with a very different style.

Default Believed in him since we drafted him....

If you could pull up the old MB you could check out my support of J.Wells from the start. I am a Big D.Davis fan because he is from LSU and wish him always the best but I wish that for all our players...I have only voice dislike of one player because he sucked....STEVENS!!!! That boy couldn't play on my High School team(Cy~Fair FIGHTING BOBCATS!!!). Anyway, I am really glad he has stepped up and ran hard over the past few games that he has gotten his second chance.

good game by Wells!!! I am glad we got to step it up when we needed it.

I stay even keel on this.. I don't think we have a runningback that strikes the fear into opposing defenses at this moment... but if we don't fumble we have some backs that can make woody hayes happy (ole 3 yards and a cloud of dust)

He's our 1st 100 yard rusher this season. On top of that he did it against a defense that was 6th in the NFL against the run, which says alot about both the blocking up front and Wells himself. I'm happy for the guy, he played a big part in the win.

geez yall take everything out of context. I posted the comment about wells rarely going over 4 yards.. but it was in relation to him getting the ball 3 times in a row on the 10 yard line.. when they guy is RARELY breaking for more than 4 yards.. and he has just been stuffed for no gain .. and you have 10 yards to go.. you dont give him the ball a 3rd time expecting him to amazingly run it in.

Anyway.. ive been a wells supporter for a LONG time and I think he really stepped up and showed that he is capable of playing in the NFL. I think he may have won the #2 spot behind davis.

It is nice to have depth. I prefer DD and Hollings to Wells, but he is a quality backup and special teams performer. I just don't see the big play potential from Wells.

Question Wells ahead of Hollings in Depth Chart?

I was just wondering if anyone knew if Wells has moved ahead of Hollings on the depth chart. Hollings got a few carries last game, but Wells definitely had the majority. I wanted to know if they are trying to ease Hollings back after the injury or if Wells is now No.2.

aphia1996...hell yeah i second your post...didn't know there was another cy-fair alumni here...bfnd baby

as for wells...he's a decent runner...still think he runs to tall when hitting the hole but that's my opinion...he did have a fumble inside the redzone which kills me...cause other than that he had an awesome say at work...still think we need to find a back that can hold onto the rock and can be an everydown back...not to mention can stay healthy throughout the season

I was pretty high on what Wells might be able to do going into 2002 and then after watching him for a year I decided that he simply is what he is. He's not terribly fast, he doesn't run all that tough, and he isn't going to start for anyone, anywhere.

Last season the difference between what DD was doing and what Wells had done the year before was striking. I did feel that Wells had nowhere near the line play that DD got so direct comparisons weren't particularly fair to Wells. He got zero blocking in 2002, Davis got pretty good blocking at times in 2003. Regardless Davis still seems to me to be the better back.

Watching Wells yesterday getting his first start of 2004 I saw a lot of things I liked out of him. He ran hard which is something he didn't do at times in 2002 and it's something he can fix (and he apparently has fixed it). He still isn't fast (which is something that he can't fix and never will) but he's seemingly found his style.

He still lacks the ability to change direction quickly and create something. He's not going to break loose to often. He's going to follow his blockers and get what's there. If they dominate then he's going to get good yards. If they get beat he's going to get 2.6 yards or something like that.

Right now I'm calling him our 2nd best back. I put him ahead of Hollings based solely on his experience and the growth he's shown. He's ahead of him in that area and that makes him more effective. Hollings is obviously faster and has more upside but he's yet to get in there long enough to really produce and get the reps he needs to improve.

I'm proud of Wells for what he did yesterday. He stepped up and he deserves all the praise he gets. Nobody should be hating on Wells after yesterday and I certainly don't. It doesn't erase the limitations he has though. They're just simple facts. The only place Wells would be starting in this league is Miami right now.

If Wells starts again next week and throws out another good performance with a higher average per carry then I'll take my hat off to him. If he knocks off some more rust and gets better then maybe he's more than he's shown. I'm not going to be the one to say it's impossible. I believe it's unlikely, that's all.

I think Davis is much better but I do question his durability. It seems as though this getting nicked up is a pattern for him and that's not his fault but it is a problem.

Wells is good though and he has a great team attitude which is so important.

I think Wells has improved immensely since 2002 when he was running behind a mediocre offensive line. I wonder how we will juggle the carries once all 3 of our runningbacks are healthy.

Look Wells had a very nice game yesterday. He had an average rookie season because he was a rookie and our o-line was **** back then. Obviously he has improved but I'm not going to declare him the starter over Domanick Davis just yet. Let's wait and see what happens, but a Davis and Wells backfield looks very nice.
