I was attempting to determine if the Texans are the best three win team in the NFL. The task proved more difficult than I imagined.
The three win teams are Houston, Tampa Bay, and Cleveland. We beat Tampa Bay in the final game of the pre-season. Since it was the final game, it only proves that our second stringers, third stringers, and soon to be cuttees scored more points than their equivalent players did. That’s good enough for me! We are better than Tamp Bay. Cleveland is more difficult to determine. I would put Houston and Cleveland at about even – tied atop the standings for 3-8 teams. Luckily we face off to end the season, so one way or another the tie will be broken. This Sunday’s game becomes pivotal. If two loss Oakland beats Houston then they not only leap into the mix of three win teams, they also leapfrog the Texans. That would leave Cleveland (assuming a loss) tied with Oakland, then the Texans with Tampa Bay trailing in the cellar. If the Texans beat the Raiders this week, then it is the Texans who will be moving up a class. The four win teams are a much tougher division for us though. As it stands now, we would be facing defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh and two teams that have already beat us – Washington and Tennessee. We would start at the bottom of that group, but the Tennessee game on Dec. 10 would then become pivotal. Next week I hope to be presenting my "The Best Four Win Team" analysis. Please consider persiflage in response to this post.

Is this another way of saying who deserves the #1 pick...that goes to Detroit.
IMO..it's Cleveland, they beat higher ranked teams.

The most important game of the season is always the next game, regardless of who you play. I didn't like a game being dubbed "pivotal" by the coach. I'd like to think they all are.

Like someone said before on a thread of mine. If The Texans want to be a good team they have to start beating the teams they are supposed to beat.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I say we beat Indy finally on Dec. 24. Why? I don't know, just figured we're due to beat them sometime. As dissapointing this season may be, If we could beat Tennessee and Indy and go 4-2 in the division, it would be something to build on.

Sure you should give 100% effort in every game....But that's never going to happen...It's not always something that happens consciously....Sometimes you just get into a lull as an athlete and you loose that focus.....Like when you play Madden...When you play someone really good, it gets the juices flowing and you normally play one of your better games....When you play a scrub...you lose focus.... Not saying that there are any scrubs in the NFL but the comparison has to do more so with the importance of a game and not really with the competititon.... When a coach tells his players that the game is "important"...it is nothing more than a wake-up call... |

This is certainly a food for thought thread. But honestly, I'd like more analysis of the comparison between teams with 8 losses.
At this point, I don't have a lot of confidence in our team. They just don't seem to have a burning desire to win, at least from an outside perspective. I'm sure individually, each player wants to win. But as a team, there seems be a general disposition of a losing mentality. With five games remaining for the season, I'm not ready to say that they will definitely beat anybody. I certainly hope they can get a couple of more wins, but that'll be a gift to us more than anything else. |

Winning probably is rapidly dimenishing in importance to many of our players,
and unfortunately most of all among our most talented players. If we were now fighting for a playoff spot, can you just imagine the intensity, the ferocity of players like Dunta, AJ, A. Weaver, etc. But where's the real incentive for them to play hard now. To keep their jobs ? C'mon, those guys are here next year no matter what. But we have got a lot of guys who should be playing hard for their very survival on this team. Just not our leading players, only the marginal types. And do we ever have a gob of marginal type players ! And I suspect many of the rookies are still playing hard, but they have to be experiencing very high levels of fatigue. Not only physical, but psychological. By defintion rookies have never experienced the duration of an NFL season before. |

That would be too negative.

I'm at a loss for words. I think I'll just repeat it for effect. Note I have deleted part of the first sentence, but I think it really brings home the point: ...sometimes you just get into a lull as an athlete...Like when you play Madden... IIRC, you are an athlete, or used to be, so I am shocked and awed even further...
