Kubiak on Eric Winston:
"He'll definitely be active," Kubiak said. "He's a swing tackle going into the game, and we made that decision during the bye that, I know it's a lot for him to handle, but for the future of the team, we've got to find out where he's at and how far he can come. But he is a swing tackle as we move on." Kubiak friday quotes at www.houstontexans.com |

I put him at more likely than not to get in the game. I can't see Salaam, especially coming off a minor groin injury, making it through an entire game against the Cowboys. Watching him in the preseason, he seemed to completely be better than the second teamers on both sides. Bigger and played stronger. First team is different. He prefers playing left tackle, but got most of his off-season work at right. I feel more comfortable with him in the game than Bedell, but that is some faint praising going on.

" but we’re not going to find out where he’s at or how far he can come if we don’t just basically throw him in the fire."
******************************************** I dunno, but somehow I wish Kubiak was making this observation during the preseason for an exhibition game, instead of during the regular season at Irving against the Cowboys high-powered D. Buckle up there David, the experimentation of the Texans OL continues at your expense more than anybodys. Dang I got a bad feeling about this, kinda like going into the Indy Dome with Seth Wand or Victor Riley. I can't blame Kubiak though, because unlike Capers & Co. he drafted not one but 2 tackles this year so he's actively trying to get our Oline fixed. Just a rotten break about Spencer. |

I expect Winston to play too. Good luck to the rookie tackle.

Interesting--you know how many sacks Freeney had the 1st time he was across from Wand as a starter? ZERO. Wand had a lot to work on but he doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as Riley as a LT.

Seeing how Carr is now the #1 rated QB, has had plenty of experience behind a bad line, has a better WR and TE group and is a warrior. He should have no problem adjusting appropriately in year 5 to having a rookie play LT at times. Great players or at least veterans make others better around them by making plays that sweep other's mistakes under the rug. Hopefully this is the game where Carr shows everyone he has taken that next step. We need our perceived best player to have a player of the week type performance.

__it happens. People get hurt and others have to step up. That's the NFL.
Losing Spencer was a major blow and I hope he fully recovers for next season so he and Winston can assume the role of bookend tackles for the Texans - hopefully for many years to come. Last edited by aj.; 10-14-2006 at 11:16 AM. |

Speaking of Spencer, I was hearing stuff that the leg break was a very bad one . . where even with the surgery, it's still iffy about a full recovery. Anyone know anything more about it?

I hope that is bad information. That would be awful for the young man.

idea about his prospects for recover. Initially some thought the fracture was actually a silver lining because it was thought to be a less severe type injury that maybe a blown knee involving cartlidge, ligaments. But apparently this was a compound fracture that was very severe, very extreme. The fact that there is so much uncertainty and no update, really no news of any kind a full month after the injury is very troubling IMO. |

How do you guys feel about Winston getting his chance should the need arise?

"Erics been coming along great, and he's going to see some time in this game due to a normal rotation" would have been much better than, "He's our swing tackle, if he get's an opportunity to play, we'll be able to see what we got, because right now, it doesn't look good for the kid" That's the way I see it anyway. |

With the uncertainty of Spencer's injury I am really hoping Winston will get a lot of play opportunities in the next several games. IMO we need to see what we have in Winston, ie. is he a player of our future. Some folks need to get into the "real thing" to shine, let's hope Winston is one of them!

The info I got on Spencer's injury came from one of his friends/coworkers. All he said for sure was that Spencer had a high break. It wasn't clear at the time I talked to him whether or not Spencer also suffered the soft tissue damage common to that type of break.

Kubiak talked about the seriousness (and location) of Spencer's leg fracture the day after the Indy game. Speculating on whether it's career threatening is probably not a good thing at this point. No offense to anyone but anything other than a statement from Spencer's doc, Kevin Bastin, or Kubiak is second hand info at best.
Wong's knee injury was supposed to be career threatening and he's going to end up being our starting Sam a little more than a year later... |

Winston was clearly an overrated player coming out of Miami, just as Spencer was an underrated player coming out of Pitt. Maybe he can find himself, because there's little doubt we will need him on the field and probably sooner rather than later, with the recovering Salaam (groin injuries only heal with extended rest) at LT, and the injury-prone Weigert at RT. |
