Default Chronic: Texans' Kubiak wants to see some changes

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4247466.html

Quote:
The coaches then divulged the final report to the players.

"It wasn't vindictive at all," running back Samkon Gado said. "It wasn't them berating us and telling us we'd done a horrible job. I think it was kind of matter-of-fact.

"During the meeting when coach Kubiak was saying it, I was thinking, 'This is cool. He's admitting his mistakes.' Granted, it's not his fault that we're 1-3. That's on us. But it's cool that he addressed us as an organization and as a team and said, 'OK, this is where we are, and this is where we need to be.' He approached it like a man."

Kubiak said no starters have lost their jobs and that the changes will focus mostly on helping put players in position to be more successful.

"There may be some things we do different personnel-wise, but to say there are going to be some wholesale changes in the lineup, no," Kubiak said.

Kubiak stood in front of the players and broke down a slew of numbers. For the offense, he explained how many passes were completed in the different protection schemes and which protections led to sacks. But it was clear the most obvious deficiency offensively is in the running game.

Yes we realize Mario sucks. His 1.5 sacks were sorry and his tipped pass on the two point coversion was a fluke. Let's make sure we spite our future especially coming off a win, going into Dallas and the fact that Mario will be with us for years.

Overall, the team seems to be on a positive track. Man, I can't wait to get to the draft.

Wow someone seems a bit high strung. I don't agree with the tone, but all the poster said was that Mario's "move" is bad. How can you not agree? Mario has below average "pass-rushing-technique." He is a physical monster that needs to be coached up a bit. He isn't there yet. He's a rookie, of course some of his moves are going to suck.

The guy never said Mario sucks, or that we should get rid of him, or used the "bust" word, etc. So why all the crazy defensivenes?

The member said his swim move sucks to high heaven on a thread that is started about an article about Kubiak making changes that was mostly centered around the offense. Your perception of my defensiveness is yours, but not my intent. My intent is to call out a needless scurrilous take that is not germane to the article.

Make sure your fishing license is not expired.

But everytime some of us chime in and say we need to take a RB in the draft next year with our first pick, we get hammered. Even the Coach knows the problem that some of us have known since day 1...

I'm ready to see Chris Taylor get some carries. Maybe see Lundy get back on the field. I agree with the fact that changes need to be made.

It is refreshing to see a coaching staff that is progressive in making changes, and they aren't afraid to admit mistakes. Learning from past successes and failures is a growth attribute, and quite different than the "execute to not lose the game" mentality of the previous staff.

Mario is only 21 years of age, he's basically a kid playing against grown men. He kind of reminds me of my dog (on my avatar), he's a pup.

Thread about to jump off the tracks and become a runaway Mario Williams thread. I can feeeeeeeeeel it!

What a great move by a master motivator (Kubiak): Bring everybody together and basically tell them that collectively, as a team, they have along ways to go. Capers PROBABLY would have congratulated them on the inw and then jumped right into his brilliant gameplan which would call for "changing things up a bit," and for "pulling back the pass in favor of running the ball a lot more since this week's foe would be preparing for our aerial attack."

Capers (in my imagination): "We're going to fool them and just run off-tackle on 1st & 2nd downs...and then we're really going to trick 'em by throwing the RB dump pass on 3rd and long."

I imagine that this is what a Capers meeting in a similar post-win situation would have looked like.

And then there's Kubiak, who seemingly ripped them a new one and let them know that there were many many things to improve upon. The guys were probably waiting for the meeting to begin, all abuzz with the excitement of hearing their coach congratulate them...perhaps a big smile on Kubiak's face as he proclaimed a free day for the great victory. And then WHAM! "What in the world are you guys doing?"

He's setting them up to never savor the win for very long. He's programming them to be viciously hungry for bigger wins in bigger games.

Gosh dangit I like it!!!!!!!!!!!!

actually if I recall, most of the people comenting on taking a RB in the draft just said it wasnt likely based on the policies of a prior Denver coach. not that it wasnt needed. others said it was a need but our secondary was a bigger need. I tend to agree on both counts. I do think we should take the best player available though since we are in need of talent, not potential. If a great RB is there in round 1 but not many DB's available I would take the best DB. But if we get lucky and there are alot of DB's this year I would take a RB first and trade up for the DB. 3rd round prolly LB or offensive Lineman.

Honestly though, I would like to see how the team matures by the end of the season, we may have better players than we think. Time will tell

It doesn't get any easier with the Dallas, Jags and Colts coming up, but I like the attitude of this team to come out fired up.

If Kubiak takes a runningback in an early round in '07, would that appear that Kubiak is saying he made a mistake??

Do you think Kubiak will admit making a mistake like that??

Do you think all the people crying about us needing a Running back now are just upset we didn't take Reggie in '06, and without saying it, they are saying it.

Forcing teams to bring a saftey into the box?!?! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it...However, Andre and Eric would be too much of a threat with just one saftey.

Teams will never be that stupid...Maybe this new fullback will help, but we can't deny that we are lacking in talent at RB.

I like the way Kubiak critiqed himself as well as the players...That has to be good for the *team* mentality.
