Default Departed Williams owes Miami $8.6 million

Associated Press
MIAMI -- Former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams was ordered Friday to repay the team more than $8.6 million for breaching his contract when he suddenly quit before training camp.

Arbitrator Richard Bloch ruled Friday that Williams must repay $8,616,353 in bonus money under the contract he left behind when he shocked the Dolphins and their fans with his sudden retirement last month. The contract ran through 2007.

Ricky Williams files for bankruptcy in 5...4...3...2....

As they pointed out on Inside the NFL last night, Ricky doesn't have that kinda cash laying around, and even if Ricky files for Chapter xx, the Fins still can't take his house under Florida law....must be nice..

Default Ricky Williams could become free agent

Dolphins might get money but lose Ricky

BY JASON COLE AND ARMANDO SALGUERO

jcole@herald.com

The Dolphins might win the right to collect $8.6 million from retired running back Ricky Williams, but lose the rights to him in the process.

A Miami bankruptcy attorney and a former agent both said Thursday that if Williams were to file bankruptcy he could become a free agent, and the Dolphins could end up with nothing from Williams but a small percentage of the $8.6 million the Dolphins are seeking. Miami would be unable to keep him on the team or even trade him in the future

Not sure how someone can mess their life up this much.. have it all and just throw it away. What a crock.
Someday, if and when the cobwebs clear, he will be kicking himself mighty hard.

I don't know thatmuch about the NFL Salary Cap rules.
If a player retires, does the player's salary (for the remainder of the contract) still count against the cap? If so, are the Dolphons sueing for additional cap space? Or are they just collecting on a bad investment?

Ya know, I kind of hope ole Ricky winds up washing dishes somewhere. Then he could be a reverse role model for the kids.

If it's true about him being a free agent if he files for bankruptcy perhaps that was part of his plan all along? It's possible and even if he does file for bankruptcy and comes back next year or in a few years he'll still get crazy amounts of money from another team. Anyway he never seemed like the guy who cared about stuff like that, he's one of those guys who could be homeless and probably still happy.

My advice to Ricky. Stop smoking and start selling. Go see Nate Newton, I hear he's in the wholesale bidnezz.
