Arrow My Keys to victory: vs. Miami

The Miami Doplhins will travel to our house, Reliant Stadium this upcoming Sunday to battle our Houston Texans.

Both teams have struggled some this year, the Dolphins are 1-2 and we have a record of 0-3. Miami does have some momentum on their shoulders however, coming off a win last week. I expect a physical, well-fought football game.

The following are what I feel our Texans must do in order to have success and pull out the W Sunday against the Miami Dolphins...

-Establish a run game. This remains my top priority for this team. Running the football is so key in this offense. We have 3 great backs on our team, in Dayne, Gado and Lundy. Each of them are very capable of having success. I think we seen some nice runs from Dayne last week, but once we got down we tended to get away from the run. Gado can get some touches this week and can be productive as well. Again, running the ball is key with this offense as it can really open up the downfield passing game. This also allows us to control clock, which would be crutial for us to have control of the game. I really look for us to have a successful running game Sunday.

-Pressure Daunte Culpepper. We did a very poor job last week of getting pressure on Brunnell, as we really did not even attempt to blitz him that much. That could have been why he completed 22 straight passes. Culpepper has been sacked quite alot these first three games this year, behind an offensive line in Miami that is still sort of learning. I think this is the perfect oppurtunity for us to have a successful blitzing day, and if we get some sacks it would really get alot of momentum for our defense, get our crowd into it, etc.

-No stupid mistakes. I say this because the last couple games we have made them, espically on offense and it as hurt us. This includes fumbling the snap exchange, jumping on the o-line generating a false start penalty, things like that. These back our offense up, create like 2nd and 15 plays and we cant do anything. If we reduce this carless mistakes it can really take our offense a long way.

I really believe this will be our first Win of this season for our Houston Texans. I sort of said that last week in 'My Keys to the game vs. Washington', but i really feel the team is tired of losing, we are continuing to fight hard, have good practices, etc.

I feel this team has hit perhpas its lowest point of this season, and from here on in will make some pretty nice improvments and win football games. I said before this year even started we could have alot of success this season, and I still feel that way. We have had 3 rough games, and we are going to get better. We have shown that is some spurts already this year, and really the chemistry will start to develop and lead us foward.

If going to Reliant Stadium for this one, cheer us on loud and proud. Be a great Texan fan, despite the first 3 games. We are not even a quarter through the season yet. Whether at the game, watching on the tv, listening to it on the radio, cheer us on!

GO TEXANS!

Nice write-up, but I have to say that this statement stood out. 3 great backs? I don't think so.

I love your write-ups prior to the games. Great job. That being said, I almost fell off my chair from this little tidbit of a quote.

The key for the Texans is the play of both lines, I'm sick & tired seeing our lines dominated. Texans have invested heavily on both sides of the ball so when is the reward gonna arrive? If the Texans can dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides they will win the game, at least within the game

When you're talking about which of two pretty bad teams will win a game, I think what it comes down to is which team will be more fired up. I really believe it's going to be the Texans. The fear of the embarrassment of losing to the crappy Dolphins at home will be enough to light a fire under everyone's butts. The only way this week could be any more favorable to the Texans is if they were playing that dolt Jon Gruden and his joke of a football team.

This is going to be an interesting game…man I wish I could be there in the stadium with everyone.

Culpepper can be pressured into making mistakes. He has slowed down since his injury and even look uncomfortable at times just being in the pocket. This would be the perfect game for Mario Williams to step up in. In fact, I have defended him a lot because of the fact he is a rookie but I also think it would be fair for the team to expect Mario to show them in this game a glimpse of what he is capable of. I don’t expect ten tackles and five sacks but I do believe the conditions for this game (Miami not having a great O-line, Culpepper playing poorly, and Mario being called out by his coach) warrant creating at least a couple of serious disruptions in their backfield.

That being said at this point the team does not have any answer for Ronnie Brown who is equally as good catching the ball out of the back field (we all saw how the inability to defend that hurt the team last week) as he is running it. I don’t know if we have the players at this point to stop him. Our best bet is making this a shoot-out, which would limit Brown’s touches. This brings me to…

Defense. Miami is ranked seventh in the league but that includes two games against Buffalo and Tennessee, which in my opinion are two of the worst offensive teams in the NFL. I think our best bet is the Texan’s passing game. I would love to see the team establishes the run (which admittedly almost every winning team needs to do) but ultimately I think our passing game could have more of an impact on pulling out a victory.

Verdict: I don’t know if we should expect a win (like we should when the Texans play Tennessee and Oakland) but let’s just say I think there is a realistic chance. This is a “swing” game in which the team could pull out an upset. I said before Miami most likely wins this game but if things work out and God loves Houston more than Miami lets go with Houston 27 Miami 17.

Go Texans!

The key to victory is if the Texans defense is catastrophically bad or just normal bad or average or if they actually figure out their deal and play well. If defense wins championships, catastrophically poor performing defenses don't even give you a chance and makes your fanbase flee the stadium. (Can you tell I am a little traumatized?)

The guard play of the Dolphins has been an issue for them, so it will be interesting if the Texans can exploit that or if the Dolphins can work around that.

Both teams are looking to establish the run, and it will be interesting to see if either can do it.

Ultimately, the Dolphins defense has been playing way better than the Texans defense and the Dolphins offense has played statstically similar to the Texans offense. Just from a plain old math perspective, they should smoke us by those terms. But it ain't math, and computers don't play the game, and we just need to show up to see what happens on Sunday.

As an aside, I will be amazed if this isn't the week where David Carr's fat QB rating doesn't become more normalized. (Maybe even if it is because of the defense he faces or just because we might actually more running back TDs).

you're giving miami's defense way too much credit. we stink. we got lucky facing buffalo and tennessee back to back, but even they exposed our weaknesses tenfold. bad secondary, can't get off the field on 3rd downs, old and slow up front...i fully expect carr to have a good game.

Does anyone see Samkon Gado being the starting running back, given that he has done so successfully in the past with the Packers, this year for the Texans or is Ron Dayne really the answer?

I thought Gado looked good in the game against Indy and was surprised he only got one carry against Washington. Gado seems like a much more shifty and break it all the way back than Dayne; and being behind most of the game we could have used a big play over the sled. I hope to see more of Samkon against Miami. The passing game is fine and will only do better with an improved running game.

As far as the defense, we DEFINITELY need to blitz and create some plays since the opposition scores at will if we do not. The defense was much more aggessive in preseason, from what I remember, and it just doesn't seem like the emotional fire is there.

Of course, if we manage to eliminate turnovers, especially on our side of the field and early in the contest, emotions change and we should then see a different confidence translated to inspired defensive play. Turnovers are the key. At home against the struggleing Dolphins, we win the game if we win the turnover battle. Both teams are due, so the edge would have to go to the home team and crowd. Let's hear IT at the game!!

Dayne will start, Gado wll play. How much for each will depend on how they are doing. Based on what Kubes said, it sounds like he is using this to evaulate them both.

It sounds like you are saying this because the analysts say it. There is no possible way the Texans could have established a ground game the past 2 weeks. We were down by a decent margin in both weeks, and needed to pass in order to score. The saying goes "Pass to establish the lead, run the ball to preserve it." Our defense has not given us a chance to establish a run game.[/quote]

I'm not sure what you've been seeing, but I would never label any of those 3 "great" let alone all of them!
Dayne - cut by Denver because he lost his spot to undrafted rookie FA
Gado - demoted to 3rd string in GB after preseason
Lundy - 6th round pick who had great preseason but has shown little in regular season
They all have the potential to do well in this system, but none of them shoul d be considered "great" backs at this point in their Texans career.

For whatever reason, our run blocking has degressed since last year. We need the pass to open up the run. When you have AJ and Moulds as starting WRs, Cook as your starting FB (catching FB, not blockign), and Daniels as your starting TE (catch first TE), you shouldn't be running to open the pass. It should be the other way around. We have a LOT of passing talent on this team, and as a result have sacrificed some of our run blocking. Why not take advantage of this?

I agree, but only halfway. We need pressure, but we also need GOOD TACKLING. You can't get pressure on Brunell when he throws screens and dump offs 90% of the time. You need to stuff those wwith good tackling, and make him sit in the pocket waiting for a route to develop. if you give him the screens, it is 100% impossible to pressure him.

I agree here. You saw what happened last week in NO when the fans got into it. That being said, it isn't the fans fault if we are down by 20 in the 4th and the stadium is silent.

Overall, I like the feel of your post. A lot of optimism. Ultimately, I feel like you are wearing your rose colored glasses and sipping the koolaid, but hey as fans we should be able to be optimistic. Hopefully your keys will hold true!!

Default Re: My Keys to victory: vs. Miami

Some things I think we need to see if we wanna win.

1. CB's playing the receivers tight at the L.O.S. I think this has really hurt us when we played zone. We give a big cushion and get hurt with dink and dunk passes. We need to make Culpepper pass into traffic and not to open receivers on the line.

2. Linebackers need to back up the line, and be out there for the majority of the game. I'm tired of seeing so many nickel and dime packages where we have extra cb's on the field that can't stop the run. It always feels like once the offense get's past the line the personnel out there isn't the right one to bring them down. With Miami having Brown toting the ball I think this is really important for our success. I don't want to see Brown running over McCleon because we were in a nickel package and McCleon isn't gonna have a hope against a back like Brown. At the same time in saying this I don't want Greenwood or Orr basically whatever linebacker we have out there to let the play get by them.

3. Try Symmons at safety next to Earl. I'm sorry, but Brown is killing us by blowing coverage assigments, I guess I wouldn't mind as much if he was used to blitz, but he isn't and it doesn't look like the Texans do much blitzing of the safeties so try out Symmons. It can't hurt, hell he has our only interception so far.

4. No more fumbles or mistakes at the snap. Really, this should go without saying, but the way our guys have performed this should be an emphasis, no more turnovers and no more muffed snaps.

Those are the biggest things I see. Hopefully we'll pull the win out.

GO TEXANS!!!!
