The playboy all-american team is out, and to my disbelief David Pollack is not listed. Not that it is a reputable list of top players, but how can you leave off the best DE award winner for 2 years running? The only reason I point it out is cuz I'm a DAWG fan. Also, in the 2005 draft I see some DAWGS going high: David Greene(QB), David Pollack(DE), Thomas Davis(SS), and Fred Gibson(WR). They are all possible first or second rounders.

Im going to have to keep track of all those guys and see how they turn out at years end.

did david pollack make the all american team last year though? i'm asking cause i don't know. his name doesn't stick out on national tv. one reason is Georgia doesn't have a big market at all. down here we only see them for bcs games. that has alot to do with it. Benson only reason he made it casue of the last 6 games. i'm a die hard horn fan but he better run that way in the next RRS or he's not going 1st round.

That's because that award is given through the media. And just like Tommie Harris (Lombardi winner), Pollack was all hype and no substance last season. Hence him winning the Hendricks.

You apparently didn't watch every Georgia football game like I did. He was awesome. If you are saying this because you looked at his stats and not the games, then you don't understand his impact. The reason his stats were down is because of double-teams. Thats why other players like Robert Geathers (UGA) had good years and got drafted.

Same excuse that was used for Tommie Harris.

Same reasoning for Harris applies to Pollack. ALL of the top defensive linemen garner double-teams. It's the great ones that are able to over come them. Obviously, Harris and Pollack weren't able to do so (or their stats would've been better).

Did Harris and Pollack have an impact? Sure...but so did the other more deserving players that freed up teammates as well as produced on their own.

Darren Sproles is the only running back I've seen recently that can actually be compared to Barry Sanders. If he stays healthy, I think he will be a serious contender for the Heisman. You heard it first.

Does this mean they're better players? No...they just had more productive seasons. Which is what season awards should be based on. But like Tommie Harris, Pollack made a name for himself the year before (in Harris' case it was actually two years ago) and that's what the media went by instead of actually paying attention to what was going on on the field.

There's no question Pollack is an outstanding player (especially in '02 when he registered over 20 TFLs and 14 sacks and rightfully won the Hendricks). I'm just pointing out that post season awards are a joke and shouldn't be used to base a player's ability.

But I'm not a member of the media so what do I know?

Pollack had 92 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 13.5 TFL, 2 INT :hehe: , 9 PD, and 32 QB hurries. That seems productive to me. Udeze had 56 tackles, O INT, and 3 PD. To me that is less productive than Pollack. Dan Cody had 43 tackles, O INT, and O PD. That is less productive than Pollack. Dave Ball had 59 tackles, O INT, 2 PD, and only 4 QB hurries. I don't see any of these statistics as more productive than Pollack. You know what is scary is that Pollacks numbers are worse than his '02 numbers.

What I find interesting is that Georgia's opponents had a total of 880 plays. Yet they had a combined 1,209 total tackles on defense.

So when I look up and see that they had 3 players with more than 100 tackles a piece, I tend to think the Bulldogs register tackles a bit differently (Sean Jones averaged an amazing 10 tackles per game).

By contrast...

USC - 996 plays, 933 total team tackles
OU - 881 plays, 955 total team tackles
UCLA - 900 plays, 943 total team tackles

Quite a difference don't you think?. Unless of course you feel Georgia fielded the best unit of gang tacklers in the history of Div-1A.

But if you feel Udeze was less productive than Pollack based on Pollack's 2 INTs and 9 PDs, let's break down their stats further...

Udeze - 56 total tackles, 26 TFLs (-137 yards), 16.5 sacks (-115 yards), 5 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 blocked kick

Pollack - 92 total tackles, 13.5 TFLs (-67 yards), 7.5 sacks (-54 yards), 1 forced fumble, 0 fumble recoveries

Interestingly enough, USC doesn't list QBHs. Georgia however...131 total QBHs in 421 passing plays. Almost as amazing as their number of total tackles.

They also must have fielded one of the greatest OL ever as their QB only took 8 QBHs on the season (this is from their official website).

And I realize his numbers were better in '02. I thought him winning the Hendricks last year was deserving. But his '02 season is also why I thought he won it this year as well.

Nice post Huge, I agree totally. The Vikings should be much improved in the pass rush dept. As for Pollack he made a wise decision to return to school where he will once again pad his numbers, making a strong case for #1 defensive end in the draft.

Well, it is obvious that I can't persuade Huge to agree that Pollack was the most deserving player. So, with an open mind, would you rather have a DE from the SEC or the PAC-10 all things being equal(size,ability, stats, etc...)?

And Georgia did have the greatest gang tackling team ever. This one play the entire D-line sacked the quarterback, but then he fumbled, and Kentucky's RB picked it up only to be tackled by all three UGA linebackers. At the end of the play Sean Jones came from nowhere and jumped on the dogpile and got credit for a sack and FF.
