From Sporting News exercise phyiologist Brian Baldinger:
"At 6-7, 291, Williams has amazing size for an end. He's smart, and he's hungry. He wants to live up to his draft status. But he'll have a hard time doing so because he isn't a fast-twitch guy." "All the good pass-rushing ends -- Dwight Freeney, Jason Taylor, Michael Strahan, John Abraham and a few others -- are fast-twitch guys. You either have it or you don't, and Williams doesn't." http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=128025 Look, I don't know why these guys want to throw dirt on Mario after one game... but this is getting a little silly. Yes, Freeney, Taylor, and Abraham are quicker than Mario. Mario's not that type of guy, but he's pretty explosive (4.66 40, 40" vertical, 10" broad jump, good 3 cone, average short shuttle) for his size and strength (35 reps). Superfast guys make more immediate impacts too, it's just easier to have immediate success when you can run by guys. Knowing Mario's not that type of guy, judging him so prematurely is ridiculous. I just wonder if Baldinger remembers a guy named Reggie White. Some of the guys Baldinger mentioned could run circles around Reggie White... Reggie ran a 4.6 too, BTW. In Reggie's first two years in the USFL he had 23.5 sacks in 36 games. Everybody needs to chill out... if Mario keeps working he'll be an even more formidable athlete in a few years. I just think it's so funny Mario's being held to the standard of flavor of the week DE's as if they are the only type that have ever had success. |

Typical media. Most of them will bash when things go bad, and tell you how they were one of the only people to support the pick when things go good. It's our job as viewers/consumers to hold them accountable for picking the flavor of the day.

I'd be worried about this, if I was expecting Mario to be a fast twitch "GOOD" pass rusher.... But since we're expecting him to be a "GREAT" pass rusher, like other non-fast twitch guys.... Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Mean Joe Green...... etc.. |

I wonder if this might be the reasoning behind moving Mario on the inside on pass plays? I'm no physiologist but I would assume that Babin and Peek might be "fast twitch" guys which would be useful on the outside while Mario could utilize his size and strength on the inside.

The other thing about Mario is he's a smart guy who is worrying about responsibilities other than just hitting the QB. Give him some time to settle in, figure things out, and you'll see some QBs tasting turf. |

Hahahahahahaha (I'm continuing to laugh inside my head
) This has got to be the MOST rediculous article I've ever read. This guy was an offensive lineman, and now he thinks he's a muscle scientist? Stupid, stupid, stupid. First of all, all humans have both types of fibers in their bodies. Fast twitch fibers are useful for one type of movements, slow twitch for others. To think that Williams doesn't have fast twitch muscle fibers is like saying "Ive never seen him breathe, so clearly he doesn't have lungs" Second of all, while it may be true that certain individuals develop different fibers to different extents, to be able to "Scientifically conclude" that "you either have it or you don't" by watching 1 game is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. 1 GAME. Did he do extensive muscle testing on Williams and the other "fast twitch" guys to cmpare them? Nope. Has he compiled detailed breakdowns of every play Williams has played in, analyzing his net reaction time? Nope. All he did was watch ONE PLAY, where Williams GOT FAKED out by McNabb. It wasn't that he was too slow to react to Westbrook, it was that he was playing like a ROOKIE and got caught on the fake inside. He bit inside, and by the time he realized Westbrook was running outside, was already way behind. OF COURSE he couldn't catch up. I would love to meet this guy. I'd tell him that "reporting skills" are something that "you either have or you don't." The greats all have it, and I"m afraid that you simply don't.

I wonder if Elvin Bethea was a Fast-Twitch guy?
I would be happy if Mario has a career as good or better than Elvin did! None of the coaches have said anything to this effect, but I have been wondering lately " if the coaches are moving Mario around on the line to put him into new learning experiences, so Coach Karm can show him how to handle the various looks and techniques he gets from different offensive linemen." Maybe we won't see the REAL Mario until later in this season. Just a thought! |

Ill compare Mario to Peppers once again and say that Peppers is not one of the leading rushers in the league..but he IS up there. What Peppers does do is make a difference on his defense. He may only be in the top 10-15 in rushing, but he also ties up blockers, forces fumbles, bats down passes, stuffs the run...etc..etc..etc..
We arent looking for a pass rush specialist..we are looking for the total package. In a sense.. we WANT Mario to be a jack of all trades.. that is where he will excel.. but rather than being "good at some, great at none".. we want him to be "great at some, 'omg no way' at none" |

Why do we keep bringing depressing posts to the boards. Do we all like this verbal punishment this much?
Lets let the guy play a full season before we start hounding him and picking him apart, and that especially goes for the "Bush press" and ESPN25. |

I think David Carr should send Mario a really nice gift for taking the heat off of him.
So instead of I hate Carr threads we get I hate Mario threads. Sweet. Anyone else see the irony? The first pick we take a QB and some thought it should have been Peppers, this time we take a DE (compared to Peppers) and pass on the QB. You just can't please people. Thats why I gave up trying.

You are right that the Williams pick has taken the heat off of Carr though... and everybody thought Bush would make Carr's life so much easier. |
