Kendall County furniture store owner and "huge Bears fan" Randy Gonigam got tired of players bragging about their defense, so he decided to put his money where their mouths are. Over Labor Day weekend, Gonigam's World Furniture Mall in Plano offered customers free furniture — up to $10,000 — if the Bears shut out the Green Bay Packers in their season opener. Four quarters, 206 customers and about $300,000 later, Gonigam is still a little shell-shocked. "This is beyond our wildest dreams," he said.
But the fact that it was a long shot didn't keep him from insuring the store for up to $300,000 worth of furniture with a company that specializes in insuring prize reimbursements.

A store in Nebraska had a similar promotion when I was stationed in Offutt and ended up getting burned for it.

Their deal was that if the Cornhuskers won the national championship that year, you'd be reimbursed for the furniture you purchased. At the end of the year ('97, I believe), Nebraska split the national title with Michigan. The store tried backing out of their side of the deal because they said Nebraska didn't finish first in the poll that really mattered (AP poll).

After taking a beating from the public and press for not recognizing their state's home team as the national championships, they reconsidered.

Good thing the guy lived up to his word. Also a good thing he bought insurance.
