Little article on Morency, his problems early in camp with blocking, and his emergence in preseason game #2. I thought it was pretty good.
http://www.houstontexans.com/news/de...xans%20Insider edit: Oh, I forgot. You probably need a subscription to the free content (Texans Insider) to see it. I don't know. Maybe we can post the whole thing here. Beats me.

Which is why if DD doesn't make it back it might be better for the Texans.
At least Lundy held someone versus the DD nonexistant blitz pickups. Missing all practices, and never having the desire to help protect Carr, he should be buried for the first 6 weeks on the PuP list |

Lundy?? We must have watched different games. I just re-watched the game lastnight looking for certain details and Lundy was blind to End's running right by him. When they put Morency in things changed and you saw him cutting anyone who even thought about getting close to Carr. Lundy will pick this up and prove to be the best but right now I think Morency is on top.

FINALLY somone said it. I don't understand the blind loyalty to DD by some on the board. He's slightly above average at running, good at catching/running and that's really it. Well besides being a no blocking, injury waiting to happen. Bring on the new guys!!!

So it takes the guy getting injured and being out for months for some to speak how they really feel about certain players? Maybe I am wrong, but I have always said DD was a good, not a great back. I guess instead of Carr threads I should get ready for the DD threads...

I did watch those games last season. All those sacks that Carr took . . . on plays that DD didn't run out for the dump pass, where his assignment was to stay back and block . . . well, lets' just say I thought his . .ahem. . 'execution' was something that I would regard as going through the motions, even when he was in the right spot, which wasn't very often. Go ahead and slam me, but that's my opinion. |

Morency has learned to run straight ahead and block well under the tutelage of Gary Kubiak and Mike Sherman. DD hasn't had a chance to practice for them yet and be trained. Maybe his blocking would improve as well if he had the same chance to learn. I doubt it would be great or anything, but it might get a lot better. He's been a terrible blocker, yes, but he has been good or great at everything else, so I hate to be too hard on him overall.
Having said that, I still think Morency has probably permanently won the starting job. That's the way it goes. It just shows that the past regime was making some descent picks, but couldn't coach them worth a darn.

What I would like to see is a little more A. Smith just to get a handle on where he is, and see if Morency can duplicate his performance from last week. The past two weeks were to see who came to play and Smith should get some carries for the sake of seeing what he can do w/o anyone messing up on the OL. |

say what? Double D can't pick up the blitz..could have fooled me.
Even if he had a month of camp, got him 100% healty, the guy still is going to be an ole' master bullfighter. I've been screaming that for two years now. Morency is my pick to start. Again, DD would make a great 3rd down back.

About the whole DD average back thing:
Dominic Davis was a very average back, stats-wise, but he was one of the only Texans success stories last year. (Read: not a story of failure.) The idea, IMO, was that the Denver running game would really improve DD's running game. However, he has lost a lot of time and training due to his injury, and this is why Morency is being considered. I think that unless Davis' injury keeps him out the rest of the season/Morency becomes a top-tier back, then DD has a good shot of returning as the Texans starting RB. It may take a few additional weeks of rehab, but he still has a good shot. |

Everyone's bad play, especially the OLs inability to block, is the old coaching regime's fault. Even Seth Wands crappy play was the old regime's fault.
DDs inability to block is his fault. It stems from a lack of desire on his part, and an uncaring attitude toward David Carr. Right....real keen insight there. Lets ditch the one proven offensive piece of production on this team right now and switch to the unproven rookie and the 2nd year veteran with 50 total carries in the NFL.... I hate how people on this board jump from bandwagon to bandwagon and are ready to ditch other players like this was madden, and "attributes" were all that mattered. Sure Lundy is good at running straight ahead, and has done well in the preseason. Sure Morency seemed to block well in his game (he was up against #2 and #3 defenses!! I'm sure a #1 D linebacker, especially on a team other than the Rams, will be able to make Morency look a little more human). This DOES NOT mean that this will translate 100% into the regular season. Why ditch DDavis after 2 preseason games? He is the best offensive weapon we've had on this team, and I for one am not about to give up on him yet. Last edited by gtexan02; 08-23-2006 at 11:41 AM. |

I'd personally like to see Morency up against a 1st string Defense, and one that isn't as porous as the Rams. We know DD can run against 1st string defenses, but can the others? We know Morency can block 2nd and 3rd string pass rushes, but what about 1st string D?
Lets not forget that last year, the Rams ranked 30th in total defense (yards per game) and 28th in rush defense (yard per game). How well do you think their second stringers are? And this was with leonard little sitting out, so assume even worse play from their D-unit |

I think bashing DD is kinda lame but expected. The guy deserves more credit, I do agree that Morency should be they man this year but there is now way as a fan that I am going to ripp on DD. He will get through this tough time, he is still young and has worked very hard to get back. Morency is probably going to get the nodd for this year, and Lundy will earn a paycheck as well. Overall I think what looked like a drama filled offseason at the running back position has turned into a real +.

Well, I would go dig all of the old posts up from the archive but I've stated this view since about week 2 or 3 last year. On one thread I was flamed for calling him soft back then. |
