Default Morency the starter?

Does anyone else see Morency being the starter and having a monster year besides me?

If he continues to play like he did last night, I'm on board. The only thing that might hold him back a little is that Kube will definately get his other RBs some work.

If he gets the start against Denver we will see how good he is. They know how to attack the zone blitz so if anyone is going to stop our run it should be them. So far our passing game is the thing we have had trouble with. I know David has been abused in the pocket in years past, but he needs to relax and trust the guys around him.

I liked Morency last year, and really looked forward to seeing him in action last night. He's responded to Kubiak's mentoring beyond what I'd hoped, and his performance had me thinking "DD who?". Hopefully he can be consistent, because a 1, 2 punch between him and Lundy could be a formula for winning games.

I think that's what makes sense and is the general arguement. Just like Kubiak informed Morency to one cut and go, to trust the line and the blocks - the same can be said what Carr needs to do.

As for the actual post - depends on the outcome of DD who starts, but I'm thinking it'll be more a RBBC system so we're not relying on one RB and drive him into the ground then move onto the next. Seems just like other positions, there will be some rotations to keep the players fresh all game.

I think Morency is going to be the starter. Kubiak has said that we will go to RBBC only if no one steps up. The Broncos are not known for RBBC, the past few years they have had to experiment because someone hasn't stepped up, but before that they have been primarily a single back team.

I am going on the assumption that Davis is not going to play because I don't think he will. I think that Morency will get the bulk of the carries, but Lundy will get his fair share as well. It won't be 50/50 splitting between the two, but probably more like 65/35 or 70/30 depending on how good and consistent Morency is.

Ah, that's what I somewhat meant by the RBBC (maybe mis-spoke the term) - two RB's with a majority of the carries going to one of them. But you put it clearer than I, thanks.

Morency and some of the other guys are looking really good, BUT, I am not quite ready to put Davis out to pasture yet. As well as he did in past years, how much better can he be with the new scheme? His running style seems perfect for the new plan, I am really hoping he gets past the injurys to be able to contribute as one of the rotating backs.

I think Morency will be the starter. He's playing like a running back who is hungry. A guy who needs to put food on the table type mentality. I like it. Actually, i love it.

I can definatly see Morency as a starter. DD has the same problem Lundy did last night blocking LBers. Also, we have not seen DD since his surgery. I doubt he will be as fast and definatly not faster.

This is true about Denver, but Kubiak said last week:

Quote:
"I envision us playing more than one guy," Kubiak said. "We'll play two for sure. We might play three. We'll definitely have a system where we'll rotate so we're not wearing out one guy."
If one of our RBs can pick up the blitz and block consistently, I'd expect him to be a clear cut no. 1. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see a platoon system between Morency, Lunday, and [hopefully] DD.

Scary, but that was EXACTLY what I was about to write in response to the original post. Scary indeed!

I could see Morency having a very good year and Lundy having a pretty good one in support/back up to him if DD isn't able to come back this year. If DD does make it back, IMO he will do really well, but not for long as that knee will get him and after a few games (6???) he will be back recovering and then my previouse statement about Morency will become valid.

Is it possible they may say DD go get it fixed, because Morency and Lundy will suffice? Kubiak seems to be somewhat cautious with injuries and has patience. From what I have read he really likes DD, so I'm beginning to wonder if this opens another option for them.

I think the team will have a distinct "starter" who will get the majority of the carries and who will be identified as "the primary Texans running back". That will almost certainly be Morency IMO with Domanick Davis having to win that job back again if he returns while Morency is getting it done. Unless Lundy just explodes I think that's the way it will work.

RBBC is kind of a loaded term and not what people seem to think it is. Would you call the 1978 Oilers a team that had a RBBC backfield? Probably not but there were 269 running plays that year that didn't go to Earl Campbell and that gained 967 yards during the course of the season. Those were split between Rob Carpenter, Ronnie Coleman, and Tim Wilson. Nobody would suggest that anyone other than Earl was "their running back" that year though.

There will be plenty of carries to go around this season.

Vernand's always shown starter's ability in terms of talent. Now that he clearly has taken to the philoophy of the one-cut system, you get to see that talent in context. What I really like is that he showed very little hesitancy, was quick to the whole (be it after a cut or not) and, just as important, handled his blocking duties well.

If Lundy showed one glaring deficiency in his game last night, it was his pass blocking. Completely whiffed on the one sack of Carr off the outside LB blitz and was called for a really bad hold when he tackled the LB instead of cutting him on the screen pass. Other than that, Lundy did little to make you think he can't bring it on the ground, too.

Yep, my thoughts exactly! And, since Kubes system (based on Denver's) is about establishing the run and possibly running up to 60% or more in a game (unless they fall behind), I would think there would be plenty of carries for 2 or 3 of the backs even if we have 1 main load carrier (ala Earl). I do have to say that at this time, if DD comes back healthy, I still would like to see them split the main load 50/50 at least for awhile. I think this would give DD a better chance of getting through the season. JMHO!

BTW, great example with the 78 Oilers. That was one heck of a team!

I have been saying this since mini camps, it looks like he's gotten over the dancing problems, I think he can/will challenge Domanick for the starting spot if Domanick can somehow come back 100%.
