Default No timetable set for Davis' return

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html

There is a possibility he will miss the entire preseason because of problems with his knee. He had arthroscopic surgery in December after his knee swelled and ached each time he played.

He participated in drills during the first two days of training camp and said he felt good, but soon his knee became sore again, this time because of what doctors said was a bone bruise.

Davis began running again a couple of days ago, but will not travel with the team to St. Louis for Saturday's second preseason game.

If Davis is not healthy enough to play in any of Houston's three remaining preseason games, coach Gary Kubiak isn't sure if he would start him in the opener even if he's fully recovered.

"I don't want to answer that right now," Kubiak said. "I think that would be very hard to do. I think he'd tell you the same thing. I don't know, stranger things have happened. Let's wait and see."

"We're going to be patient," Kubiak said. "We know he can play the game. We just have to know that we're going to get there at some point. We'll keep our fingers crossed, and hopefully it'll work out."

Kubiak said that while he's disappointed that Davis is out, he's not frustrated with the time it is taking him to return.

"You try not to run out of patience because you have situations like that all the time," Kubiak said. "They tend to work themselves out."

I think that if Davis comes back fully healthy, he's not going to be the starting running back. I don't think he's going to start in the opener or play much in any of the first 2-3 games and by that time I think one of the guys we have now is going to have the #1 job locked up.

The quote I didn't like from Kubiak was "We'll keep our fingers crossed, and hopefully it'll work out." That quote sticks out to me for some reason.

With DD being questionable at best, many in the media are trying to make the Texans look stupid for their #1 pick. They seem to be stirring the pot to "make" news. The Texans office and coaching staff are quite comfortable with their bypass of RB and acquisition of Mario. With no DD or RB, the Texans are still left with quite a few good options. With no Mario, the Texans would have been on chronic Imodium.

*****************
Example From ProFootballTalk:

Quote:
The one fact that the organization likely overlooked when deciding between Bush and defensive end Mario Williams is that, even if Williams is the next Reggie White, his performance will never generate the kind of buzz that shows up on the stats sheets and/or SportsCenter. Though we all love to see jarring blindside hits, most quarterback sacks look like any other tackle on any other play.
No, the organization did not "overlook" the production of "buzz" factor.......we'll take those routine boring sacks any time.

Quote:
But then there's the Bush highlight reel, the first installment of which he provided with a 44-yard, field-reversing scamper on Saturday against the Titans. If Bush continues on that track, casual fans everywhere will soon come to the conclusion that the Texans are stoopid.

Of course, the casual fans might be wrong, since at the same time Williams could be averaging 1.3 sacks per game and drawing double teams and setting the stage for interceptions and otherwise helping a so-so defense get a lot better. But none of that stuff can be condensed or explained in a 10-second sound bite, so the casual fan will never realize that Williams is every bit as spectacular, in his own way, as Bush.

It's an unfortunate reality in this situation, and we wonder whether the Texans really thought this aspect of it through when choosing not to pounce on Bush.
.........and the answer? ..........YES THEY DID!.........leaving NFL DEFENSES to be the ones pouncing on Bush.

So we should run our team like our government is run...by sound bites and buzz factor and not what's best for the team? Sounds like the media are mad at us for this because they have to go to N.O. to cover the "BUZZ". Guess I can't blame them there. Dang...the quotes I was wanting didn't make it. I HATE that!!!!

If I know one thing I know this...If the Texans are not going to guarantee 21 mil to Bush it doesn't mean they weren't aware of Dom's knee issues. The Texans have been wary of Dom's knee for a while and you can see behaviors that point to this. They tried to trade up for a back but the Panthers were happy DeAngelo Williams fell in their laps. They were also rumored looking for a back all off season. I think they feel good enough about about the young guys to not panic and pursue a back down the road if the position remains unresolved as this thing goes forward.

As easy as it is to get a back for a second round draft choice I think the Texans thought Bush wasn't worth it. After watching Lundy look like Droughns/Anderson/fill in the blank Denver back, perhaps they knew what they were doing. I donno yet...we get to see though. That's part of the fun of this fan thing to me.

I posted an article in the NFL forum about Atlanta being contacted by four teams who are interested in trading for TJ Duckett, I am just curious if we are one of those teams. Especially since TJ is familiar with the zone blocking scheme and is still pretty young. Supposedly Atlanta is wanting someone who can come in and be their #3 WR.

teams turn 4th round pick running backs into producers more that one would think, the days of the high dollar top pick running back are over I think. even next year i can see us taking another defensive player in the first 3 rounds, at least 2 out of the first 3.

And you really wonder if the Texans front office didn't really think that one through, in all those months of evaluations leading up to the draft?

Sounds to me like someone is not getting it.

I think it was Marshall Faulk who said it best on NFL Network the other night (paraphrased):

"The Texans have a sixth round guy who had more yards than Bush and a TD on three more carries. And he's costing them about fifty million less."

Yes, the jury's still out on Mario. Big friggin deal. Eleven plays isn't a basis to judge anybody; we've already pointed out stats and relevant comparisons by the dozens to provide context for this fact.

The reasons for not signing Bush were various and have been highlighted ad nauseum by now.

Seriously. Let Bush go already.

Default 50 million

i cant believe how often people refer to how much money reggie bush is getting its like they think we got mario at a discount. mario williams was the number one pick in the draft and hes being paid like it. his contract is bigger than bush and youngs so lets not make excuses for him or say atleast we didnt pay 50million for a rb when we paid 56million for a DE

Running backs have 11 guys trying to hit them on every play...they have a much shorter shelf life than most other players....hence the philosophy of not guaranteeing huge money in a position that may end up KaJana Carter'd. Why do you think nobody wanted to give a 2nd round pick for Shaun Alexander and his big salary? How come Edge was tough to trade with his big salary? Quality backs are just too easy to get with a second rounder and every year you can find a back if you just pay for one....you can't find an elite DE that easy. That's kind of the thinking behind this move.

The only difference is that 50M for a good DE is not crazy. Reggie is the highest paid RB in the league and has less than 10 touches under his belt.

It's not just that...just look around the league. Once Portis had the huge cap hit Denver traded him. Proven superstar backs like Edge & Alexander had no interest in their big salaries...because they are backs, and backs are easier to replace than most other position players.

I agree. Look at the franchise tag numbers in the link that I provided, RB's have the 6th highest tag number on the team.

According to the NFLPA, a player's average career is 3.5 years...............running backs shorter and linemen much longer.
