I hate the NFL - Houston Texans Message Board & Forum

I thought the title might get your attention

Anyway, I love football, but I hate the way the NFL handles its business dealings. I know they are the most successful sports ever, but last night I realized just how they make their money--by screwing the consumer.

1) Sell exlusive rights of NFL player names to EA Sports, effectively killing the NFL 2k series in the process, and driving up the cost of Madden games

2) Switch Monday night football to ESPN, so you HAVE to purchase cable to see the games

3) Only way to watch non-market games is with Direct TV and Sunday Ticket, which are both expensive. I am unable to get direct TV where I live, and thus its impossible for me to watch a single Texans game this year

4) Only way to listen to broadcasts of non-market games on the radio is to pay for "NFL Field Pass." Its only $30, but that is still ridiculous.

MLB allows you to listen to all the games for free, plus you can purchase "mlb.tv" online for like $35 and watch all the games on your computer. Thousands of games! Not the NFL. Nooo, they FORCE you to watch the games they choose if you want to watch anything at all, just to up their tv revenue.

Like I said, I despise the NFL and its dealings. They are making money at the expense of the consumer, and while it may be good for the players and the owners, I still don't have to like it.

Wow, were do you live that you get such crap service. DirectTV is not very expensive, Sunday Ticket is a bit though. Most places now you can get the very basic cable for free unless you live in the country. Tough break for you, keep coming to the boards we will keep you informed.

VERY basic cable won't get you ESPN. Getting "enough" cable for ESPN will probably run you at least $30-40 a month.

My understanding is going with ESPN on Monday was more the network's decision. I think ABC and ESPN are both owned by the same group (I want to say Disney) and they wanted the game on ESPN.

I think someone else did the same thing with MLB so EA couldn't have their MLB franchise this season. Basically it comes down to money. If someone wants to pay for exclusive rights it's going to happen. It's not great for us, but it's the way this world works.

Its not that I can't get Direct TV in this area, its that the apartment that I live in provides premium cable as part of the monthly rent fee. To make matters worse, it's against the lease to post a satellite dish anywhere outside your unit. So, basically its unavailable to me.

You dont have to get field pass to listen to games. I listened to several over the net from the Ticket in San Antonio. Mind you that was last season.....

Getting someone outside the state of Texas to play a Texans game is like pulling teeth. I've had bar owners laugh at me when I asked if they would do it this season
