Default Deion Branch (Patriots WR) to hold out

Bad, bad move. Especially when Bill Belichek is your coach. Yeah, Branch is being underpaid by NFL standards ($1.05 million this year) and is in the final year of his contract, but I don't think you hold out on a coach like Belichek. I don't know if he'll tolerate it for very long. I don't think he'll hold out long though. Teams can fine players up to $14,000 a day now (previously was $5,000) for holding out. That money probably adds up real quick. If he holds out for 7 days, that's $98,000 which is almost a 1/10th of his salary. I think he'll be back in camp within a day or two.

He's kind of following Richard Seymour's lead from last year. Seymour held out and eventually got a raise, then a huge extension this offseason.

Problem is, Seymour is the best player in the NFL at his position, and Deion Branch is not. He's a very solid WR and has done a lot for the team, but he's looking for Reggie Wayne money and quite honestly he's not Reggie Wayne.

They'll force him to play at some point... he won't get credit for the year if he doesn't play (and hence won't be eligible for free agency). They can then either let him go somewhere else as a FA or franchise him for one more year.

It's hard watching your favorite players go (McGinest, Givens, Law, etc), but as we say in New England, "In Bill We Trust."

Just FYI (not a prediction)--Branch can hold out thru the 1st 10 games and then report as available for the last 6 and still accrue his season. Can't see the Pats franchising him--after all, as you said he is good but not elite and the franchise tag would be about $6.5 mil for a single season when he wants a raise on $1 mil.

True, but if they only pay him what he's due for 2006 (about $1 mil), even if he sits out the first ten games, and then franchise him in '07 at around $6.5, they're getting him for two years at around $3.5 mil a year (even though he'd miss 10 games). To an extent, the labor rules really favor the owners and this is a good example.

I don't think he's sit out 10 games, but you never know.

Pats will never let him go. Wish they would so we can grab him. LOL!
