Default Texans gaining respect

There are alot of threads about the lack of respect towards the Texans, so I wanted point out some positives we've recieved.

I was watchin Sportscenter yesterday, and Mark Schlerith (sp) chose the Texans as on of his three teams in position for a breakout season. Right after that Mark Clayton chose David Carr as one of his three players in position for a breakout season.

Earlier today I was watching a football show on FoxSports Southwest, (Totally Football I think it was called) and the guy there also chose David Carr as his player ready for a big season.

Sorry I can't provide any links or anything, I just saw this stuff on TV. I think alot of media people are taking notice that the TExans have a chance to really compete this year. I think we might even be taking Jacksonville's place as the popular pick for up-and-coming team this season

A few weeks ago Sean Salisbury picked Carr out of all the young guns as the QB he would want to run a team. He also picks the Texans as his surprise team in the AFC possibly pushing towards a playoff spot.

Peter King jumping off the Jaguars bandwagon:
Quote:
1. I picked Seattle back in the spring to make it to the Super Bowl, and I'm not jumping off the bandwagon now.

2. I picked Jacksonville back in the spring to make it to the Super Bowl, and I am jumping off the Jag bandwagon. Something to do with no pass-rush.

Yeah, that writer is calling him an "undersized end" too. This guy probably has no clue he is a linebacker. Gotta luv the national media.

Just saw Peter Kings predictions on the AFC South:

Colts 10-6
Jaguars 8-8
Titans 8-8
Texans 4-12

4-12????????? These people are ridiculous.

They said 4-12 because teams in the NFL dont improve year after year like the Texans are. They think a team is going to go from 4-12 to the Super Bowl and back again. Carolina and Jacksonville making the playoffs in their second seasons ruined it for us because these writers just dont understand what it means to improve year after year.

I am a very big Texan fan, but I have to see it like it is. The Texans haven't proven why people should give them respect or even why they should be thought of as a contender for the playoffs or even a good team in the AFC. Of course I see it as they are a good team, but anything better than .500 is spoiling us as fans. 4-12 is definitely not what I want, and I believe it isn't going to happen...I say 8-8 or 9-7 is about reasonable for the Texans.

To the up-and-coming Texans, a potential wildcard pick for me if Dom Capers wasn't prominently involved. Quick feel-good story: Back in December, 2001, I was covering the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl in Houston (don't ask), which took place the same week when the expansion Texans signed their first handful of free agents. I remember driving on one of the 78 highways in Houston, listening to sports radio as the hosts breathlessly analyzed each signing -- each of whom had roughly a 0.00007-percent chance of making the team -- and thinking to myself, "Man, this city REALLY needed its football team back." Seems like yesterday. Now they have a decent team. Dikembe Mutombo Needless to say, the Rockets will be relying on hand signals this season. (Note: Big year for Houston, between the Super Bowl, the resurgent Astros, Clemens's return, T-Mac and Yao, the All-Star Game, a potential playoff team with the Texans, and the 7,300 Light Rail accidents. And now the Rockets have traded for Dikembe Mutombo, which could lead to the first-ever situation where Yao's translator needs his own translator to figure out what Dikembe is saying. Has any team ever had two translators before? I'm telling you, it's the Year of Houston.)
Looks like the Texans are even getting a little respect from the not so well know writers.

Well whatever anyone has said up until this point is now mute. The time has come to show people what we are really about. We are now 3 days away from showing the world what we already know. The Texans Rule!!!!

I don't pay much attention to any supposed "lack of respect" from the media outlets (be they print, broadcast, or online) because I think for the most part they've been pretty fair. What have we been in our first two years? 4-12 and 5-11 is what we've been.

We've let a bunch of 4th quarter leads get away from us.
We've set the single season sack record while having our young quarterback pummeled half to death.
We've spent our first expansion draft pick on a LT who never played a down for us.
We've set an improbable record for the least number of yards produced in a victory.
We've lost the only game in 2002 we were favored to win to the lowly Bengals no less.

Now, before you guys get out the rope and start looking for a tree understand that we've done a lot of good things to build on and nobody expected an expansion team to light up the league in it's first two seasons. I know that. You know that. We've watched them closer than any of the media mouthpieces who give out this "respect". They're watching the teams that are winning. They're watching the teams that are going to the playoffs. They're interested in the teams that have record setting players, coaches who've won Super Bowls, and stuff like that.

Half the reason that every year some team comes out of nowhere to grab their attention is that teams can rise quickly in this era. The other half of the reason this happens is that they're ignoring a large chunk of the sub .500 clubs every year.

So having said that I don't care about their respect. It's only going to come when we win and we're going to win so it'll be there. It won't be worth much then to me but it'll be there. We break .500 and the respect will come. Those are the rules under which this "respect" is given out. Until we deliver we don't get any.

It's funny because we bash all the writers for not showing the Texans respect. Then when the Texans get good, and all the writers are on the bandwagon, we will still bash them for being bandwagon jumpers and not paying attention to us before. It's great being a fan.

The NFL has always been slower to merit respect. If someone has 1 big year, they don't always make a probowl... like LT.

unfortuneately with the way teams get better so quickly....

Didn't cleveland make the playoffs their 3rd year?

I'm not bashing them for it. I'm just pointing out that this is what their job is all about. Getting you to buy the magazine to read the articles, getting you to come to the website or tune into the show. They write about the teams that are streaking, winning, advancing, what have you and the other teams are not going to get the coverage or the attention that the playoff teams get. Their jumping on the bandwagon after not being overwhelming in voicing the merits of the Texans isn't an insult. It's an expected outcome. It fits their pattern. You just have to win long enough to get their collective attention.

Frankly I'm impressed that the Texans get as much attention as they do nationwide.
