Default jerome mathis a defensive back

i was just thinking since we are loaded at wide reciever...you think the texans could possibly try and make mathis try the transition from wr to cb or even s???

Probably not a safety. i could maybe see him as a cb. i doubt it'll happen, though.

I was thinking the same thing...(meaning he could be a DB)

He has the speed to compete with other recievers. He could turn out to be a Deion Sanders or something. Who knows..

Yeah and let's put Domanick at linebacker. Mathis is too fragile to play defense.

He doesn't even have the work ethic to develop his skills at his current position. I don't see him putting in the time to learn a new one.

Exactly, DB is a skill position that takes years of development. There is a lot more that goes into it than just speed.

Even though he is fast he would probably get burned by much slower receivers.

Exactly.........A wide receiver gets his packaged "program" (route) handed to him in the huddle. The DB doesn't get a copy of the "program,"
yet is expected to anticipate the most likely alternatives (brains), immediately adjust to whatever is handed to him (reflex and quickness), and overtake (speed) and tackle (correct angles and strength and technique) the ball handler. Mathis is the furthest thing from having the defining qualities of a good DB. Without a change in attitude and work ethic, he will be fortunate to hang on to the limited assignment (injuries aside) he now enjoys.

DB's need special skills like great hips to turn and run quickly while in a backpeddle (not everyone can do this), and they also need to sprint....backwards. Not everyone can do this well either. Mathis has great straight away speed...but you need much more than that to play CB.

This off-season is way way way too long.

Default Db ?

The old saying holds true here, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Mathis is a ProBowl return man, with another year under his belt he could be a Billy White Shoes.
If the front seven does more than just wave at the QB's this year our DB's and safties will do a good job. Robinson was better then Glen and he is now the man you don't throw against if you don't have to.

Billy Johnson was a great punt returner because he had rubber legs. He wasn't a speed demon and not as good a kick returner. Mathis is the opposite. He is a better kick returner than Punt returner since he has great straight away speed....although he is a little wooden when it comes to moves (not so good for punt returners).

I think he'd be a good Defensive linemen, probably a backup of Mario Williams if he gets injured, other than that he must stay where he's at.

Believe it or not DB is position that is much more instinctive/based on athleticism than WR. It would be a much easier switch to go from WR to CB. Someone hit the nail on the head when they said WR has a copy of the 'program' and is based a lot on routes and smarts. All WR's have to work very hard to be great in the NFL....on the flip side CB's play the game and react with their athleticism....instinctively. The idea isn't ridiculous....probably will never happen....but it makes much more sense than asking a NFL CB to switch to WR. Anyways all this Mathis is uncoachable and resistent is based on ONE sole quote from an article saying he wasn't getting along with the new coach. Big deal....people act like he has made the news for his insubordinance. Like i said before....
Quote:
Everyone talks about all this hating Mathis and his cocky, poor attitude....but I have only seen one article talking about some problems he was having with the new WR coach, Shanahan. Some actual links to all this cocky behavior and extreme bad attitude would be much appreciated. And the motorcycle one says nothing about being cocky or having a bad attitude....more than it says he made a foolish mistake that many players have made, I guarantee he isn't the only one riding around on a motorcycle occasionally in the offseasons (apparently he just wasn't too good at it), just be glad he isn't involved in the 800 other problems for players in the first 3 years - like drugs, girls, fights, and just immature criminal activity that unfortunately sometimes comes with the jump from unknown to star. But yeah....several credible links from different sources and situations to all this cocky bad attitude would be great. Not just the hear-say that gets magnified on this board becuase one person offers an opinion or assumption as if it were a fact and then posters take it as the truth accidently and run with it....

Your joking right? Have you ever played Cornerback or Wide Reciever? They are MAJORLY diffrent. Wide Reciever you focus on one thing at a time like...Set up, Run Route Perfectly, Cut perfectly in route, then focus on the ball while sombody tries to knock it away from you or is about to knock the **** outta you... While being a Cornerback, you gotta backpedal, turn around in the backpedal at the right time(if you fail this your gonna get burnt), follow the wide reciever, and find out somhow when and where the ball is going...then after all that if he catches it you gotta bring some dude who is running 300 miles per hour down with a tackle.

Two totally diffrent positions, Don't let Chad Johnson playing Cornerback in the Pro Bowl fool you. Or Will Blackmon playing Cornerback/Wide Reciever in College make you think its easy.
