King, who did not play in the NFL last season, joined the Detroit Lions in March and was released on Wednesday. He will try to make the Colts as Peyton Manning's backup.

"We just think Shaun will add to our quarterback situation," said Dungy, now the Colts' coach. "He's an experienced guy who has played in a lot of big games and won. I think he's going to be a good fit for our system and what we do."

King, a second-round draft choice by Tampa Bay in 1999, has started 24 of 34 career games and has passed for 4,566 yards and 27 touchdowns.

"Both years he started for us (in Tampa Bay), we went to the playoffs and he was a big reason why," Dungy said.

Guy cannot even get a spot on the Lions roster and yet he is a big reason why the Bucs made it to the playoffs and is "good" fit for the Colts after he got tossed from the Cardinals.

what's the problem here? they needed a cheap experienced backup QB, and there aren't too many out there. dungy knows him well. he's a 3rd-stringer, sheesh.

3rd stringer? Jim Sorgi isn't a lock for back-up.

2nd stringer, 3rd stringer, 11th stringer....regardless they won't touch the field till the 4th quarter every few weeks.

Yes that is certainly the question. Problem often be something of a relativistic term; what is a problem for one is not always for another. So in that sense there is no problem of what is the problem, but a problem of where is the problem.

Now on the issue of relativity:

Either coaches say things all the time that they don't mean or believe?
or
Coaches make mistakes.

So now we have to ask ourselves:

Is the coach still saying things that he still does not mean or believe?
or
Is the coach still making the same mistake he made seven years ago?

The dude couldn't get playing time in Arizona, Tampa, or Detroit?
( although, that of course, could just as well reflect on the nature of those three teams as much as Shaun King )

The only problem I see is that Manning could get hurt and then a win over the Colts will be totally ruined because Dungy inserted King into the starting line up. Starting because he was the obviously "big reason" they made it to the playoffs. ( which I will translate for you, a big reason we only made it to the playoffs )

the fact that you're using a signing of a cheap veteran backup QB as a mark against dungy proves that you CLEARLY have something against him. the coach knows him, so king should know how things work in camp, so he should have a step-up on other potential veteran signees.

and what do you mean he couldn't get playing time in tampa? he finished his rookie season very strong taking the team to the championship game, and started the entire following season. he's not starting material though, he's a backup, which is why he was brought in.

if you're going to use the signing of washed-up vets as a mark against dungy, then you sure as hell can't use gruden as an example as to who is better.

He only played because of Dungy. He's not even worth it as a back up, if he was then Detroit would have kept him. What you don't think they need a backup?

I see also... you are thinking King took the team to the Championship game? Come on man... you need to stop sipping on that coconut so hard.
They only made it to the championship game because they had King on the roster instead of somebody at least half worth it. They could have gotten Marino out of retirement and just sat him back there to win a Super Bowl with that defense ( that sniffSamWychecough drafted ).
