The Tennessee Titans are exploring their options. Or, more specifically, the option.

Since the NFL draft wrapped up, the Titans have begun studying various option formations, with the intent of making some a limited part of their playbook this season for their first-round pick, Vince Young.

Hey. at least Vince has a couple of old UT team mates he can throw to and look for help-- Sloan Thomas and Bo Scaiffe.

Yeah I just saw this... I actually hope they do run it. It'll end a 20 year debate about whether or not the option would work in the modern NFL. The counter argument I hear the most is that turnovers are not worth the risk on a lateral pitch and that even 3rd string NFL players are too good and quick to bite on the option. I guess that same quickness would make a shovel pass option just as risky.

Plus the occasional "the QB is to valuable to risk getting hurt running" argument.

I think the play action bootleg is the NFL version of the option
( although I think pass or run is determined before the snap most of the time )

much like the NFL is thinking of changing the numbering system for reggie bush, rumors are that the league is trying to make the forward pass illegal for young. sad how these rookies take over the league.

Yikes, I know. I really hope the Titans do not run the option. My fear is if they run it Vince will get injured/banged up often and it will shorten his career. This would be bad for the Texans. If he stays healthy his whole career he likely will turn out to be a mediocre to poor NFL QB for a decade or so. But if his career is cut short by injuries, the Titans might stumble onto a really good QB to replace him.

I'm sure opinions will vary, but IMHO, this makes a lot more sense than trying to have Michael Vick run a version of the West Coast offense.

While that is true, it still doesn't make it smart for them to run the option.

I guess my take is simply that if you're going to pick a guy like Young, you should use his talents to their fullest instead of trying to jam a square peg into a round hole.

My defensive option is to hit the QB. Always hit the QB. Even if he pitches it off, hit him. Let's see if the 2nd stringer can run it. Oh and especially if it is your division foe, you really hit the QB. They will score but you make sure that they think again about running that option.

This usually causes the QB to pitch early or the coach to stay away from it.

That's a good point. Theres no way the QB will be protected by the refs then. I bet the Titans try it once during preseason just for fun. If not, I would be licking my chops if I was a linebacker.

Dramatically increasing the exposure of your 'franchise' QB's knees to helmets mounted on the tips of 250 lb missiles is not smart. This isn't the Big 12 anymore.

That is exactly what Rob Woodson on NFL Total Access said everyone would do. He said they would put the hurt on him and keep puting the hurt on him and pretty quickly the coaches would see it isn't what you want to do with your QB. The minute he starts runing with the ball, he is a target and they will rough him up.

watch the 2001 rose bowl between miami and nebraska to see how well the option works against what is as close to a pro defense that you'll find in college football. nebraska was completely shutdown. too much speed and size.

This will be goal line/short yardage situational use only; just another way to make the defense think instead of react. I'm sure they hope that this will help build Young's confidence, but it won't be a staple of the offense...

I hope not on the goaline, they better do it out in the open field, do you know how many guys have there ears pinned back on the goaline.
I am not saying it will not work a couple times but someone like I said could get blasted.
