Default No secondary in the draft, what does that mean?

So with us passing on a S or a CB (since we got a B+ I'm glad we passed on a Safety or Corner)

Does that mean that Glenn Earl our SS
And C.C Brown our FS?

Our should the texan fans be expecting a decent S in FA.

I mentioned the same thing after the draft in another column.

My thoughts are they will keep an eye on the waiver wire and will be checking out alot of undrafted talent. The only decent guy on the market at the moment is Ty Law which the patriots are working ahrd to re-sign. I look for the texans to pick up some mroe undrafted types and mix that with looking at the June 1st player cuts by teams to pick up depth in the secondary and we should be ok. I dont see us spending much in FA before camp starts unless a solid DB or Safety gets cut due to salary on June 1st. Like you I still feel we need to add depth at both those positions, but we can field a team at this point. We obviously still have places we can improve on the team, but by and large think the team is set to go to camp at this point and look for the secondary to get some major work in the off-season/draft next year.

Default Interesting article.

Kubiak has publicly stated that he believes our secondary is a relative strength on the team.

BTW, check out this fabu article about how BPA is a little overated and how you have to look at the composition of your team to know what makes sense draftwise.

Footballoutsiders: Draft Position

Here how it is somewhat relevant to your post.

Quote:
At defensive end and cornerback you pretty much get what you pay for. The elite players are usually gone by the end of round two, but there are plenty useful players available after that. These positions are somewhat intertwined in that a good pass rush can help mask poor cover guys and vice versa. As a result, most teams tend to spend early picks on either one spot or the other according to their defensive philosophy. Teams that neglect both positions are those that either use a 3-4 alignment where linebackers and safeties provide most of the pressure (like Pittsburgh) or have a defense that routinely gets lit up like a Christmas tree (like Arizona and Green Bay).

Not that I am satisified with the play of secondary, but in terms of draft pick investment the Texans have put more into the secondary than anyother portion of the team. Dunta, P. Buch, Faggins, Brown, Earl are all young enough to improve and represent 6 draft picks.

A BIG part of the problem last year was bad schemes. Obviously Kubiak believes this, evidenced by the fact that we are keeping the majority of players in our two weakest areas last year - o-line & secondary.

But games are always won/lost in the trenches, and I do see the logic in a dominant front diminishing the pressure on the secondary. Maybe if we get away from that soft cover 2 (which seemed like a prevent to me), our players will be better utilized to their strengths.

Worthless factoid of the day.... (I'm a Kelly Jennings fan) ,,, and I was doing some Seahaws reading today:

With Jennings, the Seahawks have used four of their last eight picks in the first and second rounds on defensive backs. With the addition of Peterson at LB, they have a pretty impressive "back seven" all of a sudden.

well if we get more pressure up front than it would make our secondary look and be alot better, i mean when a qb has all day to throw it tends to wear down the D, especially the guys chasing the wrs all around the field.

OK, I will swim against the group think and make an attempt.....

The Top Reasons Why PBuc will Be Better This Year:

1. Contract Year

2. Better defensive scheme for our personnel. Heck, a better offense will keep the defense off the field and more rested.

3. Better Defensive Line and pass rush

4. Contract Year

5. PBuc knows what people think about his matador thing--he brought it up to Gary Kubiak. As much grief that people heap on him, you would have to think that this is something that he would be working on just from a personal pride standpoint.

6. PBuc seemed to be playing better last year right before he got hurt. Coaches said he was just playing more instead of over thinking.

7. Contract Year

8. DB coach is the same. I am guessing he may have been one of the people recommending the pick up last year and still sees something in him. You would think that PBuc isn't a total scrub and malcontent and uncoachable if he is being kept around. (or maybe it is that he is cheap).

9. Part of the ugliness about PBuc is the way the trade happened. That wasn't any fault of his. If you divorce your feelings for him from what we had to give up to get him, and just judge him as a player, maybe he will be alright. He played poorly at the beginning of the season (like most of the team against good competition), and started getting better and then got hurt. Very few people could live up to the hype of that trade.

10. He must be a pretty good team guy. Uncharacteristically, last year, Bob McNair basically said that the PBuc trade was a mistake and that PBuc was no good. At that point, Buchanon could have trashed the team publicly (it wouldn't have been hard to do), but didn't. This comment is a bit of a stretch, I know, but I do find it interesting and says something to his character.

11. And so that this list can go to 11.....Contract Year

12. No more Caper's and Fangio's defensive schemes or defensive play calling.

So if Pbuc has an average (not great) year, do the Texans try to resign him at what will probably be a huge increase or let him go? I say bye bye (unless it is a great year) and address corner in 2007.

PBUC had no coaching in Oakland and he had none here under Capers and staff. Personally, I think you should take a wait and see attitude. You might be surprised. That appears to be what Kubiak and company are saying as well.

IMO the real threat to the DB's are depth. I submitt that the loss of D. Rob. to a season ending injury would have more effect on this team than the loss of any other player.
