ESPN slow news day?

Sportscenter ran a brief bit this morning. Askin the question did taking Williams instead of Bush get Casserly fired?

a) it's been a long time coming Sportscenter

b) maybe we LIKE having Mario?

Really. Who thinks that? Does ESPN think McNair, Kubiak, and anyone with say in the organization would let CC pick whomever he wanted? They ALL signed off on it. They all wanted this player. The only person I could see not wanting Mario, is CC.

I think most Texan fans are okay with it now just the media wants to act like the fans are going to kill someone because we didn't take Reggie Bush. It's obvious they are looking for something to talk about, and it's getting old now.

Do these guys honestly believe that Bob McNair would let Casserly take Williams and then fire him because of it? Do they think McNair was out running his horses on draft day? The worst kept secret was that Casserly had already earned his ticket out of town after last year's debacle hence the bringing in of Dan Reeves. Casserly's dismissal yesterday only confirms to me that Charlie had ZERO input in this draft. Besides this draft was very uncharacteristic of Charlie.

If Casserly has a high enough pick he normally always takes "the sure guy", the guy the media is in love with like Desmond Howard, Heath Schuler, Michael Westbrook, David Carr, etc. Once he does this, he normally reaches in the later rounds, occasionally gets lucky (Dom Davis) however more often than not misses. I think Casserly would have taken Bush (the man had a man crush on Bush) and probably would have not have taken some of the quality players we got in later rounds. IMO, this draft was too good to have Charlie's stamp on it.

I think Casserly and McNair made a deal so that he could leave gracefully. McNair probably told him to tote the "company line" until after the draft where he could then "resign" and move on with his career. I am sure the whole "you can blame me" tagline was part of the deal also. I think he made that a little too obvious by over selling it. Any other year (when taking heat) he would have made a comment about how the coach's played into the decision.

Casserly "resigned" because of Jason Babin, Travis Johnson, Bennie Joppru, etc.

I still don't think it is fair to get on CC about Joppru...You can not predict injuries. Also, how do we know the Travis Johnson pick is so bad...We did get an extra pick in this years 3rd, which we used on Eric Winston. Maybe we should withhold our judgments on this pick for another year or two. I mean maybe TJ will turn out to be a stud...It is possible you know...

With those thoughts on the table, he really did screw up the Babin (all lot of that goes toward Capers) and most assuredly the Buchanon trades...

I have to say though.... most of the things CC gets blamed for is rather weak..... but so is what he gets credit for...... Im sure they wanted to change the coaching staff last year.... but honestly.... who could they have gotten? not nearly what weve got now.... not even close....

I was wondering when something like that would pop up. Don't they even check into things, even a little bit? The whole 'Casserly is gonna leave' thing was being reported locally for weeks.

This is the mystery that was CC. What exactly did he do for all of years with the Texans?

If you listen to him, he made all the good picks and the coaches were to blame for everything else. I thought the GM was responsible for the overall functioning of the team? The coaches should have a better feel for the players needed (kind of like managers in the field), but the GM (like a corporate manager) is there to provide over sight and accountability. The coach could come in and request a player, but the GM is supposed to weigh the possible value provided against the expected cost. There was more involved in the Pbuc and Babin deals than just these obtaining two players. These moves cost the Texans other draft opportunites. The deals that CC made with free agents (overpaying along the way) affected other moves that the team could make.

Ultimately, the GM should be responsible for the product on the field and the Texans were horrible at the end of last season. Regardless of how many times Charlie, the media, and some fan reminded us of his "drafting genius", the proof of his failings were on display on the field. I, for one, am very happy to see him go.

I'd read somewhere that Casserly said the only times a GM should leave a team is in December or May. Obviously, with all the work the Texans had regarding hiring a new coaching staff, December was ruled out.

I think Charley has done his job here - good or bad (depending on you pov) - and it's time to move on in his career. He's got the experience to be an NFL exec, and it'll be a good contact for Mr. McNair for many years to come.

ESPN is a network I care less and less about as time goes on...unless it's football season, of course.

As for CC, I am sure a complete meltdown of the team, a 2-14 and scrutiny towards the coaches and players AND the idea that he was looking into the NFL front office had NOTHING to do with his ressignation ...errrr... firing!

Two words: NFL Network.

Currently, it doesn't have a very good programming lineup.

But it's getting beter. AND, they are broadcasting games this year....as well as re-broadcasting games with different angles and perspectives not seen on the original airing of the game.

Heck, I see a day not too far off when the NFL doesn't sell off NFC rights and AFC rights to FOX and CBS (for example) and they just air ALL of the games on Sundays, Sunday nights, Mondays, and Thursdays.

With their yearly improvements in programming, the possibility of them having all the games (and re-broadcasting the games!) I will do the following:

Leave my channel on NFL Network and never need the remote control again. It just stays right there all year long. No need for ESPN. It's already gotten to the point (for me) that I watch less of ESPN than I EVER have because I am on NFL Network so much.

I love God, I love my wife and kids, and then it's pretty much NFL Network right after that.

ESPN is tanking.
