Default 20 yds a game and NO PASS RUSH!

Atlanta and Denver, the two Premier Zone Blocking teams led the NFL in rushing, 2546 yds and 2539 yds respectively. Atlanta average 4.8 yds a carry and Denver 4.7. Houston ranked 15th with 1816 yds, a respectable 4.2 yds per carry with an anemic 437 carries. Keep in mind this was accomplished with Dunn, Duckett and Anderson, Bell & Dayne. All good RBs but are not dynamic.

For arguments sake, assume Houston will be a zone blocking offense. With improvements to the Oline and the new scheme lets say the Texans increase rushing attempts 4 times a game or 64 additional rushes per season. Let's also assume with the new scheme they will increase yds per carry, a more respectable 4.5. Based on these assumptions the Texans would rush for 2254 yds, which would put them 5th in the final 2005 stats. It would also be reasonable to think Davis will benefit from the changes so pencil him in for 1300 yds.

The question is how much is the running game going to improve without the addition of Bush and how much will it improve if you added him?????

Now assume you drafted Reggie Bush and he has a spectular Rookie season and rushes for eye popping 6.0 yds a carry on 270 attempts, 1620 yds. WOW! This however is only 320 yds more than you expect from Davis and equates to only an additional 20 yds per game........ and

YOU STILL HAVE NO PASS RUSH!!!!

HOUSTON, YOU HAVE A PASS RUSH!!!!! and a Top 10 Rushing Team!!!!

Very interesting post, really puts it in perspective. Plus you have to figure with the addition of Moulds, along with AJ ,the defense will have to keep an eye on them all the time, helping our rush offense. Same with the rushing, as much as it will improve, it helps AJ and Moulds THAT much more. You gotta love how it all cycles around.

Add Putzier who can stretch the field as a TE and adds a double TE set.

A fine point you make. More people will realize this little fact after the season ends and we go at least 8-8. Sadly, though, there will always be the short- sighted ones who will never get it.

Very good point. That is info that most people dont know. Also take into account that our premier rusher missed 5 games last season, and we played from behind in most games. If we could get ahead a little more often, 4 extra carries a game isnt much to ask.

Yes, but Bush would actually rush for an extra 200 yds. per game, coming to a gazillion yds. in 2006 and easilly making us #1 in rushing yards. Especially since the only time we wouldn't be handing it to Reggie, we'd be throwing it to Reggie. The defense would never even be on the field, so Reggie would really be the whole team and we wouldn't even need a DE, especially one at #1 in the draft. We just need Reggie and a kicker for all those extra points.

LOL thats funny, if reggie was that good he'd score on the first touch meaning the offense would be on the field for less than 30 seconds. so our defense would ALWAYS be on the field. meaning we'd need a really good #1 pick DE to stop their off. so reggie could get it again.

Reggie could be our DE. He could just jump over the LT and land on the QB.

I think Kubes will be great but it concerns me he didn't think of using Reggie in that capacity : ( How would the other offenses gameplan for that!

You're talking about Mario, man.

Reggie just has to touch people to take them out!

interesting.... But kind of useless IMO. You just can't just start churning out numbers and expect accurate predictions in any way. I have no idea how Bush is going to do compared with Mario.

And there's also the question of weather or not our Oline will really be as good as Denver's or Atlanta's. A lot of people expect that, but I sure don't. Let's be realistic here. Kubiak is not Alex Gibbs. Sherman is not Alex Gibbs. While I'm sure Kubiak has watched Gibbs coach, he simply isn't Alex Gibbs and I honestly don't expect to start having a running game that's as good as Denver's or Atlanta's anytime soon.

The main point seems to be that our D needs much more help than our offense. So Williams would contribute more than having RB would. So yeah, you're right.

Not much of an optimist are you? The negative is diffently prevelant in your outlook. You are right about all these people not being Alex Gibbs. However Gibbs has been gone from Denver for several years and yet the Broncos still manage year in and year out to pump out the rushing yards. I would chalk that up to continuity and good coaching.

Kubiak as the O Coordinator, worked week in and week out with Gibbs for years putting in the rushing game plan. Oline coach John Benton learned the system from Kubiak and Gibbs while he was OC at Colo St. and had a power rushing game. Putzier knows the system well and can instruct as a player/coach. Coach Calhoun and Coach Shanahan are also familiar with the system.

Gibbs first year in Atlanta the Falcons led the league in rushing. No, I do not expect the Texans to lead the lead in rushing this year. Yes I do expect the Texans to improve in their number of rushing attempts, yards per carry and total yards. I do expect the Texans RBs numbers to improve too. I would not be surprised if the Texans were a Top Ten Rushing Team.

I am not sure I would call them Superb. I don't think there were any Pro Bowlers or futures HOFers there. Just athletic guys who work well in the zone blocking system. Atlanta pretty much kept the same guys after Gibbs arrival. Guys who could pull, trap and go quickly to a ZONE AND BLOCK ANYONE IN THAT ZONE.

This guy must be a cousin to the waterboy. I say all we need is Reggie and a holder. He can kick the PAT's also. And maybe they could use a waterboy in case Reggie gets thirsty.
