Default Afraid Of The Spotlight?

I've been absent from these boards since the Draft cuz I wanted to teach all you guys a lesson! Didn't work cuz nobody missed me.

Anyway, I've been trying to make sense of the draft and I've come to the conclusion that The Texans Organization is trying to fly below the radar as much as possible in the upcoming season. They don't want to put too much pressure on Kubiak in his first season.

That just has to be the reason they didn't draft ANY high profile top players. No Vince ...No Bush ...both of those players will be constantly under the microscope all season. In the 2nd round I was thinking either one of the WRs Chad Jackson, or Sinorice Moss ...maybe CB Jimmy Williams ...but they opt for a LB thats virtually unknown.

I actually liked the idea of taking the OL in round 3 but TE Leonard Pope was available and they go and pick a TE in the 4th, as well as the rest of the picks, thats not even gonna make the team.

They go on to pass up players like SS Darnell Bing, FS Ko Simpson, WR Jeremy Bloom, QB Marcus Vick, QB Reggie McNeal, DT Dusty Dvoracek ...all of which are more talented than the guys we picked and also filled needs.

These players that were passed up, with the exception of Dusty, have all had a lot of press lately. I think the Texans are trying to have some sort of "Working Man's" Team that isn't going to garner any type of publicity past whatever press David Carr & Coach Kubiak gets.

My question is ...who wants to watch a bunch of nobodies play football. Its kind of like the Spurs ...they have a great team that gets NO ATTENTION!

Hmm, so your theory is that by making the most controversial decision in modern sports, we are somehow trying to get OUT of the mdias attention? I don't think so. As for your further posts, DeMeco Ryans is definitely not an unknown, and was a highly toughted LB prospect this season. Spencer and Winston provide HUGE OL additions for us, and TE Daniels wasn't drafted to be a pure TE, but more of an H-Back, Chris Cooley type if you heard what the org thought of him.

While I don't agree with the pick (see video in signature) I do think its because Kubiak actually believed Mario Williams was the best player for his team. He knows offense, and knows he can work well with what he has, but is still unsure of his defensive coaching ability, and so wants the best possible defense to work with. None of this radar crap, as the Texans have received WAY more media attention by picking Williams than we would have if we had taken the other two

Seriously this should have been a dead topic days ago.

Tha_Tinman, avoiding this site has probably prevented you from gradually changing your mind. A lot of good arguments have been made in the last week that have most of us feeling a lot better about it. I know that Simpson was one of the passed players that I was upset about passing on too, but I think more and more that Kubiak 1) knows what he's doing, and 2) is not going to be building this team in a way that is easy to predict at all. The zone blocking scheme changes everything, apparently, and he's also sticking with players that have more football instinct and/or the right attituade over physical ability. It takes a little while to understand what he reasons were for each pick. Having said that, he still has to prove that he made the right choices of course.

I'm sick of hearing the names Bing and Simpson. Guys, they were drasticly over-rated, as evident by where they were picked.

Bing, will NOT even play SS for the Raiders. They announced last week that he will be playing linebacker. Still think he could help us at SS? You know the one safety spot where we might even have some depth.

As for Simpson: a) he was passed by several teams, multiple times untill picked by the Bills; and they had a superb draft, right? b) it has been all but confirmed that Simpson did poorly on his Wunderlic and on top of that did extremly poorly during his interveiws.

Bloom is a return specialist and a 4th reciever...I think we've got a Pro-Bowler at that position

Reggie McNeal, his pre-draft talk of wanting to play QB probally put a few teams off. He went mid 4th, I like everybody we drafted better.

Marcus Vick...Dude are you serious about this or is this a gag?

As for Dusty...we're pretty well stacked at DT, and it's not like he didn't have any issues.

Our last 3 picks won't make the team ...but there were players available that could. That's my point. And its not that I don't like Mario Williams ...I think he can help our defense ...I just don't like the idea of spending the 1st pick on him.

I think we're still very weak at WR ...Moulds was an excellent pick up but he's not gonna be around long.
We desperately need a QB ...not just a backup guy ...but someone that can CHALLENGE for the starting position. I think Carr needs to feel some pressure to perform better.

As far as that guy that thinks this was a dead issue ...there were 987 other posts you could have responded to. But thanks for sharing.

Last year, I went to the Texans pre-draft luncheon that Caserly spoke at. It was kinda strange because he was talking about what the Texans look for but couldn't really talk about specific players.

Anyway, one of his points is that some of the players that the media and draftniks hype may not have the skillsets they are looking for in the NFL. That the team's job is to see who's skills will translate well to the next level. (size, speed, ability to learn and be coached). Some of the players you mention may have issues in making the transition.

He said things like yeah, there are some slow wide receivers that have succeeded in the league, but if you specifically went looking for the slow wide receiver that is gonna succeed, then you would be out of a job.

So, I don't think this is some decision to fly under the radar. They are just trying to get the best NFL guys for the team and the schemes.

And as for star power, if we had the football equivalent of the Spurs playing in town, I couldn't be much happier.

Kubiak talked about some of these things at the draft luncheon. He said that he wants competition at every position.

I don't know what sort of team roster you are looking at, but I am thinking that WR is a strength on this team. This is probably not the year you want to be developing a high pick baby receiver. He says he really wants Mathis to be a better receiver this year and wants Moulds to mentor Mathis.

He also said that he believed that Rosenfels has what it takes to be a starter in this league and that he believed that he was the type of guy to push Carr to perform better. A guy who has been in the league for a bit may have a better chance at that versus a rookie draft pick. I will defer to Kubiak's knowledge on this.

He said there is going to be competition at every position. They don't have the video from the draft luncheon up, but some of the same stuff is said in this video:

Lots of good stuff in this. It is worth looking at.

From where we sit, I would be happy with success. We're an expansion team. I don't expect us to get respect, even if we were to make a playoff run in the next few years. Unless we completely dominated the AFC South and made it to the championship for a year or two, lots of people would still say it's just luck and nothing more. It just goes with being a young team.

And I think the Spurs get a lot of respect from other players/teams. They just don't get a lot of media attention because they don't fall into basketball stereotypes.

If Kubiak really believes this, and I have no reason to doubt he does, then I have been seriously over-rating Carr.

Coach Kubiak.....Please say it isn't true.

A team that gets no attention but has won two of the last three championships and has a chance for another would be . The Spurs have more stars than any other team in the NBA.
