BLASPHEMY!!
by Brad Lorkovic

BLASPHEMY!! How dare Houston pass on the hometown hero Vince Young AND the explosive Reggie Bush! What were they thinking, why would they do such a thing? This is the stupidest move since Portland passed on Michael Jordan! Never mind the fact that Portland had Hall Of Fame Clyde Drexler at the time or itís a different sport however. Kind of like people neglect Domanick Davis, Houstonís only 1000 yard rusher to date. The previous statements where how most of the Texan fans reacted this way when hearing the news that Mario Williams, the defensive end out of NC State was pick over Bush and Vince. Calling Houston Texan fans: take a step back and look at what Houston did as a whole. There is much more to Houston skipping the two HOF players in Vince and Bush and drafting Bruce Smith, I mean Mario Williams. Time to hit all you Bush and Vince fanatics with some knowledge as to why Mario Williams will be a fine pick and why Reggie Bush isnít the greatest running back since Barry Sanders.

The first argument for Mario being a good pick is because Mario has just as much versatility as Reggie Bush. However, Mario has usable versatility that can best help Houston. Bush is versatile and can play RB, WR, and RET. He did all very effectively at USC and showed this throughout his career. However, Houston already has a proven 1000 yard rusher in Davis, pro bowlers Eric Moulds and Andre Johnson at receiver, and first year pro bowl Jerome Mathis as our returner. On the other side of the ball, Houston is switching to the 4-3 defense and is severely lacking a pass rush and a stud DE. Over the 4 years Houston has been in the league, they have given up 208 sacks while they have recorded only 115 sacks themselves. Thatís a 93 sack difference in the negative column. Taking a look at Mario and his career, Mario set school records in career stops behind the line of scrimmage (55.5) with 27.5 of those stops in 2005 (another school record). He also set the school record in career sacks with 26.5 sacks in his career, with 13.5 of those coming from his last year in college. Look at all these records, and now consider the fact that he did this in one less year than the previous record holders had. Casserly and the Texans also agreed that he can play all four positions on the D Line which is usable versatility. If he can play all four on the line, how will teams be able to scheme against him? The ability for Mario to move along the line for the best possible line up puts Houston in a ridiculously great situation. It also doesnít hurt that Mario has DT size, LB speed, and OL strength.

Another reason for Houston taking Mario Williams is because he is a huge need for the Texans. Houston had a horrible run defense and a pass defense that was just as bad. Their pass defense ranked 24th while their run defense was ranked lasted in the league. Simply put, our defense was pitiful. A lot of it is thought to of been stemmed from a lack of run defense and a lack of pass rush. Well, Mario at 6'7" 291 and his 35 reps of 225 can help out against the run and his pass rush ability will greatly be appreciated. Like stated earlier, he recorded 26.5 sacks in his 3 year career. Also, Peyton Manning, Vince Young, and Byron Leftwich are now in the AFC South so a pass rush is dire in our case. Manning and Leftwich had QB ratings of 104.1 (best in the league) and 89.3, while Vince Young was the 3rd most effective passer in all of college football. It also doesnít help that he ran a 4.52 at the University of Texasí pro day, and he can run all over defenses. If thatís not enough to convince you of our need for a consistent pass rush, then look at how many sacks their teams gave up over the season. Tennessee was 10th with only 30 sacks given up, Jacksonville gave up 32 and ranked 15th, and Indy gave up the fewest sacks in the league with 20. Looking at all this, what good would another RB give us? As the saying goes, Defense Wins Championships.

One of the last reasons Mario was chosen over Bush was because of money and the demands that come with it. Owner Bob McNair stated he wanted to have the #1 pick signed by the beginning of the draft, and Bush made the mistake of making outrageous demands, leaving the door wide open for Mario. Mario got 6 years, $54 million with $26.5 guaranteed. Bush was rumored to of wanted QB money and about $30 million guaranteed and more than a 10% increase than last yearís #1 pick Alex Smithís contract. With current RB Domanick Davis already tied up at 5 years for $25 million, Bush would make that about 6 years, $80 million combined which isnít really necessary for 2 players on the field. Even after being picked #2 by New Orleans, he still wants a great deal of money near what Mario got. Even though the different positions and premiums put on them may account for a small amount of that money, there is no reason for Bush to make those demands. Bush's contract demands were extreme and part of the reason for him not being picked #1. Good luck signing him Tom Benson; heís your problem now.

After being booed on stage by the typical Jet fans that didnít even boo their own pick, I feel Mario has been sorely disrespected. He got treated unfairly and like Eli Manning who said he would not play for San Diego. Did Mario pull some stunt like this or deserve this treatment? No! He signed an offer that Houston made to him, and I fail to see the problem in that. This was supposed to be his shining moment and he got disrespected. I hope Mario comes to Houston with a big chip on his shoulder just to show everyone why he was the number 1 pick . . .
