When I heard we drafted Mario Williams instead of Reggie Bush my first initial thought was...."Once again good ole Charlie fell for everybody else saying they have Mario real high on their draft board."
I was upset that we weren't getting the most exciting player in the draft in Vince Young and the best RB to come in the draft in Reggie Bush. I thought for sure Bush since no Vince for sure. After spending the weekend trying to figure out why, I am a little more accepting of the pick. Just mad that we were never able to trade down to get this guy and as a result had to draft him over Reggie. After seeing the rest of the draft pan out and hearing how the Texans made every effort available to get Bush though, and him not come to an agreement, I am not so sure I am mad about it anymore. It has appeared evident that Kubiak wants to be able to control the line of scrimmage offensively and defensively. I think we can all agree that we suck in that department over the last four years. This is probably the draft we should've had last year. Bush would be great but for the price I don't think he would be that great especially if Carr can't get the time to throw him the ball. Based on what he did in negotiations I am sure he would be full of himself if he was great and/or the team would not care for him much if he wasn't all he advertised thus splitting up a team that has kept it's cohesiveness. I like the picks we did in the later rounds on the first day. Ryans should go well with Williams. We did nice by getting Winston in the 3rd (and the later 3rd at that) If anything, we created depth which is something this team has lacked. On the second day we did ok with the TE in round 4. I know we were going for David Thomas but NE picked him in the 3rd and this guy seems to be of the same mold. Speaking of mold, Eric Moulds was our 5th rounder so not bad. I don't know of the other guys. I know it is not fancy but you can tell that a team is being built. If anything I don't see us going backwards like last years draft did. I guess this is what it is like to have a real football coach handle things. I'm not going to lie though. Even though I feel okay about the draft. I need to feel better. Can you guys point out anything I missed that could help? |

Great post. This is definitely a building year, and this group of new guys should be good after a season or two in the NFL. I still think we are not going to see much improvement on our record off of last year. The games should be more competitive, though. No blow-outs like last year, where they were the norm.

So if Mario Lawson and McCargo and Tulloch were so hot someone please explain these numbers.........................
As for the Texans' contention that they chose Williams over Bush because their needs were more on the defensive side, consider this: Williams played on a North Carolina State unit that in 2005 statistically ranked as the ACC's third-best defense. Fourth in defense versus the run, fourth in defense against the pass, and No. 3 overall. Among his teammates were a pair of fellow first-round selections, defensive end Manny Lawson (San Francisco) and defensive tackle John McCargo (Buffalo), along with linebacker Stephen Tulloch, who was chosen by Tennessee in the fourth round. And the team's record, despite having four defenders chosen among the top 116 players in the draft, was 7-5 overall and 3-5 in the conference. |

I'm thinking that Chuck Amato is a better recruiter (Salesman) than a Head Coach.

Oh, I just wanted to add that this is why you never root for your team to lose on purpose so that they can get a college player that you covet. You just never know what will happen at draft time.

^yeah, "Bush Bowl", and some Texans fans hoping we would lose on purpose at the time, looks kinda' pathetic in hindsight.
*cough* *cough*Glad I was never on that bandwagon. |

If someone were prediciting that Bush would take us that far in just a few years, I'd question that until he proves himself too.
