Default He's Baaaaaaaaaaaack (Deion)

In the strongest indication yet that he's returning to the NFL, Deion Sanders told James Brown, "I think I will be busy on Sundays" this fall.

Sanders has been working out at his Dallas home to see if he'd be able to end his retirement and come back to join the Baltimore Ravens' secondary.

And in an interview on Sporting News Radio, Brown asked Sanders, "So does this mean your speaking engagements at area churches are going to be picking up considerably in Baltimore?"

"I don't know JB, I think I will be busy on Sundays," Sanders said.

"I am going to be premature and say welcome back home," Brown said.

Sanders (screaming): "JB, let's do it! Let's do it JB!"

Sanders is 37 years old and has been out of the NFL for three years. But the Ravens are interested in having the future Hall of Famer join one of the league's best defenses as a nickelback.

Former NFL receiver Tony Martin has been working out with Sanders and says "Prime Time" looks as good as ever.

"It's been incredible, really. I was really impressed," Martin said. "He could always cover, but to take that layoff like he did and come back, it's like he never lost a step."

If Sanders does play for the Ravens, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan would happily draw up a game plan that would include him in the backfield.

"Adding depth is one thing, but adding quality depth is a whole different thing," Nolan said. "A player like that comes along, we'll do what fits that player. It will allow us to be more aggressive than we already are. A player like that allows you to do just about anything."

Most of the Ravens are excited about the possibility, too.

"Deion brings excitement to the game," linebacker Adalius Thomas said. "I used to watch him as a kid, and now you get a chance to sit down with him and pick his brain. It will be very exciting when he does, uh, if he does come back."

The James Brown Show airs Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. EST on Sporting News Radio.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Deion's trainer was just on ESPN News and said he has been working with Deion for a month and a half. He said Deion will for sure be making his comeback with the Ravens. Deion recently was timed in at 4.38 on grass.

Well I like Deion and I think he's the best but that last year he played with the Skins either he wasn't trying very hard or he lost a step because he was a big bust for them.

I am skeptical that he can make a difference.

He wasn't trying very hard because he didn't like Marty Schottenheimer (spelling?). That was also a reason for his early retirement. As bad as he played, to his standards, he still only gave up 1 TD in his final year with the Skins.

Neither can I. I think the only question mark to Deion now is his durability.

Pfft... actually, I don't think he's gonna make a big difference, especially at his age.

Even when he was playing for the boys, yeah he made some big plays on occasions, but most of the time it appeared he was afraid to tackle.

Deion has always been a poor tackler. He IS afraid to tackle.

Still when he was with the Cowboys he was absolutely a shutdown corner. He just wouldn't tackle. But he didn't have to worry about it much. They hardly ever threw his way.

I find him talented, entertaining and a fun guy to watch. He's just one of those players that you notice and I like that.

I am still skeptical that he will do much though. Maybe I shouldn't underestimate him.

Default Its Official:Sanders to Play

Looks like he will take the nickel role at Baltimore:

Quote:
FOX Sports has learned that Sanders is planning to join the Ravens on Wednesday and make the trip to New York on Thursday to be with his new team for their preseason game against the Giants.

Sanders has been working out in two-a-days with his performance coach Tom Shaw. In these workouts, he's been going up against three receivers, one of whom is former Pro Bowler Tony Martin.

"It's been incredible, really. I was really impressed," Martin told James Brown on Sporting News Radio. "He could always cover, but to take that layoff like he did and come back, it's like he never lost a step."

It's believed Sanders' speed is in the 4.38 range for the 40.

The goal of Sanders' workouts has been to get him ready for the second week of the Ravens' season, which will give Sanders two weeks of prep work with his new team's defense.

I think he will make a pretty darn good nickle back for them. Possibly the best in the league. I don't care much for Neons personal styl, but he darn sure can cover, can't/won't tackle worth a toot, but he can cover.

It'll be interesting. I don't remember him doing all that well in Washington his last season. He will only be slower.

He had a great football career in his 12 years previous, with all the Pro Bowl appearances.. But I bet he will be one and done again after this year.

Deion + Ravens = Comical Football

I'm glad I drafted the Ravens defense/special teams in my FF league. Hopefully they have Deion returning too.

Deion won't have to worry about tackling much. Look at his supporting cast, this is tailor-made for Prime Time. Unless Ray Lewis falls to the Madden curse like in the Bang cartoon. He will take away a passing team's third option. And he will be a factor that coordinators will respect when gameplanning.

If having the best defense in the league as well as a 2000+ yard rusher is "comical football" then i sure wish the Texans would get a couple of tips from them. Just remember where Jamie Sharper came from.

Gary Baxter will be fine. He is recovering from hernia surgery and missed a lot of practice time. He had to wear a stomach brace against the Eagles. Baxter had a good game against the Lion's WRs so there is nothing to worry about. He is one of the best #2 CBs in the league. Deion at 60% is better than any nickelback. He wouldn't come back if he knew he couldn't perform. I find it funny how some people think it's a terrible idea. For the Ravens it's a win/win situation. If he comes back and hasn't lost a step then its a great move for them. If he doesn't play to their standards then they can cut him. No harm done. Deion and his trainer have both confirmed his 4.38 time so speed is not a question. Now they have to see if he is durable enough to last the entire season which I think he is. You may dislike his attitude and his arrogance but make no mistake that the guy is one of the best pure cover corners to ever step on a football field. When he first retired it was premature due to his relationship with the coach and organization (Redskins). In his last year with the Redskins they went from the 30th rank defense to the 4th rank D.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - Deion Sanders is back in the NFL, this time with the Baltimore Ravens.

The seven-time Pro Bowl defensive back passed his physical Tuesday and formally ended his retirement by signing a one-year contract laden with incentives. Sanders will practice with the team for the first time Wednesday, and expects to play in the Ravens' season opener Sept. 12 against the Cleveland Browns.

Sanders, 37, played cornerback in his prime, but will be used as a fifth defensive back in Baltimore.

"This game is not all that complicated. We're going to try to ingrain him as quickly as we can," Ravens coach Brian Billick said Tuesday morning. "We have to make sure we know where he's at physically. He's here plenty early enough to have an impact."

Sanders has not played since the 2000 season, which he spent with the Washington Redskins. He retired on the eve of the team's training camp in 2001, but the Ravens are convinced he's still got enough talent to contribute to their bid to defend the AFC North title and advance to the Super Bowl.

"Based on people we've talked to, opinions we trust, I'm sure there's no question he's going to be able to compete. At the level he competed before? There's very few of us that can do things as well as we did before. At 50, I can attest to that," Billick said. "But what he will bring to the table for us will be substantial."

Sanders' experience will also be invaluable to a defensive unit that will look to him for guidance. During his days with the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys - when he was known as Prime Time - Sanders was one of the best cover cornerbacks in the NFL.

"To have him come here is an honor," Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister said. "There's so much that you can learn from a Deion Sanders; he's the type of guy that can take a young DB and make him grow up mentally, and prepare him for situations he otherwise wouldn't get without having the experience himself."

Said Billick: "What a resource. I can't imagine our younger players or our guys that have not had a lot of playing time aren't going to hang on every word that this guy has to offer."

Sanders will be used sparingly at first, but that will change if he proves to be effective.

"Everybody's made a big deal of his role here. Nickel is a beginning point; you've got to start someplace," Billick said. "But we'll expand it as we deem necessary."

Sanders began his comeback bid after talking with Baltimore middle linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive back Corey Fuller, both of whom he considers close friends.

"This man has everything. He has money, he has rings, he has fame, he has all of that," Lewis said. "But the simple mathematics of it all is he's just coming back to have fun and play football with his friends."

Billick is convinced that the flamboyant Sanders will work within the framework of the team and make the Ravens a better club.

"This is not about the money," Billick said. "This is about a man who has a passion for a game, has a relationship with players who have a part of this, and we're a byproduct of this. We're going to gain from this."

Fuller said, "Deion's got five kids and he's got life in front of him. He's coming back because me and Ray called him."

ESPN.com is reporting the deal is a 1 year deal worth 1.2 million and he could earn another 2 million in incentives...is it me or is that an awful lot of money to pay your 5th DB?
