Default Bush contract demands (per John Clayton)

A friend told me that ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that Reggie Bush is seeking an increase from what last year's top pick, QB Alex Smith, got. This has caused the team to look at Mario Williams for the top pick. Of course, the most likely reason for the Mario glance is negotiating leverage to get Bush to come down just a bit from his price.

I will really be happy when April 29 finally rolls around...

I really wouldn't expect him to ASK for any less. He knows he probaly wont get it. Just dont lowball him on the counter offer & it should all work out.

Isn't this what negotiation is?

Bush asks for a price, McNair counters, and they settle in the middle.

Ya really. Bush isn't going to come and ask for a small contract. Then he would not be getting the best contract and the most money he can get. Usually the two teams agree on a deal, usually in between how much the player and how much the team wants to pay.

Did anyone really expect Bush or any other prospect to sit down and say that they will accept a 6 year $30 million contract with out negotiating at all? The player always wants to get as much money as he can and the team wants to pay as little as they can. It is like any other business. The Texans are the buyers and the prospect is the seller.

Bush probably wants 6 yr 50-55 million with a 25 mill signing bonus

He probably wants that, McNair probably offered $40-45 million, and they will settle somewhere in between that. McNair wants Bush and Bush wants to go to the Texans, they will get it done.

Anyone know of a good web site with the 1st pick contract data over the last decade? It would be interesting to know how often the size of the contract has decreased from one year to the next ....

Bush is considered a lot better player, so therefore he should get a bump bigger than the normal increase the #1 gets from the previous year.

The 6 yr north of $55 million sounds about right. Not sure about that signing bonus though. I think a little more than half of that will be guaranteed.

Default I shutter to think

Yeah but the question begs to be asked ...if an all pro gaurd arguably the best
left gaurd in football can comand fifty million, what's a RB who's supposed to be the next coming of {pick your icon} going to be worth? Mind boggeling. I hope
Uncle McNair had all the nickles rolled up.

When do you think will negotiations (at least those known to the public) will begin?

I think there usually isn't a decrease, something very unusual.

Especially since there is a new CBA with a higher cap, and Bush is considered more valueable than Alex Smith, this contract will be out of sight.

He is a once in a generation back and you have to pay for that.

I wouldn't be surprised if they already have started in some form.

He'll get in the neighborhood of $25 million guaranteed but it won't be all signing bonus. Some will be signing bonus and some will be roster bonuses in future years, so it won't all be payable in '06. That's how Smith's deal was structured.

I read he is talking with Addidas and something like $20 million over 4 years or something. I think he needs to be drafted #1 first so the hype meets with the marketing campaign they want.

A once in a generation back who has not shown the ability to run inside consitently, get the short yardage and be the workhorse. Yes, he has the talent, but he has WAY to many question marks to be considered a sure thing. Alex Smith was a QB, so were the last 6 #1 picks. Reggie should not get more then Alex Smith, simply because of the position he plays and some of the very important question marks around his game.

I say that if Reggie Bush is all he's annointed to be, the Texans should just pay him by the yard.

Seriously, I'd like to see some lofty incentive clauses. Just to see if he can do it.

I think you are right about the QB position vs. RB position. But, take into account all of this hype.

Also, this is best opportunity for Reggie Bush to get a max contract. It is extremely difficult for a running back to get that max contract later in his career even if he is a proven pro bowler. Think about James and Alexander.

It makes sense for him to go for the whole enchilada.
