after all these free agents im just wondering what we still need in the draft. here is my list of needs in order of importance. 1)rt tackle/gaurd 2)free safty 3)#2 wr (if we dont get moulds) 4) cb
other positions that could be upgraded are lb, de. if we could get prospects at those 4 postions. we could have a chance to play well this year and also a chance to evaluate everyone and see what else we might need for next year. maybe this could be a two year turnaround. |

The free agent moves simplify draft day. That isn't to say if they feel they've found a sleeper C, DE or whatever that they pass. But they can go into this draft looking a few positions (mentioned above) and take some good shots at addressing those in the 2nd and 3rd rounds with their 3 picks (which are at the top of those rounds).

with most of our line taken care of and the #2 receiver pos. getting worked on, i say we should look in the defensive backfield for some draftees. Youbouty (who i went to school with!), KO, Slay, Bing, all these guys would be decent guys who could make a good passing game difficult and we could possibly pick up in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I like the idea of Slay in the later rounds. We could use someone besides DRob who isn't scared of laying into someone, make recievers think twice before running an inside route. But, with the way Kubiak has handled things, I'm good with whatever he thinks we need.

Lets assume we add a veteran WR (that can be our #2 for this seasoN) before the draft. The only other FA needs that I could see us addressing between now and the draft would be FS and/or CB (whether it is a DB, NB, or someone to be our #2 CB). If you look at our FA pick-ups, though, some of them are merely stopgap measures. We appear to be filling our immediate needs so we can draft BPA. Positions that could still use a prospect are:
MLB DE WR CB S (Free moreso than strong) OT I think we all assume we are taking Bush with our 1st. I see us using our remaining first day picks on 3 of the above positions. The only positions not listed above that could get consideration IMO are interior linemen.

We need a defense. People on this board like to trumpet that our problems were mostly on D last year as the offense just was given the wrong playbook. Moreover, we had the second to worst defense and the fourth to worst offense. Yet we hired an offensive minded HC and brought in a former HC to coach the line. We extended our QB and have added a TE and C that will most likely start.

We do need defense, but it appears this draft is shaping up to be an offensive one for us. I think the focus will be on defense next year.

They can certainly focus on defense in rounds 2 and 3 and as mentioned above, this will not be their only opportunity to address the defense as they are turning around this franchise.

We still stongly need a CB, or even a couple of CB's. I'm not sold on the Safety spots either.

#1 on my list is FS. We need another playmaker in the backfield, in our division. FS is our biggest hole at this point. We can get by with CC Brown and Earl.. but both of them are more SS than FS.
#2 MLB. Cowart was a great signing for us.. and I think Polk may possible shape up into a good MLB for us.. but I still think we need to draft someone. Cowart may not even make it through the season with his recent rash of injuries, and even if he does..we MAY get 2 seasons out of him before we will SERIOUSLY need a replacement. Get someone now and start grooming. #3 OT. We need an RT. I think we can get by with Wand/Wade..but I also think we will need an upgrade eventually. Colledge in the 3rd. #4. CB. Buchanan and Faggins I think will be alright for next season, if we have to use them. But in our division we really need a strong defensive backfield, so id like to get a legit #2 CB prospect. Marshall is my pick. #5. DE. This can be a 2nd day pick.. but we need to get a more traditional 4-3 DE that can AT LEAST provide depth and some run stuffing. We have a shortage of true 4-3 DEs. |

I'm with beer lover, OT or CB whichever grades out higher. It would be nice to get OT Eric Winston with the 2nd pick and CB DeMario Minter with a third. I would also no be to upset if we got CB Jonathan Joseph with the 2nd and OT Daryn Colledge with a third.

Apparently, a situational running back is our top need.

FWIW, here are a couple articles folks might find interesting on spending on offensive v. defense: USA Today article Quote:
Here's an article on the analysis of the offense/defense spending of last year's Super Bowl teams: Steelers v. Seahawk spending. I am not posting these articles to make a point about this stuff, but rather as more an illustration of the sorts of things teams are doing. |
