Vernon Davis at WR?

Since the draft's a month away & rumors/speculation are running rampant, I thought I'd throw this idea out & see if it gets kicked around a bit.

First off, let me make it clear that I'm in the trade down group & that I'd like us to take D'Brick or Mario with our 1st pick. Obviously, some things have happened in FA that will have a direct impact on us trading down. In other words, if we trade down, we won't get either one of my players of choice.

Now, back to the set up of my original question. If Oakland should step up & make an offer (#7, #38, & either a 2nd or 3rd, next year) for the #1 pick (rumors indicate they're very interested in Leinart, D'Brick, & Mario), & Casserly doesn't decide to be stubborn & ask for the moon, we should be in a very good position to draft Davis.

If we assume that we'll get Putzier to play TE, then why not draft Davis to play WR opposite of AJ? At 6'3" 263lbs & running a 4.38 40, no single CB, or Safety, will be able to bring him down. We'd have one of the best, if not the best, receiving corps in the NFL. With two 2nds & two 3rds, we should be able to adequately address the OL, CB, & LB positions.

2a) Eric Winston (OT), Daryn Colledge (OT), or Jonathan Scott (OT)
2b) Thomas Howard (OLB)
3a) Richard Marshall (CB) or Jonathan Joseph (CB)

Any thoughts, or comments?

Why would we take a back (other than Bush if we stay at one)? We have three serviceable-good young backs on the roster (assuming we re-sign Wells, which I imagine we would in this scenario).

I like the idea of Davis at WR. With a normal TE it would be a weird thing to do, but he ran a 4.38! I think he could make the transition if he wanted to.

Then, why would we take Bush? Contrary to some people's distorted opinions, Bush will not have as big an effect on the Texans as D'Brick & Mario will have.

Why would we take a back in the 4th round? To groom for the future. He has break away speed (4.40), good hands in the passing game, runs up the middle, can get around the corner, has very good vision & instincts, & he's proven to be very durable. He sounds to me like he'll be an upgrade over DD, be cheaper, & he won't cost us the 1st pick in the draft. That's why I'd take him in the 4th, assuming he's still available.

Thats true, but if you can get a TE that fast, then why would you waste his size, physical ability, blocking skills, and stregth. You can get a good #2 WR to compliment Aj but I think that he is too good of a TE to even want to switch to WR.

I like the trade down for Davis idea , He's at the top of my want list for this team .... He is a very versatile player who could line up all over the field and would be a mis-match for just about any defender ....But if im trading down I want a 1+2 this year and next years #1 Not a 2 or 3. If I cant get that I'd stay at #1 and take Bush.

Vernon Davis would be another unique talent that you could play at both WR or TE and could create many matchup problems. I personally would not accept the trade you offered, I don't think we're getting enough in return for that. Also, Eric Winston won't last until the 2nd round, and Jonathan Scott is not worth the #33 pick, Daryn Colledge isn't a great value at #33 but he wouldn't be a bad pick for us there. Jonathan Joseph also won't come close to the 3rd round, he could be off the board in the late 1st round. I also don't like Kevin Boothe at all, he is a little bigger than ideal for a zone blocking OG and is no where near athletic enough to fit our style, Chris Chester would be a great option in either the 3rd or 4th round for us. I don't overly see the point in getting Jerious Norwood, but I wouldn't really have a problem with getting a faster RB like him depending on what else we do in the remainder of free agency and what we can get in the draft.

Good points on that. We are right that we would be better off if drafting him by getting a #3 WR out of free agency or the draft than moving him to WR. I still think that he can play WR if he wanted to or got drafted by a team that wanted him to play WR.
