Default HPF: Second verse, same as first

One might expect major changes on a football team after a 2-14 season, but things seem to move a bit slower here in Houston. Sure, the Texans replaced their ineffective coaching staff in January, but little else seems all that different this offseason from the previous offseasons around Reliant Park.

For example:

• The Texans, owners of the first pick in the draft, have successfully eliminated the pre-draft mystery four months ahead of schedule, same as they did with David Carr in 2002. Reggie Bush’s name is already on the Texans’ notecard, ready for delivery to the podium. I’m just waiting for Reggie Bush to show up in a minor car accident report wearing a Texans cap, same as Carr once did… more than a month before the draft.

• Speaking of Carr, the team’s first order of business for player management this offseason was to reward him with a three-year extension and an $8 million bonus. Makes sense, right? Two wins last season equals $24 million for the next three seasons. You see, it's simple when you break down the math.

So the Texans are obviously followers of trickle down economics. Sign Carr, and the wins will start trickling in… any season now… just you wait. And wait. Carr already has a built-in excuse for further ineptitude this season since it will be his first year under a new coach and offensive system. That means he now has five – count ‘em five! – years of consequence-free (and competition-free) NFL experience. Most lottery winners aren’t this lucky.

• The offensive line was an issue, again, last season. So what’s the offseason plan to fix it? Retain nearly all of last year’s unit and assign blame to everything but the linemen themselves. Maybe this group just needs more time to gel, huh? Learn a new system? Why does that sound so familiar?

• Switching to a 4-3 defensive front, the Texans rushed out to give a $12 million signing bonus to Anthony Weaver, a terrific 3-4 defensive end. Uh, doesn’t this team already have enough 3-4 linemen? They must since they released Gary Walker to eat more than $7 million in dead money on the cap. Yummy!

Ah, but I’ll try to be fair. There have been a couple changes this offseason, like at backup quarterback. The Texans sent Tony Banks packing - who by the way is the only quarterback this franchise has had with a winning record as a starter - to give more than double his signing bonus of a year ago to… drumroll please… Sage Rosenfels!

I guess they think making over the coaching staff is going to fix all our problems.

What separated this article to what we read on here, is there was more than just the Texans *******s and fire Casserly..
Quote:
Don’t remember Rosenfels? He was a castoff of the 2005 Dolphins, perhaps the most quarterback-needy team in recent memory. Rosenfels has just two starts in his career, which is exactly zero more than the Texans’ other more cap-friendly backup quarterback, Dave Ragone.

If that’s got you a bit punch drunk, just chase it down with this thought: Rosenfels is just one heartbeat away from starting this season. Gulp.

I'll give Casserly credit for this though: the Rosenfels signing took the heat off him for giving an eight-digit bonus to Weaver and a $5 million contract to Jameel Cook, a fullback who might not even start if incumbent Moran Norris beats him in camp.

I am like you, I don't like to read articles like this, but truth hurts and the article is right.. our FA pickups have been less than stellar and our drafting esp in 2nd and 3rd rounds (we went boom or bust(hollings) on projects instead of getting solid picks) have really hurt this franchise

Ridiculous. I guess it's Carr's fault the coaching was so horrible for the last 4 seasons. I guess it's Carr's fault that the playcalling was so bad last season. I guess it's Carr's fault for our defense being ranked 31st last season. The answer is clear to me now, the failure of this organization the past 4 seasons lies all on Carr's shoulders.

I think Carr will greatly improve with the new coaching staff.

Honestly, I am not saying he will or will not, all I am saying is with the coaching and players around him the last 4 seasons, I don't think we can fairly judge his play or place the entire blame on him.

I disagree. I think it reads like a typical but "swollen" rant here on the Texans board. The simple truth is that Bob McNair brought in Dan Reeves last season to look everything over and give him a recommendation and the recommendation was that the problem did not lie with the players but rather on the coaching and what the coaches were asking the players to do.

Now you may not believe that and I may not entirely believe that but Bob McNair has clearly stated that he believed it. Since then the Texans have proceeded with free agency in the exact same manner you would expect them to if you take into account that they believed what Reeves said.

None of this is particularly surprising and if Reeves was right then the Texans would get better if they left the entire roster alone (exempting personnel needed for the 3-4 to 4-3 change) and just installed a new offensive and defensive system.

The big thing is that nobody knows squat about the Texans right now. Anyone who thinks they do is fooling themselves or trying to sell newspapers. Until we see these players (and whoever else comes to town via the draft and free agency) in the new system then most criticism like this is fairly pointless.

Agreed. plus i like the fact that he assumes Carr will have a bad year- and can use the fact that its a new system as an excuse (which by the way, he should know everything about, because other qbs never need any time to know exactly how to run a new offence on Day 1 )

yeah our FA's arent big names and we have overpaid but thats what happens when you're the worst team in the league- lets see how they play before judging them.
also agree on weak mid-round drafting in PREVIOUS years- this year we've got kubiak, sherman and reeves to help make selections, yet the jackass that wrote that trash just prefers to assume failure. Again lets wait and see before judgement
As to the Reggie Bush pick- who cares- if thats what they want does it make a difference if every1 assumes we're taking him because we wont be trading down if hes the 1 we want(and was also the general consensus #1 for a long time before-hand)

Well I am going to have to agree that we are drafting Bush. The way the landscape looks if they do sign Putzier we then have a pass catch TE, a pass catching FB, a pass catching RB in DD, a pass catching RB who also plays receiver (Bush), two rather large WR's in AJ and now the new guy from Cinncy. We also have a QB with some wheels so look for several plays added to allow David to run.

This offense appears to be gearing up for short quick passes, West Coast O. Which would explain why O-line was not addressed in FA, the new coaching staff must feel the line that is in place is athletic enough and geared to this type of system. I also see the coaching staff planning on Carr not holding on to the ball that long. Also with all the weapons Carr would have at the line of scrimage it would be hard for the other teams D to call blitz's on every down, unlike what has been going on over the last four years.

So just on a guess, I would think the second round we will draft a Tackle and then in the third round take a pair of DE's and then draft OLB in the fourth and fith rounds and then maybe a CB in the sixth.

That's a really stupid thing to say. Norris can't block as well, or catch passes as well.

If you have not ever been over to HPF it is mostly about ~10 guys who hate Carr, love VY, HATE Caserly and just dog and Bioch about everything and anything the team does. A couple of guys try to keep the keel sort of level, but it's usually a beat down / shoutdown situation if anything positive is said about that/those that they absolutly hate.

that article is crap.

If there is one thing I cant stand..it is people who whine and whine and can only see the bad in things.

Eliminated the pre-draft mystery? We have alluded to many different scenarios and have said A HUNDRED FREAKING TIMES that we are open to a trade down. What else do you want them to do? (I know what you want them to do..you want them to say "OMG WE LOVE VINCE!")

Im not going to get into Carr..its already been gone over 100 times.. but hey, we havent heard this guys particular brand of ignorant sarcasm yet..so im glad he was kind enough to share.

Offensive line? Sherman...remember him? our new Oline coach? How about us moving McKinney to his CORRECT position at LG? how about us retaining Wand so that we can give him the shot that our previous coaching staff denied him for god knows what reason? How about one of the deepest Oline drafts in recent memory? I suppose this guy would have preffered that WE had been the team to make Bentley the highest paid center in NFL history huh? no..then he would have been whining about how we had the #1 pick and had to trade it cause we couldnt afford to sign anyone drafted that high, or whining about how we overpaid for 1 lineman when we need more. Whine whine whine whine whine.. I swear...if people would put half as much effort into thinking things through, as they put into whining and being a sarcastic fool....

Anthony Weaver...again..do some freaking research.

1) Everyone who has been talking about Weaver this offseason has said that he would be more productive in a 4-3

2) No..we DONT have enough 3-4 linemen..at least..we dont have enough that fit the mold for a 4-3 defensive end. We had NO ONE with the right size to be a run stuffer.. and now we do.

As for Sage Rosenfels.. he has been highly thought of and played well when the Dolphins needed him. He is young, and will keep things competitive at QB. I dont really need to bother explaining this though..because anyone who praises the greatness of Tony Banks is showing his ignorance anyway.

Totally worthless article. I stopped reading after the Sage Rosenfels comment.. i just cant absorb that much trash at once. HPF needs to seriously consider what they post on their site.. They just lost a regular visitor.
