Default Dave Thomas???

Anyone took a liking to Thomas coming out of Texas? Although the kid may have to learn to become a better blocking tight end, the kid shows good hands and has decent speed. If placed into the right system and the Texans have a good #2 WR, may be able to catch 35-45 passes. What does anyone thing about a 3rd-5th round pick for him?

If we don't get a TE in FA, or keep the 3 we have,or draft one in the first 4 rounds i could see us looking at him in the 5-7 rounds.

I personally have him as my top TE in the draft. This kid can block, it's just that when you see him on TV he's catching a third down pass by finding the whole in the zone or busting something up the seams which is something we haven't had on this team.

He reminds me of Dallas Clark

You would draft him before V. Davis?

If Pope/Davis are around in the second round, then sure, you take one of them. I don't think they will be, though. I would take Thomas in the second/third round, but I think we have a lot of other pressing needs, too, especially on D.

What have you been smoking? He is going to be a decent H-Back type TE, but the best TE in the draft? I see him in the Dallas Clark/Frank Wycheck mold. Vernon Davis is going to be a top ten selection, and you have a number of others that are going to go ahead of him. Heck, until it all plays out on the field, I can't say your wrong, but looking back 5 years from now, I have a hard time imagining that Dave Thomas is going to be the best TE from this draft.

Vernon Davis doesn't play for UT so I don't know him. I haven't seen him play. I have seen the kid from GA., Marcedes Lewis from UCLA, the kid from USC, and King from Va. Tech. I like them but I've seen more Dave Thomas and have thought about the small things he does like block downfield and he is awesome in the redzone.

I look at the fact that this kid has a running QB and played on a team with an awesome run game and I see how he was still able to put up great #s not just this year but over the past 3. If not for him, Texas would not have moved the ball to be in position to win on that last drive. Look at the tape.

Can you educate me on all that Vernon Davis has done?

He runs a 4.38 40 which is faster then most NFL recievers, and he weighs 263 lbs. He's a freak.

I like David Thomas and I would love it if they can get him with their 4th round pick. I would feel good about the Texans TE situation going into next year with Schobel and D. Thomas.

Vernon Davis Height 6-3 3/4 Weight 263 40- 4.38

Strengths:
An amazing natural athlete with rare ability...Has tremendous speed and can get downfield...A major weapon in the passing game...Has great hands...Runs well after the catch...An outstanding leaper with great body control...Has a knack for getting open...Extremely strong...Versatile player who also has experience lining up at fullback and wide receiver...Productive and led the ACC with 871 receiving yards as a junior...Got better each year and still has a lot of upside and potential.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the height you look at the position...Improving as a blocker and is adequate right now but can still get better in that area...Still a little raw and needs to round out the rough edges and master the nuances of the game...Is somewhat of a wide receiver trapped in a tight ends body and often times plays like it.

Notes:
Owns school strength records for a tight end in bench (460), power clean (355), vertical jump (40 inches), index (797), squat (685) and 40-yard dash time (4.41), all of which were recorded in the spring of 2005...Probably one of the best tight end prospects to come along in some time and his final grade will likely be close to that of guys like Tony Gonzalez and Kellen Winslow II when they were coming out.

David Thomas Height 6-3 1/8 Weight 252 40- 4.67

Strengths:
Has very good hands...Runs excellent routes...Will make the tough catch and adjust to poorly thrown balls...Pretty good natural athlete with fine quickness...Plays faster than he times and sported an impressive yards per catch average in college...Is a threat in the red zone and has a knack for catching touchdowns...Smart and knows how to get open...Has a lot of experience and good intangibles...Productive and was Vince Young's favorite target.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the size or bulk you look for...Lacks elite timed speed and won't stretch the field...Is not a great blocker...Needs to get much stronger...Has trouble beating the jam...Does not have a lot of upside...Skill set will not be a good fit for every team and he will need to be in the right system to succeed.

Notes:
Has the looks of an H-Back or pass catching specialist at the next level...In the right situation he could be a nice weapon in the short passing game but size and speed limitations will always hold him back and put boundaries around his role.

Speaks for itself Tony Gonzalez or Frank Wychek, thats why Davis is a top 10 pick and Thomas is 4-5 round pick.

Default whoever gets him...

Most likely will get a Todd Heap or Marus Pollard type TE. Doesn't block the greatest, with mlack of ideal size, but just makes plays. Whenever I see him, it's just a catch for a first down or touchdown.......Isn't that what the Texans need to stretch the field. Look what Heath Miller did for Pittsburgh......4th round selection...........Dave Thomas!

That is what I am saying.

You guys are convincing me though. Keep in mind the only reason I am going with Dave Thomas as my top TE in the draft is due to the fact we probably wont go TE until 3rd round.

Whose game does V Davis remind you of?

I would say potentially a shorter Antonio Gates because of his pure athleticism.

David Thomas is an excellent pass receiving TE w/ an incredible work ethic. For those reasons alone, he would be a great pick in the 3rd or 4th rounds. However, even as an avid UT fan, I would actually prefer Joe Klopefenstein in the 4th round as opposed to Thomas.

As far as an overall, balanced TE, Vernon Davis is the clear #1 TE IMO...Mercedes Lewis & Leonard Pope are the next best options.

My ranking of TEs:
Vernon Davis - should be a top 10 pick
Leonard Pope - should be 1st round, likely gone at or before the Bengals at #24, for sure gone at or before Panthers at #26.
Marcedes Lewis - could be 1st round or early 2nd. Will likely be third TE off the board and likely will not get past the Panthers or Bears picks in the late 1st. I don't know if I'd take him at #33 if he falls there though, I'm not sold on him being a complete enough TE and I think we have more pressing needs to fill.
Dominique Byrd - mid-2nd to early 3rd rounder. I would definitely not mind taking him at #65/66 if he lasts that long, I think he'd be a good value there.
Anthony Fasano - Pretty solid TE, he should last until the 3rd round, not sure I'd really want to take him at #65/66 but that depends on what we do in the first two rounds and who else is available at these picks.
Joel Klopfenstein - See Fasano's comments
T.J. Williams - very solidly built, pretty good athleticism, decent hands and blocking. I wouldn't take him on the 1st day and he likely would last to the 4th round. I wouldn't mind taking him at #97 depending on who else is available and what we do on the 1st day of the draft.
Tim Day - pretty solid TE, will fairly likely last until the 4th round and I'd take him there, but I wouldn't take him at #65/66.
David Thomas - decent TE, will be around in the 3rd round, very possibly the 4th. If we don't grab a TE on the 1st day I wouldn't mind getting him at #97 but I wouldn't take him at #65/66.

Agreed. We won't take a TE in the first round, so we can discount those guys.

I've liked Dave Thomas because he has a kinetic energy on the field that I think will be good for the Texans. I don't think blocking skills can be defined because of Texas' unique backfield.
