Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports the Cleveland Browns are expected to release LB Kenard Lang, the team's sacks leader over the last four years. Lang struggled with a conversion from 4-3 end to 3-4 linebacker in 2005. His contract that calls for $4.5 million in 2006 will be voided, and he can be a free agent.

If we could get him for the minium he could be good. He's older than Kyle Vanden Bosh, but he could ressurect for us like KVB did for them. He's definitly some one to look at maybe even as a strong side DE.

I have no idea, I was thinking he could come here as a DE, which is the position he used to play, the reason they are considering releasing him is because he is having problems adjusting from a DE in a 4-3 to an OLB in a 3-4.

He was just released yesterday, so it's probably too early to tell. I'm hoping here though.

last i heard he wanted to follow edwards to kansas city...pittsburgh was also an option he was interested in

The Cleveland Browns have terminated the contract of LB Kenard Lang. "We felt in talking with Kenard and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, that this was the best move to make for him as well as the Browns," said Browns senior vice president and general manager, Phil Savage.

Lang was a DE in the NFL before moving to LB. He'd be a weakside DE, though, along with Babin and possibly Peek. He's not the strongside DE the team needs.

I assume the strongside DE needs to be stronger, but requires less speed? I hadn't thought about there being a difference, but I'm sure there must be.

I think the strongside defense goes against the left side of the offense. In other words our strong DE goes against the left tackle who "guards" the QB's blind side as most QBs are right handed passers. Also, most running plays are to the center and left side of the Oline. Don't worry if I am wrong, I will definitely be corrected and probably flayed.

^ no, strongside of the defense lines up vs the RT of the offense

weakside lines up against the LT

and yes strongside de's are usually igger and stronger vs the run, weakside de's are usually the team's best pass rusher

Correct...the reason the strongside DE needs to be bigger/stronger is b/c the RT usually has a TE helping him out.
