Default Martz near deal to join Lions staff

LINK

Former St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz was interviewed Tuesday by Lions coach Rod Marinelli and there were indications that Martz was close to being hired as the team's new offensive coordinator.

An announcement could be made today. It is expected Martz would receive a one-year contract worth approximately $2 million.

Martz was the offensive coordinator for the 1999 Rams team that won Super Bowl XXXIV. He took over as head coach the next season, after Dick Vermeil retired. Martz had to step down five games into this season because of a heart ailment related to an infection. He was fired after the season with a year left on his contract.

Martz flew in Tuesday morning to meet Marinelli at the team's Allen Park headquarters. Martz met with team officials and was given a tour of the facility.

I think that would be an amazing pickup for a team that has all the weopons (offensively) in place.

Not showing him much confidence with just a 1 year deal, unless that is what he wants, so he could get a HC gig next year.

He still has health issues
It's kind of a trap contract

If he does well, then the Lions do well and retain some of his staff if he wants to leave.
If he doesn't do well (and I expect this in year one) He if tied down to rebuilding the offense WHICH WOULD FREAKING RULE!!!!

Havn't been this geeked about my team since....umm...week 4

Lions | Money wasn't the reason Martz wasn't brought on board?
Fri, 3 Feb 2006 10:06:00 -0800

Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli did not feel comfortable with Mike Martz as the team's potential offensive coordinator. While reports said the two broke off talks because of financial reasons, sources close to the situation note money was not the deal-breaker for the Lions. While Marinelli spoke highly of Martz earlier in the week, he also said he wanted more time to ponder the decision before they officially offered the job to Martz.

Lions | Not taking no for an answer when it comes to Martz
Fri, 3 Feb 2006 13:09:26 -0800

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the Detroit Lions, according to league sources, contacted former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz Friday, Feb. 3, to see if he would reconsider his decision not to take their offensive coordinator job. Could Martz change his mind? While it's unlikely, Martz has changed his mind in the past.

I think the offer is still on the table for Sherman, we're just waiting for him to decide yay or nay.
