Default Safety?

I wnt to know what you all think about picking up a premier safety with either the second or third round picks we have.

1. Huff - UT
2. Bing - USC
3. Simpson - USC - Gamecocks
4. Slay - TT

That's what i see as top notch. I look at great defensive backfields and they all have that premiere safety.

1. Polamalu - Pitt
2. Boulware - SEa
3. Lynch - Den
4. Harrison - N.E.

Huff and Simpson are sure fire first rounders in my eyes...Bing's lack of coverage skills may drop him to the second, but I'm not sure about that either...Slay will probably be available in the third, but I don't know if he has the speed and coverage skills to be a difference maker in the NFL...He seems like a harder hitting Glen Earl to me...If you want a third round safety, think Jason Allen from Tennesse...He played both CB and FS and isn't afraid to hit anyone...He was viewed as a first rounder before missing most of the season with an injury...He should be healed by the draft though...

nice, D, but would you use or do you think we need a safety who can lay down punishment?

It couldn't hurt, but as far as our list of needs go, I'd put SS further down than FS...I'm anxious to see how Brown and Earl develop...

We need a ball hawking FS before another SS. We are starting two SS's right now. Neither one is above league average.

Simpson could possibly slip to the #33 pick depending on his workouts, and the workouts of other safteys.

Im not positive but I thought the story on Earl was that he was the #2 S in the draft behind S. Taylor before he injured his knee. And the story on bad knee injuries is usually 1+ year for complete recovery, I think we should see what we have with him and CC Brown before we bump them down the depth chart... I think we have bigger problems personally..although if a gamebreaker fell I think uve gotta take the BPA

Very true, and it's still very early in the game...There are still tons of possibilities, just like at this time last year, Alex Smith was a second rounder, Aaron Rodgers was a lock to be the first overall pick, Demarcus Ware was a second day DE, and Matt Jones was looking like an UDFA QB (well up until the Senior Bowl, at least)...

The thing is, there are a glut of teams that need a FS who will be picking in the mid to late first, so even if Simpson runs a little slow, or isn't quite as good as advertised, I could still see him going in the first...The only FS I could se making a huge rise would be Allen, and he'd need to have a great combine and pro day for that to happen...The FS crop doesn't seem to be very deep this year...

its not bad either though and this draft looks so talent -laden that he may just fall to #33. i wouldnt mind getting a safety,te,or lineman with that pick- of course if we trade down we might get another pick that we could take him with

I'd stick with Earl and CC. I think @ 2nd round we should consider OT, CB (Buchannan gone) or just maybe depending on who is avail a wide receiver or another D lineman.

Ill stick with Earl and CC as well. We dont need things like WR's, S, CB's, FB', QB's, RB's in the 2nd. We need to build up the walls. Give me Davin Joseph or a left tackle if we take bush.

These are the only 2 senarios I want to see on draft day.

1. Bush
2. Colledge

or

1. Trade down. Ferguson
2. Joseph
2. End, or tackle for our new 4-3.

You left out Dallas, who arguably, are one solid piece away from the best talent in the defensive backfield in the NFL.

1. Roy Williams
2. Newman
3. Henry
4. Glenn in the slot
5 (insert need at FS here)

Remember, they shut down Seatle, Denver, Carolina, Philly (pre-TO, McNabb issues), San Diego, Kansas City.....

Jason Allen might workout to be a franchise FS in the NFL & would be my top propsect if he was still there when the Texans pick in the 3rd rd.

Can't forget Ed Reed either.

Iagree that we could use a stud safety. But, we could also use everything else. I think it is one of those positions that we can get by with low round cheap players, at least for now. That being said, if we ended up drafting 12 or so, I would be happy to draft Huff. Otherwise, make a best value pick and worry about it later. Worst case scenario is that we play Brown and Earl and see if they can cut it or not. If not, replace them next year.

yes, if he falls to the third we take him right away.

FS is a HUGE need for us. Glenn Earl is not a FS pre-injury nor post. Brown is a solid back up. We need a lot, but a real, ballhawking FS is a HUGE need for our team.

top FS, in order:
J. Williams
M. Huff
K. Simpson
J. Allen
Bing
G. Blue

WOW that turned out badly what happend to the pic

it should be pointed out that these picks are the top of each round so when we say 2nd or 3rd etc... they should be considered premium picks and there will be talent that slips the Texans way, therefore I would be against trading any of our picks away this year, just fyi

I don't see Bing or Blue as guys that will be able to play FS in the NFL...Neither look very good in coverage and both are big hitters...They both seem like prototypical SSs to me...I think it's interesting that you listed Jimmy Williams...Depending on how he runs, he may have to switch from CB to FS, which would cause him to take a bit of a fall...I doubt he falls to 33, but it would be nice...

We got a lot of hugh needs. lol. Long time till april. I think we need to ceede
that we're not getting two ones and two twos for the VY/RB sweeps and figure out a way to improve this OL. FS is way down in my prority book right now. The Hill kid looked absolutely awesome in work outs this week. Who says we can't take another corner who is big ?

I tought that one of my other LT's might slip through the cracks to the 32. I don't believe that will happen now..I'll settle for Jean-Giles @ 32 or the kid from USC. They ain't a left tackles..but it's a start. If we're going to have to block for gram cracker butt, better be some holes waiting on him.

I think that if we could trade down and get Huff, it would be huge for us or we could trade for a lower pick and a good vetern FS. If Baltimore would do it, I wouldnt mind taking their 13th pick this year and Ed Reed. Baltimore could use Lewis as trade bait and draft Bush to go along with Taylor. But that's just my opinion
