Default DPAR ratings: Carr ranked 41st.

Carr is ranked 41st..

Quote:
QUARTERBACKS 2005
Regular season totals, playoffs not included
Revised as of 1/3/2006

Quarterbacks are ranked according to DPAR, or Defense-adjusted Points Above Replacement. This number represents the total number of points scored due to plays where this QB passed or carried the ball, compared to a replacement-level QB in the same game situations. DPAR (and its cousin, PAR, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here.

The other statistic given is DVOA, or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. This number represents value, per play, over an average QB in the same game situations. The more positive the DVOA rating, the better the player's performance. DVOA (and its cousin, VOA, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here.

The simple version: DPAR means a quarterback with more total value. DVOA means a quarterback with more value per play.

Last season he was ranked 18th .... thats a pretty big drop off but looking back farther 27th in 03 .... 47th on 02 . The numbers dont look real good and neither do Carrs stats .... But im not sure that this ranking system is a reliable way to assess a particular player at a given position .....

Football being the ultimate TEAM sport the talent or lack there of will add to or subtract from any given players ranking ..... Carr isnt near as bad as these numbers would sugguest . (Nor does he belong near the top)

Trying to adjust baseball type stats into football just doesnt seem to be a solid concept to me . In Baseball the offensive side of the game is a one on one match-up with batter and pitcher ...Making these numbers more relivant to each individual player . In football each play is 11 men working together .... Those individual numbers mean much less .... each player on the field contributes 1/11th to each play .

To back this up .... Look at the relative value of D.Davis vs J.Wells in the same ranking system DD is 23rd and Wells 25th yet Davis avgeraged 4.2 per carry to Wells 3.6 .... compare that to M.Anderson (Denver) who had the exact same 4.2 avg as Davis yet is ranked #8 or Edgerrin James (Indy) with again the same 4.2 avg but is ranked #3 .... Then for good measure throw in Willie Parker (Pitt) who is ranked 16th but has a higher avg per carry than all of the above mentioned players with 4.7..... These numbers are skewed.

When comparing QB's Completion percentage , TD/INT ratio and Yards per attempt are still the best way to judge them .... and even these dont give all the info because other players are involved .... dropped balls and tipped passes that lead to int's can change things on paper that may not be the QB's fualt .

Passes includes sacks and aborted snaps. Both count against a quarterback's value.
Perhaps skewing the stats a bit?

from what i read on it. interceptions that a player tips or isn't the qb fault doesn't count against them so that helps the QB

but hard to do the sacks thing.. some of it is the QB's fault and some isn't.
Carr isn't good at reading defenses and runs himself into trouble.
other times the OL doesn't give him time. or possibly the WR makes the wrong read on blitzes and doesn't get open

Default Thanks for the post.

Interesting stuff.

What struck me is how very good QBs on down teams did. (ones that had down years and played with a lot of rookies).

Steve McNair was 9th for DPAR, Favre was 15th.

Even Kerry Collins, QB of Oakland and place where Carr might be psuedo rumored to go was 11th.

It is sick to see how many non-good QBs that were ranked above Carr.

Though it is hard to say if this says more about Carr or about the bizarro offensive scheme we ran this year and the injuries the offense had.

Tony Banks' DPAR for 2000 was 27, and for 2001 was 29.

Not making a point, just saying.

I wanna know how they decide what an average QB does behind a swiss cheese O-line. I mean who are they kidding assuming they know what an "average" QB would do in the same situation? We've all seen Carr and this team play and we don't need stats that don't take everything into consideration, or jumbled and overcomplicated ones that do for that matter. For or against Carr, you've seen the games and you can make up your own mind. Football is not about calculus.

Talking

i'm being serious though. I think that David Carr is a good guy and a good QB. I'm a fan and he'll good things given a fair chance. and i mean a real fair chance, say one where he isnt sacked every third play, or he has a real #2 to draw some coverage away from Dre'.

I find it amazing that DC hasn't asked for a trade or to be outright released.

He is definetly tuff, er maybe he just has rocks in his head.
