Scenario about Kubiak and Carr

I think the last day to give Carr the option in his contract is Feb. 2. Well, the Super Bowl is on February 5th. If the Broncos do make the Super Bowl, then the Texans by all accounts will have to decide on the Carr situation without complete input from Kubiak. What do you guys think about this, if the scenario plays out this way? If the Texans do give Carr the option then I think there is no chance they will draft Young.

I heard on the radio (790) that it was February 2nd. I've never heard anything definitive though.

As I understand it, the Texans will sign Carr on Feb 2 at the earliest due to accounting reasons.

If the date to pick up the option is before the SB and the Broncos make it
to the big game, whether out in the open or in clandestine manner, Kubiak is
gonna have to communicate his thougts about Carr to the Texans. The Carr decision is the key to the whole Draft, and how the Texans use their top pick could have a lot to do with the teams success over a long period of time.

All it takes is a phone call. He's interviewed for the position what 4 times, in the last 4 years...... he should know Carr well enough. He's got more than enough time, to watch film, and do his homework before Feb2. It won't be easy, but he's a professional, and I'm sure he knows how to manage his time. Some guys will do lunch, or eat dinner, he's going to look over Scouting reports. They'll be a behind the scene phonecall, he'll be in on the decision.

I must say the organization has put itself in quite a predicament. A season that was to be one that they at least broke .500, went down the drain in the first few games. Won the 1st pick of the draft and possibly the Heismann winner, only a few days later the Heismann winner was out shined by the runner up. Based on that happening the Heismann winner has almost been thrown under the bus in this city by most of those rooting for him to be a Texan. Coaching staff was fired, the guy that may get the job is currently doing very well w/ his current one which is keeping the Texans in limbo as to which direction to go as far as the pick and David Carr.

All I hope is that the decisions that are made payoff for this team in the end. We won't know if the right decisions were made until next season as it progresses.

Sorry, I think this is nonsense. They have to pick up Carr's option in order to control what happens to Carr. He will either (a) be the QB, (b) be the QB for a year while they see if Vince Young (or Leinart) can pick up the offense fast enough to come on in '07, or (c) be traded to some team that wants him.

Keep Carr for a year or two then Young will be ready to start. The Texans will get bucks for Carr in a trade at that time. Take the time to build a line that works.

I don't think that will be the case. That would be way too much money on two QB's, one of which won't even be playing. And if this does happen (God forbid) what if Carr becomes a Probowler under Kubiak? We trade Vince Young, which in that case, his signing bonus would be accelerated also and the Texans would take a major cap hit. There's no way we sign Carr to his option then draft Vince. If the Texans wanted to do that they would have to franchise him and pay him as much as the top paid QB for next season which I don't see happening.

I think there was a post a while ago where someone ran the tape on the way the timelines work out. What I remember was that Carr has until the 2nd or 3rd of Feb to void the remaining years on his deal. The front office has 2 weeks to exercise the extension options that are allowed under the deal.

I tried to point out a potential trade scenario that to my uneducated mind made sense, but no one commented on it (must have found out that I am secretly a leper). Anyway I am familiar with contracts in different businesses and it seems to me that the Texans could trade the Carr's contract to another team during this 2 week window thereby requiring the other team to actually exercise the option and have that all count against the new teams cap. In essence they would be trading a voided contract along with the option. I would imagine the Texans would have the remaining portion of the original bonus if any as the hit.

I have to admit I am a bit of a Carr homer and I would prefer to see what he can do under a new system. Maybe some of the more informed people could give a sense if this is possible or not. AT? AJ? KT? Vinny?

The trading period doesn't open until March 3rd. That will be after Carr's option is exercised.

The only way the Texans could trade Carr and not realize a cap hit (after the trade) is to franchise or transition tag him - and then trade him. In that scenario, the f-tag or t-tag amount will count on the Texans cap until they trade him, but when the trade is executed, the Texans would be immediately relieved of the entire tag amount from the cap. Then the new team takes that one year tag amount and spreads it out over a multi year deal.

If the Texans exercise either the 2 or 3 year option and then trade him, then they have to deal with the signing bonus acceleration, either the 5.5 or 8 million when the trade is made.

The last 3 years of Carr's deal were automatically voided by his meeting certain performance levels over the 1st 3 years of his contract. The only date remaining is one for the Texans to exercise either the 2 or 3 year buyback option.

I hear this every once in a while, and it always remindes me of when the Oilers drafted the 3rd place Heismann winner - Steve McNair 3rd overall in 1995. I thought he rode the bench while Chandler started for two years then got his start in year 3. However, I was incorrect in that thought he played 4 games his first year, 9 his second, then all 16 from the 3rd year on. wikipedia on McNair

If Bud and the Oilers can figure it out... Not so much on the Young bandwagon, but it seems it is possible depending on the contract.
