Default Saints hire Cowboys Sean Payton as head coach

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2295741

Hmm, things are starting to shape up here-

#1 - Vince Young - Texans
#2- Matt Leinart - Saints
#3- Reggie Bush- Titans

Sounds good to me!!

That is a good pick up for the Saints, and really smart of them to not let him leave once they got him in. Looks like Linehan is going to head to the Raiders. Both those teams will have good offenses. Nice post even though your top 3 picking situation is off, but hey your opinion is your opinion.

Nah, many people want to believe that Reggie will go 1 or 2 or the Texans will trade down, but I don't think so on neither. The Heisman is not a big deal to me when you think about the Heisman NFL busts vs the guys that actually do well.
Also, people don't say it but the bonehead throw by Reggie when he was on his way to a touchdown and the outshining of VY, did kinda throw Reggie out of the "#1 pick shoe in" category to top 3.

If each of the teams addresses their needs, then I am right on
Texans=David Carr
Saints=Aaron Brooks
Titans= no real good RB since Eddie G

If they address the hype, then I'm off.

Yeah, that hurt him. Looking like he wasn't even the best running back on his own team looks kinda bad too. I just don't understand how you draft a running back 1st overall who isn't even an every-down running back.

I feel sorry for anybody who has to coach the Saints next year. Bad owner, no home field, the team stinks and now a new coaching staff.

Well, at least everyone will get free chocolate during half time performances, er, ah, was that chocolate milk.

Payton welcomes unique challenges
New Saints coach eager to tackle job of recovery in area; Lions ready to hire Marinelli from Bucs

Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

NEW ORLEANS - The latest Bill Parcells protégé to get an NFL head coaching job is Sean Payton. The New Orleans Saints are hoping he can be as good a turnaround specialist as his mentor.

Payton, a Dallas Cowboys assistant the past three seasons, was introduced Wednesday as Saints new head coach, inheriting a team that won three times this season and played all its games on the road because of Hurricane Katrina.

Payton, 42, is taking on his first head coaching job. In Dallas, he worked with quarterbacks and held the title of assistant head coach. Before that, he was a New York Giants assistant, a stint that included that team's NFC championship in 2000.

Payton succeeds Jim Haslett, whose tenure lasted six years. The Saints went 3-13 in 2005, but were a .500 team during Haslett's first five seasons combined. The victories include the team's only playoff win.

Payton, the 14th Saints head coach, acknowledged the problems caused by Katrina — for the team and the New Orleans area.

"Obviously 2005 was a traumatic year for this area, it was a tough time for this team. I hope that in some small way the effort of this team in 2006 and beyond will represent this city and this region well," Payton said. "Hopefully I'm not viewed as a young, naive coach coming into a situation here. I'm excited about this opportunity. I know it's a challenge and we're going to roll our sleeves up."

Payton said being a part of the region's recovery from Katrina was more of a draw than a drawback, making the opportunity with the Saints unique.

"We can impact people's lives in a positive way as they go through this transition," Payton said. "I think this area, this community, this region is tough."

In other NFL coaching developments Wednesday:

•Rod Marinelli has agreed to a four-year contract to become Detroit Lions coach, a person close to the situation said.
Lions senior vice president of communications Bill Keenist said he could not confirm or deny the hiring of Marinelli, Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant head coach and defensive line coach.

President Matt Millen and chief operating officer Tom Lewand were unavailable for comment and did not respond to phone messages.

The Lions have called a news conference for this morning.

Marinelli never has been an NFL coordinator, let alone a head coach. But that's partly because the Buccaneers denied him permission to explore opportunities as a defensive coordinator on four occasions.

•The San Diego Chargers fired offensive line coach Carl Mauck and assistant secondary coach Albert Lewis.
Each had a year left on his contract. Mauck, 58, is a former Oilers offensive lineman.

"At times this can be a difficult business and we have to make tough decisions," coach Marty Schottenheimer said in a statement. "These are good football men with valuable experience in this league. I thanked them for their hard work and wished them both well."

•Former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman interviewed with the Buffalo Bills, bringing the team a step closer to hiring its new head coach.
•The New York Giants hired Peter Giunta as secondary coach a day after firing Ron Milus.

I know it was one game, but his inability to get to the corner, and his coaches lack of faith in him(on that crucial 4th & 1) are what knocked him out of the top 5 picks in my minds draft.....

I don't even consider him a running back... I won't draft a utility guy like a WestBrook with a #1 overall...

I can't believe people compare this guy to Marshall Faulk, or LT....

I actually like the Saints.... they're my #3 team.... I think they've done well in getting some talent on the team.. Dante, Mighty Joe Horn, Duece, and even Aaron Brooks. But I think they made him the man too quick. His first two/maybe three years, on what was a really bad team at the time.... You could see his will to win, his talent... he was very exciting to watch. He's as big as Dante, but for some reason(not as strong) can't shrug off those hits that don't even phase culpepper..... kinda odd really. If he ends up with a good QB coach, he'll be okay...... but because of some of the things he's said in the media, I doubt he'll get another fair shot at being a starter.

I heard on ESPN that the Rams have hired Scott Linehan, offensive coordinator for the Dolphins last year, as their head coach and the Lions have hired Marinelli (sp?), defensive line coach for the Buccaneers last year, as their head coach. Both are supposed to be officially announced in press conferences today.

Good hirer. I guess if you give Millen enough chances, he might get it right.
