Jaguars/WR Reggie Williams Marijuana Possession

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police said a wide receiver with the Jacksonville Jaguars who was stopped Monday night for failing to stop for a stop sign was cited for having marijuana in his car.

Reggie Williams, 22, the Jaguars' top draft pick in 2004, was stopped on St. Johns Bluff Road about 6:30 p.m. after he failed to stop at a light, according to police.

According to police documents, the officer smelled burnt marijuana coming from Williams, then asked for and received permission to search the car. The officer said he found two marijuana cigarettes under the driver's seat and a small bag of loose marijuana in the center console of the SUV.

Williams, whose full name is Reginald Williams Jr., was arrested on a charge of possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana, a misdemeanor. But rather than being taken to jail, Williams was issued a notice to appear in court.

Police told Channel 4's Jim Piggott that Williams received no preferential treatment, that it is customary to give those arrested on a misdemeanor charge a notice to appear rather than book them into jail.

Police said a field sobriety test was given to Williams and he was found not to be impaired before he was released to the custody of his brother, who drove him home.

Williams was also cited for running a red light, turning left from a center lane and unknowingly driving on a suspended or revoked driver's license.

Williams, the ninth overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft, caught 238 passes for 3,536 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns in three seasons for the University of Washington Huskies. He declared himself eligible for the draft as a junior.

According the Jaguars' Web site, William is the team's fifth-ranked receiver, with 27 receptions for 268 yards and one touchdown in 2004. Last year's statistics were not available.

A team spokesman said Tuesday morning they had no comment on Williams' arrest.

That's not a particulary confortable picture if TO decides to play. However, on the otherhand, maybe he will blow up the Jags from inside.

That's been the trend. If there was a team he hadn't blown up I'd be worried but since he kills them all no big deal. He'll sign, have a Pro Bowl year, and start complaining about Leftwich about twenty minutes after their last playoff game. I can hear him now.

"Hey man I just came to play and a lot of people were questioning my talent and my will to overcome the bad rap that the Eagles and that wimp McNabb hung on me but ya know when crunch time came I wasn't the one sitting out there looking like the Pillsbury Doughboy and gasping for breath."
