Default No matter who is head coach, we MUST get a great O-line coach

I think everyone knows my position of the VY-RB debate so I will put that aside for now. Assuming we will do the right thing and take VY, I would think all of us would agree that improving our O-line and TE situation is of primary importance. Now don't get me wrong. I definitely think that our personnel should be upgraded via the draft and free agency. Seth Wand should see the field so we can find out if we have a player or not.

That being said having great O-line talent is not the be-all, end-all when it comes to having a great line. A good O-line coach can turn average talent into a good line and good talent into a great line. Look at this year's playoff teams. While Seattle has a talent in Walter Jones, the rest of their line is not just a bunch of 1st rounders. I don't think Pittsburgh or New England have a first rounder in their lines.

The perfect example of this is with UT. Tim Nunez was Mack Brown's first O-line coach. He was terrible. UT had top flight O-line talent as witnessed by guys like Leonard Davis being taken highly in the draft. Nevertheless, Nunez's UT O-lines couldn't handle the blitz, were not cohesive, and were generally considered to be a liability rather than an asset despite the talent.

Luckily for us Orangebloods, Mack fired Nunez and hired McWhorter instead. McWhorter is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country. While UT has great talent, he has made the sum of the parts even better. UT's line is a definite strength and is obviously one of the reasons why VY, Jammaal Charles, etc. were able to do their thing.

Pendry was a worse O-line coach than he was as OC and that is saying something. We MUST have a change in this department.

Someone from the Denver area reported that Shanahan is being pretty generous with Kubiak and is apparently going to let him grab a few of the coaches on his way out.

I think Shanahan knows he doesn't need those guys any longer because he knows how to coach these guys so Kubiak could bring some fancy luggage with him.

I think any coach, no matter how good he is, would like to keep his assistants.

Battles are won and lost in the trenches. I could care less who they take with the no. 1 pick, as long as our o-line is the immediate concern after that pick. Failure to upgrade will mean another fruitless season ahead. Bush and Young would both look like the rookies they are if they run behind the 2005 Texans offense.

O-line help is needed. That still leaves the other "trench". There will be no quick fix for the whole team.

Edited to add: No quick fix barring an assumed large upgrade in coaching.

I have heard he is being allowed to take the OL coach and the WR coach.

Well hopefully the offensive line will finally become an offensive line. I'll wait and see what happens though

NE's #1 in the past draft was Logan Mankins .... #32 overalll and an O-lineman . Starts at RG.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2005/mankins_logan

Pittsburg's round one choice in 2002 Kendall Simmons (G) . Starts at LG
http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302224

Seattle had Two first rounders in 2000 , the second of which was Chris McIntosh (T) (No longer w/ Seattle)
In 2001 they had two picks again and took Steve Hutchinson(G) in round one . Starter at RG

Ill agree that Pendry blows as an O-line coach and is no better as an OC .

Here's a link to check past draft history from 1982-2004
