Question on Naming a Coach - Houston Texans Message Board & Forum

What is the REAL situation with naming a coach? I keep hearing that we have to wait until the Broncos are eliminated or they win the SB, but Casserly kept saying that did NOT want to wait more than another week (2 weeks at the most) to name a coach. He wants them to be able to work on getting his assistants lined up. How would this work with Kubiak or any other coach whose team is still in the playoffs?

They can name whomever they want whenever they get ready to name him. Crennel was named the Browns HC while in the playoffs...Weiss accepted the ND job while working as well.

A team cannot officially name a currently active NFL coach as their coach until that coach is inactive.

I am sure there will be some amending rule that will tie our team's hands behind our back the second another hyped up team wants the guy we want.

I don't think the Browns named Crennel the HC while the Pats were still in the playoffs last year. I think everyone knew that he was the front runner to get the job and everyone assumed he would take it. I don't think they offered him the job until after the Super Bowl run though.

Wow, that really puts successful coordinators on playoff teams at disadvantage. Other coaches out of the playoffs can already start assembling their coaching staffs! Wow, I hope Denver loses this week! Sorry Denver fans!

No way. I want our future HC to go out winning. Bring in the new ring to show our ragtag bunch of losers what is possible!

Kubiak has already unofficially been hired. The Texans cannot officially hire him until the Broncos are eliminated. However, I would suspect sometime towards the end of this week or this weekend that the Texans will release to the media that Kubiak is the choice. Hell even John McClain could figure out - he is headed to Denver for the week to cover Kubiak and Broncos assistants likely to come with him.

Casserly is essentially saying that the interview process will be concluded for sure within 2 weeks even if the Broncos are not elminated. He and Mr. McNair have got to be hoping the Broncos lose sooner rather than later.
