Default Sources: Texans to fire Capers

I know this is pretty much a given but thought I would post it.

Quote:
Houston Texans coach Dom Capers will be fired on Monday, league and team sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Even though team consultant Dan Reeves wouldn't mind becoming the Texans' next coach, owner Bob McNair will look harder at offensive coordinators like Denver's Gary Kubiak and San Diego's Cam Cameron with Iowa's Kirk Ferentz on everybody's radar, Mortensen reported.

McNair made it clear when hiring Reeves that he was not interviewing to be coach of the Texans, nor was he brought in to critique Capers or general manager Charley Casserly.

"He's here as a resource to assist me as we go forward and to assist the other people in our organization to help us be a better team," McNair said.

McNair said he hired Reeves to get an outside opinion of his organization and that he would spend time talking with coaches, watching practice and reviewing game film.

Upon joining the Texans, Reeves wouldn't rule out the possibility of returning to coaching ("Never is a bad word to say") but said he wasn't actively looking for a sideline job.

Capers is the only coach the expansion Texans have had during their four-year existence, and the club has a 17-44 record under his stewardship.

Until this year, Houston (1-12) had been a model of steady improvement, winning seven games last season after winning five in 2003 and four in its first season.
Well at least we will have an active off-season. I wish Casserly would have been part of the news.

From another thread:

I'm happy to see Capers going (because I don't think he had the respect of the players) but what about the GM? Last year EVERYBODY knew what Houston needed position wise (OL, etc) but it seemed like nothing was done to improve the situation. I don't want to see a situation like in Detroit.

It would almost seem unfair (I know... life's not fair) if Casserly survives and Capers is given the boot. Casserly may have gotten some players Capers wanted - but Casserly was IDLE (except for the Pace dating game) when it came to securing the O-line. Then there are the much debated draft choices, trades, etc. So, I hope Casserly is shown the door as well.

I totally agree. Casserly deserves as much, if not more, of the blame concerning the personnel problems found in this franchise. If McNair doesn't boot Casserly in the next week or two, I would imagine he is staying put.

Even though it is hard to do, but here goes. In casserly's defense, GMs are usually given two head coaches before they're shown the door and one thing I keep hearing is how lousy our coaching is. It doesn't matter if you draft the best players in the draft, if you can't coach them you can't win. Has Casserley made questionable decisions, yeah. I don't know what should happen, I just wanted to offer another point of view.

I still say he provided the coaching staff their wish list and they were very often wrong in their assessments. Even AJ has not been a good pick, because we don't have the coaching to teach and utilize him properly. I would say he's a good to excellent receiver, but not a gifted receiver. He is not a TO skill level wise nor a Randy Moss skill level wise. He does not have the great hands and is not an excellent route runner. The later is a function of coaching. I'm not saying we don't want him. I'm just saying every one's expectations for him are too high.

One more reason Casserly should stay is that I don't believe he could have fired Capers if he wanted to. It has been stated often that McNair has tried to figure out every way NOT to get rid of DOM this year. It is said he hoped he could have retained Capers if he could have won 4 or 5 games at the end despite what happened. No, I think Casserly was caught in the middle and simply did the best job he could given the situation at hand. We have a good reputation with dealing with players and that's one of Casserly's jobs. Get a new competent coaching staff and lets see what happens. Hey, who knows may be BJ will become a dominent TE for us after all these years of waiting. Wouldn't that be a hoot.......

What worries me is that NONE of you couch coaches EVER mention Fangio!! Why do you think Casserly made such a stupid deal to get PBuch!! He was pressured big time by Fangio!!

I say just clean house!! BUT PLEASE don't leave Fangio around to pick up the pieces of an already destitute defense. JMO!!

NO joke.. I have always wondered why Palmer got run out of town and Fangio came to the Texans with Walker/Payne/Sharper/Glenn/Coleman as people to work with and Palmer got the youngsters to start and underacheiving Veterans (dare I mention Jermaine Lewis that was a bust here and Boselli never got over the injury).. But Palmer became the scapegoat.. I just never understood why Fangio never was mentioned here

Not so - Casserly drafted two O tackles, Chester Pitts and Seth Wand and those resources have been badly developed and in general just badly managed. A better coach may have molded an OL which now would have a 4 year starter Pitts at LT and a two year starter Wand at RT.

after I typed it.. a lightbulb went off ..If Capers is guilty of one thing ,its loyalty to his circle of coaches (fangio, pendry) .. What has Fangio done? produced a pass rush? stop people on 3rd and long? What has Pendry really done to "earn" OC duties.. be the OL coach that ESPN highlighted before the 2003 draft of Carr just taking snap from McKinney?

Palmer was not in the "good ole boy" system

*edit**
Well now that I read the chronicle . it answers my question
Quote:
Capers, who has been a picture of calm during this turbulent season, was asked recently if he has been too loyal to his assistant coaches, particularly defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and offensive coordinator Joe Pendry, both of whom worked with him at Carolina.

"I've been around this business a long time, and I view loyalty as a strength rather than a weakness," Capers said. "I think in this day and age, if you knee-jerk react the minute you face a little adversity, you just change.

"I think when you change for change's sake, you can spin your wheels. I think certain organizations in the league will change every three years.

"I always viewed loyalty as a strength. I think that you have to be objective in your evaluations."

I say Casserly is ok and may be better than most think, but like the players we won't know until we get rid of all of the coaches and start fresh. Marciano might be the only exception. I will add one more to the list and that is our strengthening coaches who came from the Redskins. I've always wondered whether we are over dueing some of the exercizes to the point of tearing down rather than building up the body. There is a delicate balance there and I have felt some of the injuries we have seen might be attributed to the weight program and how its been implimented.

Mcnair took the reigns from CC when he brought in Reeves . If I was CC I might resign and look elsewhere .

I would give Dom a D- and CC a D gradewise . Dom and Fangio try to run a scheme the Yale team would have trouble with . The guys can't play cause their trying to cypher their keys .

If CC would had just made the obvious picks on draft day and not traded our high picks ... where would we be . Oh yea , no RBs who've only played 8 games for a 2nd rounder .

They are both the weakest link ... goodbye .

I for one am glad Dom will be gone. He's a nice guy, but this isn't a class favorite contest, we have to start winning football games(after today). I do fault Cass for not fixing the OL problem, but he has made some good choices. DD in the 4th, Carr over Harrington, AJ over Charles Rogers, D. Rob...etc. I wouldn't be apposed to giving Cass another year, but Dom has to go tomorrow.

AJ was picked after Rogers was gone . I still hate the Babin trade and the PBuch thing .

2nd rounders - Gaffney , Pitts , Joppru , traded , traded .

3rd rounders - Weary , Hill , Peek , Wand , Ragone , traded , Morency .

This is what's wrong with the Texans .
